minute long hug

Summary:

reader is sad for vague reasons and just wants a hug.

Work Text:

the floor creaked, dragging jason’s attention away from the files he was sorting through. you were in the doorway, outside of the warm light of the lamp- making it difficult to tell anything about your body language.

he had a feeling it was on purpose, and the thought made his heart sink a little.

“hey, angel, you okay?” he asked cautiously. “you should be asleep, it’s late.”

“i know that, thank you.”

“oof. so that’s a no, huh?”

you sighed, and he could just barely see you shift before answering. “can i have a hug? i won’t stay long, i know you’re working, i just-”

he was already dropping the papers onto the coffee table and pushing himself off the ground. “c'mere.”

you met him halfway through the room, wrapping your arms around his torso and burying your face in his shoulder before he could take a good look at you.

he didn’t have to see you to realize how tense you were, though, so he folded his arms around your back and rubbed his thumb in gentle circles between your shoulder blades, carefully rocking you side to side.

“you wanna talk about it?” he replayed the day in his mind, flicking back through the few conversations you had had between your responsibilities and his. was this something he’d done?

something he hadn’t done?

“no, just… wanna be held.”

your voice was so small it almost hurt to hear, and jason couldn’t help but squeeze you a little closer. “okay.”

he let a few moments pass quietly.

“do i need to beat someone up?”

a huff of laughter hit his collarbone. a small victory, but one he would gladly accept. “this isn’t really a punching kind of problem.”

he hummed softly. “is it a comfort food kind of problem?”

“yeah, maybe.” you pulled away from him, crossing your arms over your chest. “i’ll let you get back to it, sorry.”

“what? no, baby, do you really think i’m gonna just- no, no, i’m making you something to eat.”

you finally looked up at him, brows furrowed over red eyes. “your work’s important, jay.”

“and you’re not?”

you sighed again. “you know what i mean.”

“what i know is that i’d be a shitty boyfriend if i ignored you right now.”

“you would not-”

“so if i came to you crying at two in the morning, you’d be totally fine with letting me go about my business after a minute-long hug?”

“…that’s different.”

“then you can explain how it’s different while i make pancakes.” he tucked his work back into its folder and flipped it shut with a firm thwump.
