"You know I love you, right?"
Scara choked on his food. "What?" The man in question who had just confessed was sitting idly to his left, twirling his... knife? Whatever it was that he kept in his sheath. He wasn't even looking at him. It made Scara a little annoyed, frankly. "Heizou, what?"
Heizou didn't reply, and instead kept looking to the left, turned away from Scara.
They were eating dinner, sitting together on a ledge in Sumeru that overlooked the ocean. The sun had begun to sink slowly under the horizon, casting the world in an orange-red hue. Scara put down his food, a half-eaten pita pocket that a young forest ranger, Collei, had given him (despite how he had told her he didn't need to eat), and shifted closer to Heizou.
He reached a hand out to grasp his chin, then pulled it towards him, forcing Heizou to face him. His face was a deep red, flushed, and probably a little sweaty. His eyebrows were contorted, and his mouth was set in a mix of surprise and embarrassment.
"Your face is red." Scara informed him.
"It's the sunset," Heizou replied. Scara gave him a look. "It is. I swear."
"Heizou."
"Yeah?"
"I love you too."
He let go of Heizou's chin, picked up his pita pocket, and resumed eating. He could already visualize the stupid grin Heizou was undoubtedly wearing right then.
Then a quiet, almost inaudible: "Okay."
