Work Text:

Just a little more , your thoughts becoming desperate as the Lord in front of you was nearing the end of its frenzy.

Dodging and running around in endless circles to avoid getting hit with the balls of electricity (you didn’t know what to name them) was starting to get tiring. Ending up in your movements turning sluggish and less alert as more and more of those electric orbs continue to explode frighteningly close to you, however just far enough to not get hurt from them. You’ve been battling the frenzied lords and ladies one after another without any breaks for a few days now and you hadn’t realized just how much it had taken a toll on you until now.

The realization came just as you dodged another one of those electric orbs. As in a moment of distraction, you only heard a slight spark before an explosion behind you was heard as electric sparks flew and sent you flying.

Just outside the area where you were quelling the frenzied electrode, Melli and Adaman watched as you landed face first down onto the ground.

“Hey! Are you alright?” you hear Adaman shout in the distance. He’s seen you fall before but you always had gotten right back up afterwards. And when you didn’t respond, he began to worry.

“What? Did that galaxy grunt get hit again? I told her we shouldn’t have even dared to quell Lord Electrode seeing as it’s a blessing from the Almighty Sinnoh, but she didn’t listen,” Melli quipped from behind him. Their voices started to sound even farther away. Like they were talking to you across a valley.

“We need to get her out of there. She hasn’t moved a muscle and Lord Electrode is already getting ready to explode again.” Adaman worriedly said to Melli. Melli scoffed, “What do you want me to do? Get in there myself?”

The last thing you heard before you lost consciousness was Adaman shouting in what you can guess as panic and the cracks of electricity as the Lord was preparing to burst out its energy in one big wave. Then, everything went black.

With your body feeling like mush, you open your eyes to see Adaman sitting in a chair beside the bed you were lying on. You look around your surroundings and see a collection of medical materials and other beds. Your eyes linger around the room for a moment more before idling on Adaman's. He was staring at the wall, seemingly in deep thought until he suddenly caught your eye and let out an audible sigh of relief. “Oh good you’re finally awake,” he said, sounding relieved. “What happened?” You asked as you sat up, pausing for a second after stretching a bad muscle.

“You got hit by Lord Electrode one too many times and fell face first onto the ground after getting sent flying by an explosion. After a while you still hadn't moved so I got worried and took you out of the area. Don't worry, I finished quelling the Lord afterwards. Which thankfully didn’t take too long, seeing as you already threw so many balms at it that it only took 3 or 4 to finish the job,” Adaman explained, his lips quirk up a bit in pride as he said the last part.

He continued, “Melli got mad at me for being the one to take away Almighty Sinnoh’s blessing on Lord Electrode, as he called it, but I told him to just say that you were the one that did it, if asked. It took a lot of convincing but he gave in and finally agreed. After that I took you here since you still weren’t waking up,” He said, a sort of worried look adorning his face at the end.

He pauses for a while, and before you could start apologizing for making him worry, he opens his mouth again.

“Good thing you’re alright now though, if you weren’t then the responsibility would've been on me since I was the one who accompanied you to quell Lord Electrode,” He smiled, lightheartedly laughing, you join him.

“I guess so haha. Did you tell anyone that I passed out or-?” You asked. “I told Cyllene after I took you to the infirmary, I’m not sure if she passed it on to Commander Kamado though. But what I do know is that she said that you should take a few days off for a bit, to rest up.”

You hum in agreement, “Mm alright, hopefully no lords get frenzied again while I’m gone, who knows what you guys would do,” you laugh and Adaman laughs with you, “Definitely,” He agrees.

After the laughing had subsided, Adaman stood up from the chair and began preparing to leave.

“Well, I guess I should be going, I have a lot to do back at the Diamond clan. Take all the time you need to recover okay? As much as I go on about hating wasting time, taking a break definitely isn’t. So take as long as you need, we’ll take care of any frenzied lords while you’re gone so no need to worry, okay?” you can see Adaman's grin as he starts to walk away.

You can't help but smile back and wave him farewell. But as he approached the exit, something suddenly comes over you as you suddenly blurt out, “Hey Adaman?” He hums in response as he stops his walk to the exit. “Do you think the people here genuinely like me or do they just respect me because I quelled the frenzied lords?”

He froze. Then he turned his body back to look at you, “What do you mean?” He asked, walking back to the chair.

“It’s just that, even though I’ve been doing whatever I can to help the people here in Hisui and Jubilife village, doing requests, filling up the Pokédex and quelling the lords, there’s still a lot of people that don’t like me. Openly even. So Ive come to question myself, What would have happened if I didn’t manage to quell Lord Kleavor, would people still be as nice to me as they are now? And what even is my reason for being here? To quell the frenzied lords? If its just that then, am I just wasting my time trying to be friendly with everyone since it’s so obvious a lot of them are still suspicious of me. No matter what I do..” You look down at the blanket covering you.

Adaman just stares at you, seemingly not knowing what to say.

You continue, “Why am I always the one being sent to quell the lords, is it because if something happens to me, no one will be worried since I’m not part of the Diamond clan or Pearl clan? That if something happens to me, or if I do something wrong, no one will care? That no fight will ensue? I guess that is what Commander Komado prioritizes after all.” You chuckle, falling silent. I wonder what he thinks now. God, maybe I shouldn’t have told him what was in my head, now I’ve brought Adaman into my problems. Stupid stupid STUPID! Why did I speak up, I should have never opened my mouth, I should have never THOUGHT of these things in the first pla-

“Well” you get brought back from your spiraling thoughts when Adaman finally speaks.

“The people here in Jubilife village aren’t known to like anything that comes from outside these gates. Anything unknown is scary, like Pokémon for example. I mean that’s why you Survey corps people do all that you can to research them right? So the people can learn more about them, and maybe their fear of them will be alleviated,” He said as he took your hands off of the side of your head, which you didn’t even realize were there, and put them on your lap.

“I think it’s the same thing for you. You came out of nowhere, fell from the sky, and looked nothing like everyone else. You were new and unfamiliar to them, thus they were suspicious of you and didn’t like you right away. So when you quelled Lord Kleavor, they learned that you were strong and respected you for it. They learned something about you which alleviated some of their suspicions of you. And when you do requests for them and help them learn about Pokémon by filling up the Pokédex, they find out about your kindness, generosity, and even more so over time they start growing more lenient towards you. And while I may not know what your purpose is being here, I’m sure you will find it someday. And the fact that you’re helping people on the side is just amazing. More people will know that soon enough,” he smiles, squeezing your hand a bit as he does.

He continues, “And as for what you said about why you were the one being sent to quell the lords, I think that while you are right. You’re on the neutral side, neither Diamond nor Pearl clan and that’s why you’re the one being sent to quell them. You're also wrong. There ARE people that care about you, you know. Like Rei and Professor Laventon, Irida, me? If I could help in quelling the lords’ frenzies aside from making the balms, I would. But the tension between the two clans wouldn’t have let me, and you’re strong, so we rely on you. But I guess we’ve been too reliant on you. So, sorry for that,” he nervously chuckles.

His thumbs run circles around the back of your hand, “We all believe in you because you’re strong enough to quell the lord’s frenzies, and just because you’re genuinely a good person. A lot of people care about you, they just don’t say it. So I will. Know that I care about you and I think you’re absolutely admirable on different fronts, your relationship Pokémon, your kindness, your strength, your skill with dodging attacks with little fail, and so much more. You’re amazing and that’s why you should rest. And as much as you want to complete your missions, everyone still needs to take a breather once in a while, so you should too, okay? I’ll be worried if you get hurt again,” He looks into your eyes and smiles at you, showing his sincerity.

After he said all that, you just sat there, staring at him, taking in all of the words that he said. Then suddenly, you feel something wet on your face. You put your hands up to your face and feel tears. When did those start pouring out? You look at Adaman and he looks surprised and worried. Then because no words could explain what you wanted to say at that moment, you suddenly leapt up to give him a hug, tears falling down your face.

Adaman is caught surprised, hands not knowing what to do but hugging back and laying them on your back after a while. You two hug for a bit, no one saying anything as Adaman rubbed circles on your back. It felt nice having someone to talk to, he felt like a brother to you, just wanting to help. Then after a few minutes of hugging, your tears started to dry and you say, though muffled as your face was shoved into his chest, “Thank you.” Thank you for knowing just what to say to help. Thank you for understanding me. Thank you for caring about me. Of course you didn’t say all of that, but he knew, he understood what you meant through the muffled “Thank you” so he simply nods and says back, “You’re welcome.”
