Lan watched the woman pull Moiraine into a firm embrace. She had to be coaxed to take the gold.
Surprise radiated through her bond. Joy. Acceptance.
“There are two tests each person has to face,” she told him later.
He looked up from his tea.
“What you do when you have nothing. And when you have much.”
“You have always been wealthy”, he remarked, adding a log to the flames.
She smiled and wrapped her arm around his shoulders.
Suddenly, the night was no longer foreboding.
“It was not about the money.” He wrapped an arm around her waist.
“Exactly.”
