Work Text:
Katsuki’s starting to genuinely think their class is cursed. It was meant to be a shopping trip, yet here they are in the middle of fucking Shibuya chasing down a group of villains.
And of course he’s paired with Icyhot, because why the hell not, world. Todoroki’s beside him as they soar through the air, riding a platform of ice that travels through the air and propels him forward. Katsuki decidedly does not think about Todoroki’s hair whipping in the wind and his legs spread to keep his balance.
“There, that building.” Todoroki’s voice snaps him back to reality, and they dive towards an abandoned warehouse or something. He’s beyond understanding what these third-rate villains have going on in those heads of theirs.
Katsuki blasts open the door, revealing the villains frantically rigging wires on the walls and floor. “Hands up, dipshits.” Ice crackles around them, binding the criminals’ feet to the ground.
“Oh, I wouldn’t do that if I were you.” The leader’s breath is ragged, probably from exertion, but he seems strangely confident.
“Do enlighten me.” Todoroki’s eyes narrow.
That’s when the world collapses around them with a sound comparable to his own Howitzer Impact. The last thing Katsuki hears is a cut-off gasp of pain, and his mind dimly registers that it’s from Shouto before their vision fades to black.
Katsuki wakes up with a splitting headache. He sits up and looks around. The warehouse they were in - are technically still in - has completely collapsed. The crooks are nowhere to be found, though he’s guessing they’re still inside somewhere.
A quick scan of his own body reveals a crap-ton of cuts on his arms and legs. Amazing. But at least he’s relatively unhurt. Strangely enough, the area where his head was is surrounded by water, and his hair is pretty drenched. But he doesn’t really dwell on that when his eyes catch on a dark crimson pooling nearby. As his vision races up to its source, it reveals red and white hair matted sticky with blood. Todoroki.
Katsuki scrambles up and towards him, uncaring of the blood soaking into his clothes. He scans the boy, and his heart plummets when he catches sight of a long bit of rusty rebar plunged into Todoroki’s upper stomach. Further examination reveals that it’s not just stuck in him, it’s also stuck in the floor. If it’s pulled out, Todoroki will bleed out in minutes. Todoroki himself is, other than being obviously impaled, relatively okay on the outside except for a minor cut on his head. His pulse is worryingly slow, and he’s breathing harshly.
Katsuki gently shakes Todoroki, trying not to jostle the rebar. “Icyhot. Wake up.”
Todoroki’s eyes flutter and his nose scrunches, and Katsuki decidedly does not think cute , thank you very much. He shakes him a little harder. “Hey. Eyes open.”
Todoroki’s eyes blink open and focus on him. “Baku…gou?”
“Shut up. I think your lung is punctured. Focus on breathing for a sec.”
Apparently, the idiot doesn’t even realise he’s being skewered. He finally looks down and takes in the rebar in his stomach. Katsuki sees the exact moment it registers in his brain, because he starts to move before stopping immediately with a harsh gasp of pain.
“Hey, hey. No moving. Don’t wanna make the wound worse.” Katsuki stops him with an unnaturally gentle hand, but he should be forgiven considering he’s trying to comfort
his crush
his classmate.
Todoroki stares up at him with big scared eyes. Katsuki looks around and takes in the structure of the tiny little area they’re in. If he lets off even a tiny bit of spark, the whole area will probably bury them alive.
The idiot completely disregards Katsuki’s instructions and speaks. “I can…support the structure…you blast out and find help.”
Katsuki is unable to comprehend how stupid this guy is. “You’re not using your ice while skewered into the ground.”
Because of course he does, he lifts a hand and forms a crystal of ice on it. “Yes I can.”
“I never said you couldn’t, I said- forget it. We’ll have to wait here until someone comes.”
They lie/sit there for a few minutes before Todoroki randomly speaks up. “Can I get up?”
“I’m starting to think you want to get yourself killed.”
“That’s not a no.” This absolute bastard idiot begins to lift himself up.
Before he’s really thinking, he’s pinning Todoroki to the ground, wrists above his head so he doesn’t get any funny ideas. “That is a no.”
Todoroki exhales, and only then does Katsuki realise how close their faces are.
“At least take me to dinner first.” This moron thinks he’s the funniest motherfucker on the face of the planet. Katsuki wants to smack him and kiss him at the same time.
Katsuki lets him go when he’s certain Todoroki won’t do any more dumb shit like unsticking himself from the ground. Just then, they hear someone shouting from above them.
Katsuki scrambles to his feet and shouts back. “Hurry up! Icy- Elemental needs immediate medical attention!”
Finally, the sun shines down on their faces for the first time in hours. Todoroki is lifted out and immediately placed on a gurney, where the paramedics crowd him and start all sorts of procedures Katsuki doesn’t have the energy to name.
All Katsuki can think about is how pretty Todoroki’s eyes are.
Days later, when Todoroki has been released from the hospital but put on very strict bed rest, he shows up at Katsuki’s door.
Because apparently “bed rest” isn’t a thing that his brain will accept. Katsuki has half a mind to shut the door in his face.
Instead, because he’s weak, he lets Todoroki in.
“You didn’t visit me in the hospital.” Todoroki’s pouting. Katsuki wants to kiss the pout off his face. But at the same time it’s adorable, so now he doesn’t know what he wants to do.
“Yeah.”
“Why?”
Because I’m madly in love with you and if I am left in a position where I do something I regret and push you away, I won’t be able to live with it.
“I was busy.”
“Oh.”
“…”
“You owe me dinner.”
Katsuki’s so incredibly thrown for a loop by that random statement it takes him a second to remember why precisely he owes this beautiful idiot a dinner.
“…Sit your ass down and don’t jostle your fucking bandages.”
Todoroki smiles and sits down on the couch.
Minutes later, they’re eating rice and tomato eggs out of plates while curled up on the couch, after Katsuki warms Todoroki approximately eight times that if he drops even a grain of rice on the couch he owes him a new couch.
“Why do you deal with me, Todoroki?”
Todoroki looks up, cheeks stuffed with rice and eggs. He looks like a chipmunk. It’s adorable.
“Huh?”
“Why do you want me to even see you?”
“Well, because we’re friends. And I enjoy your company.”
“…You’re lying. Stop pretending you want to be my friend.” It’s unimaginable. Todoroki Shouto, resident heartthrob of the school, with girls flocking after him left and right, enjoying the company of an angry, temper-controlled person like him?
“Who said I was pretending?”
“Why are you my friend?” Katsuki’s voice is weak. It’s breaking, showing sides of him he doesn’t want to show.
“You’re kind.”
And Katsuki’s voice is stolen from him.
He’s never been kind. He was always the mean kid, the bully, the anger-issues mess. He’s the one who steals people’s food, who takes people’s things, who people live in fear of.
But here, now, when Todoroki says it, he can almost believe it’s true.
“You made me food. You took care of me back in the warehouse. Why wouldn’t I want to be your friend?”
Katsuki’s always been controlled by his emotions. He’s been working on it, but even he admits his anger usually takes the reins.
This time, however, it’s a different emotion.
Katsuki leans forward and grabs Todoroki’s collar. “You are infuriating, I hope you know.”
Then, he leans in and kisses Shouto.
Their class might be cursed, but if nothing else, they managed to produce an angel. A white-and-red-haired, idiotic, selfless moron, but an angel regardless. And that angel chose Katsuki.
Hell yeah.
