When Cas came to, the first thing he noticed was the headache. One of the many things he was not accustomed to since becoming human was these stupid little physical pains. Cas had felt pain before, he had felt so much pain it felt like he could never recover, but this? A dull ache that he couldn’t seem to get rid of. A constant reminder of his goddamn humanity.
Cas finally forced his eyes open after a few seconds and took a moment to realize he was not in his bed. In fact, he wasn’t even in his room. He was in Sam and Dean’s motel room, laying on the bed he assumed was Dean’s based on the jacket and journal laying on the end of the small bed. The room was empty but Cas assumed that the guys went out for breakfast. Or lunch. It could really be any time of day.
What happened? Cas thought back to the night before. The three guys were chasing a demon, Cas knew that. The demon had information they needed so they couldn’t just excorsize it. That was right. And last night they caught it, only to be ambushed by what looked like hundreds of demons, although it was probably closer to twenty. Still a lot.
They overwhelmed the group, making it impossible to get their hands on the demon. And then something hit Cas on the back of the head. Something very strong and solid. Cas couldn’t tell, he just knew that after he was hit, he felt his body hit the ground and his mind get fuzzy. He heard someone shouting his name and hands grabbing his body. And then the world went dark.
Yes, that’s right. He was attacked and knocked out. Cas was a bit mad to say the least. He let demons overwhelm him for fucks sake! God Dean must think so low of him.
Cas heard the door open and turned to see Dean walking in with a plastic bag in hand. Sam wasn’t with him although Cas assumed he must be nearby. Dean looked up and saw Cas sitting up, and something in his face changed. Something Cas couldn’t describe. His face remained the same but his green eyes softened the second they met Cas’ blue ones.
“Hello Dean.”
“Cas,” Dean said, dropping the bag and coming over to the bed. He seemed to hesitate for a second, his hands stopping awkwardly, before deciding to drop his hands at his side. “Are you okay? Pretty rough hit you took back there.”
“Yes. I- I apologize Dean. I should not have let that happen,” Cas said.
“No! No it’s okay Cas, we were all struggling back there. Sam took a pretty nasty cut to the face,” Dean stopped for a moment before sitting on the bed. “Is your head okay?”
“It hurts. I believe there is a mark there as well,” Cas said, touching his hand to the back of his head where a fairly sizable bump sat. Dean watched him for a moment before slowly moving his hand up to his head and touching it slightly before pulling away.
“Here, I grabbed you some advil, should help with the headache. But you’re good other than that?” Dean asked, moving quickly to the bag and pulling out a small pill bottle.
Cas felt his heart skip a beat and his cheeks felt warm. Dean. It was always Dean that did this to him. Little touches, small gestures of affection, it all made Cas feel something inside him. He can’t understand why this happens to him, nobody else made him feel like this. Did Dean also feel this?
Dean handed Cas two pills and a glass of water. Cas took them gratefully and took the pills quickly,”Thank you Dean,” Cas said.
“Yeah ‘course man. Gotta make sure you’re okay,” Dean said. There it was again. The tug at his heart, the warmth on his face.
Cas realized he was still sitting on Deans bed with his blankets on him and stood up. Him and Dean were now face to face, both of them seemingly having an internal debate over what they should say, if they should say anything. Should Cas just leave and return to his room? He probably should, he was definitely encroaching on Dean’s space.
“So, now that you’re up, you should probably go back to your room. You know, get more rest in your own bed,” Dean said, although he seemed to be trying to convince himself over Cas.
“Yes. I’ll go,” Cas said, his hands moving uncertainly at his side. He moved toward the door but stopped. “Dean.”
Dean looked toward him, his eyes asking Cas millions of unanswered questions, his tongue darting out to lick his lips. Dean took a step towards him, pausing and opening his mouth, then clamping it shut.
“Dean. Ask me to stay. Please,” Cas said, regretting the words the second they left his mouth. Why would he say that? Dean would reject him, he knew it. Dean was a ladies man, he didn’t feel this way about guys like Cas.
“Cas,” Dean breathed out, taking the last steps toward Cas and placing a hand on Cas’ arm. After a moment, he lifted the other hand up to his cheek, his thumb lightly caressing his cheek. “Can I?”
Cas couldn’t speak, he simply nodded. His heart was beating a million miles a minute and his cheeks felt red hot. Dean leaned down and kissed him, lightly at first before deepening it when Cas’ hands flew up to wrap his arms around Deans neck. This was it, this was everything Cas wanted. He wanted Dean. It was always Dean.
Dean pulled away after a few moments, his eyes looking deeply into Cas’. He bit his lip and pulled Cas even closer to him.
“Stay.”
