Work Text:
Asahina Mafuyu and Yoisaki Kanade have had a very close connection since, forever. They cared for each other very much, considering Kanade was a big help to Mafuyu. Though, Mafuyu had something she didn't express.
"Mafuyu, are you listening?"
"Yes, I'm sorry."
"Alright well-"
This secret kept Mafuyu distracted at school. It was not like her to think about something this intensely. You may be asking, what is this secret? Well...
She'd developed feelings for none other than, Yoisaki Kanade.
Even though Mafuyu had feelings for her, she never brought it up to her. Nor did she bring it up to anyone else. She didn't find it necessary. Even though it was destroyed her life, she didn't say anything because it didn't matter to anyone else...Right?
That was until...Honami came into the picture.
Honami was often seen around Kanade, and since Mafuyu was also around Kanade, the two talked throughout their journey with Kanade.
Even though they went to the same school, they didn't get to know each other as well as they wanted to. Which lead to them hanging out.
"Asahina-senpai, you really have a keen eye for clothing! I never expected I'd find something this nice."
"Really? I just picked out what would go good with your figure."
"You're so lucky! You don't have to spend hours getting dressed, do you?"
"No, not usually."
Honami and Mafuyu were out shopping for some clothes for the summer. Kanade was at home working so, she didn't come along. That just have Honami and Mafuyu more time to communicate.
"Say, Mafuyu."
"Yes?"
"You're really attached to Kanade, aren't you?"
Mafuyu stopped for a bit. Did she know? No, that wasn't possible. Unless, Mafuyu made it obvious. But she was good at keeping up a front so...what could she be doing?
"O-Oh yeah... She's a great friend. I hope I can repay her for what she's done for me."
"Hehe, that's sweet."
"But.."
"Hm?"
"N-Nevermind. Let's go eat, I'm starving!"
"Alright, where should we go?"
The two walked out and spent the rest of the evening together. Once the sun started to set, they went their separate ways. Once Honami left, Mafuyu almost lost her balance.
"...She likes her, doesn't she?"
Mafuyu dragged her way home with a feeling of anxiety coming over her. She knew she couldn't chose who fell inlove with Kanade, but this really made her upset. It wasn't Honami's fault.
Still, Mafuyu couldn't be sure. She thought things would be okay. Everything was going to be fine. Thast what she hoped for.
(Time skip)
A year or two have now passed. Kanade was starting to take care of herself more than ever before. Honmai got a full time job as a housekeeper. Mafuyu changed a lot as well. They didn't feel comfortable in their body anymore. They felt like they needed to be someone else. Luckily, Mizuki was able to help. Mizuki helped cut their hair, get better clothes, and an overall more comfortable look. Mafuyu felt...better. They felt so free...to not be a girl.
One thing he needed to do, was explain this to Kanade. He hadn't gotten the chance to. Thankfully, they were both finally free on a Saturday evening. So, they met up.
Mafuyu waited for Kanade in a small, home styled cafe. Kanade came in, stood around looking for Mafuyu for a bit, found him, and sat down.
"Woah, Mafuyu, you look so different."
"Thank you, that's what I wanted to talk about to you."
"What do you mean?"
"You see..."
While Mafuyu was explaining his transfer to Kanade, he grabbed his hands and started to stutter. He was terrified.
"So, I was hoping I could...stay by your side."
"Mafuyu..."
Mafuyu held his breath until Kanade responded. Suddenly they felt a touch on his hands. It was Kanade. She was gently holding his hands together.
"It doesn't matter what you decide to be, Mafuyu. As long as we stay as friends, I'm happy to accept you. You're important to be, I'm glad to be with you, Mafuyu."
Mafuyu blushed and smiles back at Kanade.
"Thank you, Kanade."
They talked some more and reconnected. It's been a long time since they've talked like this. They've been so busy with life, that they didn't get to see each other as much anymore. Mafuyu was getting into a college and was busy with entrance exams. Kanade also got a job as a music commissioner, just like her dad.
It felt nice to be like this again. Mafuyu felt nice. They both felt nice. Though, Kanade had something to confess...
"Ah, Mafuyu, I had something I wanted to tell you as well!"
"Hm? What is it?"
"Well, I actually had something going on. By something I mean that me and Honami are..."
Mafuyu lost the light in his eyes. He didn't want to hear what Kanade would say next. But, he sat there. Quiet. Kanade was blushing. The complete opposite of Mafuyu.
"...Dating?"
Mafuyu finished the sentence for Kanade and looked down at his tea. He felt sick to his stomach, but he couldn't show it to poor Kanade.
"Y-Yes! How did you know?"
"Just a gut feeling, you two are close after all!"
Mafuyu let out a small laugh and smiled. Kanade did the same. They had some pastries and some more tea while talking. This time, Mafuyu felt awkward. I mean, he was sitting at the same table with the love of his life even though they already had a girlfriend.
He really was hopeless.
"Yikes, this time already? I have some errands to run! I'm sorry, Mafuyu."
Kanade got up from her seat and started to walk towards the door. Suddenly, something grabbed her wrist.
"Kanade, wait!"
"Huh?"
Mafuyu reached out and grabbed Kanade by the wrist, tightening the grip a bit with each minute passing.
"... Haven't you realized it yet?"
Mafuyu spoke without thinking. He didn't want to confront Kanade about it. He never wanted to until a few days ago. Kanade never noticed it herself because of how dense she was. So, Maufuyu tried to talk to her about it. Now, it's was too late.
"Realize what?"
Mafuyu took note of what he said and almost covered his mouth.
"N-Nothing. Go on ahead! I bet those errands are important."
"Are you sure?"
"Yup!"
"Alright...Stay safe, Mafuyu."
Kanade slipped her wrist from Mafuyu's grip and continued walking.
Mafuyu didn't know what to do. All he did was finish his tea and pastries.
Along with a few swelling eyes.
(Time skip)
More years have passed. Mafuyu was now 23, so was Kanade. Honami was also 22. Honami and Kanade still had a healthy, happy relationship. Mafuyu supported them all the way, but deel down,
He was envious.
Mafuyu really tried to be happy, but he couldn't let it go. It wasn't easy getting over something you love when they've been a huge part of your life. Still, Mafuyu kept a happy face.
A facade.
Mafuyu spent most of his time in college, doing work, trying to become a nurse, and so on. Kanade was still a commissioner, and Honami still a housekeeper. They've both graduated, except for Mafuyu, who was at his last year. Mafuyu often felt lonely being alone in a dorm room, since his roommate was never there before 1am.
Lonely.
He stayed awake at night wondering if maybe that feeling would go away if he confessed before Kanade got into a relationship. But, there was no use over dwelling about it now. Work had to get done.
Thankfully, whenever Mafuyu felt lonely, he called over Mizuki and Ena. The three usually ate at their usual diner, went shopping, walked around a park. Mafuyu felt distracted everytime he was with his friends. He felt comfortable around his friends.
Sadly...He wouldn't feel comfortable for long.
(4 months later)
Kanade and Mafuyu were out again. This time, they were out at the carnival with Honami and some other friends. They brought at least 6 friends. Which made 9 people in total. The cost was VERY pricey.
"Ena, Ena!! Look at the cotton candy!!"
"Mizuki..."
Mizuki and Ena were eating at the food stalls.
"Icchan, can you try to win this for me? Oh and Shiho! Can you win me this?"
Ichika, Shiho, and Saki were winning prizes.
"Honami! Let's go on this next!"
"E-Emu, that looks scary...!"
Honami and Emu were going on rides
"...So, how've you been, Mafuyu?"
"Great! How about you?"
"I feel fine."
Kanade and Mafuyu were on the ferris wheel.
Alone...
They didn't have much to talk about, despite them being good friends. They sort of... drifted apart since Kanade got with Honami. The conversations got a bit awkward at times.
"S-So, Mafuyu, how's college?"
"It's good. I'm going to graduate in a few weeks."
"Oh, really?"
"Yup."
"That's awesome...!"
Kanade sat a bit uncomfortably. It wasn't like Kanade to just tense up in her seat. Mafuyu noticed this. Not only that, he noticed the strange look on her face. He didn't know what could be wrong.
"Kanade, are you...okay?"
"H-Huh? Oh yes!"
"Are you sure? You seem uncomfortable. Do you...need some space?"
"No no! It's nothing like that! It's just..."
"Just?"
"I have something I want to tell you."
"...Yes?"
"Mafuyu."
Mafuyu was a scared about what he was about to hear. He didn't know if it was good or bad. But...He knew it was extremely important.
"...Yes, Kanade?"
"Are you sure you won't freak out about it?"
"U-Uhm, yes..?"
"Alright."
Kanade was very nervous, which is what Mafuyu didn't understand. Surely this wasn't that bad, right? And if it was, why was Kanade making sure Mafuyu wouldn't freak out?
"Mafuyu..."
"..."
"I proposed to Honami, and she
...said yes. So, would you be my best man...?"
Mafuyu froze. He didn't think he'd hear something like that. His heart almost broke into pieces. But he needed to be happy for them. And for Kanade to ask to be his best man, he had to be happier.
Kanade was beaming brightest smile ever. She was extremely happy. She was happy with Honami. Mafuyu knew that.
"Kanade..."
"...?"
Mafuyu almost cried trying to get out his words. No one would know how to put his feelings into words. But it definitely wasn't something anyone would want when you've been having an unrequited relationship for over 6 years or more, especially since the other party doesn't know. Still, Mafuyu accepted.
"I'd be honored to be your best man, Kanade."
"Thank you so much, Mafuyu."
Kanade stretched over to Mafuyu and gave him a hug. Kanade was starting to become a very tight hugger. Though, Mafuyu didn't care. He was happy he could at least bring back a bit of Kanade from years ago.
Years ago...Mafuyu wished he could go back to those times.
(3 months later)
Mafuyu finally graduated from college. He was living in his own home. It was a small home near the diner him and Nightcord used to meet up. Kanade and Honami also found a house together, and they were living happily. They were all satisfied.
Well...Semi-satisfied was the right word.
The wedding was also coming up. It was right around the corner. Everyone was panicking to get things ready before the big day. Honami and Kanade were panicking themselves too. They knew everything was in good hands. They didn't need to worry about anything since it was already taken care of, but they just couldn't shake that feeling.
So, they went out more often. They went to restaurants, parks, fairs, everything and anything you could think of.
"Honami, where do you want to go today?"
"I heard there's a new dessert in the bakery over there. Want to go try it?"
"Sure!"
They always linked hands wherever they went. Even a small kiss before they stepped out the front door. Since they were busy with work, they were always overjoyed to spend time with one another. They got weird looks at times, but they really didn't care. Now that they were fiances, they felt like they were on cloud nine.
After some walking, they made it to the bakery. They always asked to get a table outside, if possible, and that exactly what they did. It was a good thing that the bakery had its own garden with plenty of tables for people to sit at. Luckily, they found a seat.
"Hello madams, can I start you off with any drinks?"
"Of course! I'll have some hot tea."
"Noted...How about you?"
"I-I'll have a...Lemonade!"
"Noted as well... I'll come by with your drinks later."
The waiter walked away. It was now just Honami and Kanade. Just how they liked it.
"So, dear~ What'd you think of the bakery?"
"H-Honami! I think it's nice, but what's with that?"
"Hehe, nothing at all. Just wanted to see how you'd react. We're getting married after all, shouldn't we be closer?"
"I guess so, but I don't know if names are exactly what we're looking for..."
"Eh? Why not! We could make it work. Besides, I'd love to call you names, I think you'll like it too~"
"H-Honami!"
"Alright alright! I'll stop."
They both laughed and shared some smiles. It was nice to just laugh after jokes like these, expect Honami was joking...
"Sorry for the wait, here are you drinks."
"Thank you very much."
The waiter came back with Honami's hot tea and Kanade's lemonade. The drinks looked heavenly. It was lunch time, but they still hadn't eaten or drank anything. They were starving.
"Are you two ready to order?"
"Yes."
"Okay, what can I get you?"
"Just one of these, please!"
"Okay...what would you like?"
Kanade froze a tiny bit. She thought Honami would be sharing with her so she was prepared to order anything.
"U-Uhm...I'll have the same as her."
"Alright, I'll get those two for you."
The waiter walked away again. Kanade and Honami were alone, again.
"Kanade, you seemed really anxious when the waiter asked what you wanted, are you okay?"
"Yeah, I'm fine. I just expected for us to share is all. I wasn't expecting to order anything..."
"Oh, I see. I was also planning for us to share, but we could take the other home and share it too. We can share this one as well."
Honami rested her head in her left hand and closed her eyes while smiling. Blushing while in the process.
"Kanade, I love you."
"Yeah, me too."
It was usual for a soon to be married couple to say I love you, but for these two, it wasn't often you see them showing affection with words. They almost only showed affection through actions. Still, it meant just as much.
"Honami."
"Yes, love."
Kanade jumped a bit in her seat. She thought Honami was done with names, but she wasn't. She was now aware that Honami was dead serious.
"H-Have you been getting along with Mafuyu? I should've probably asked that years ago...but I kept forgetting."
"Yeah, I've been getting along with him well. I'm glad he's in a healthy state now. Especially after he left everything from 6 years ago, behind."
"... It's already been that long? I still remember the first day I met Mafuyu. It feels like it was yesterday. I'm just glad he was able to get through to his mom. Still, I can't help but feel happy that I actually was able to...help someone."
"That's just your charm, Kanade. You should be happy you made Mafuyu happy. You made hundreds of others happy too. Cause if it wasn't for you, Mafuyu wouldn't be where he is now. He wouldn't be a nurse, he wouldn't have a healthy life, and most importantly, he wouldn't have lived for as long as he has."
Honami finally opened her eyes. She looked longingly at Kanade. It's like Kanade's face was the only thing in front of her. She simply sat there and smiled some more. Kanade was sucked in by the smile. That smile was one Kanade never wanted to lose.
"Thank you, Honami!"
As soon as they finished talking, the waiter came by with the dessert. They said their thanks, and ate some. Since there was only one spoon, Honami and Kanade had to share it. They were both too embarrassed to ask for a second one, so they just worked with what they got.
"Ah, Kanade, you have some cream right here."
"Where?"
"I'll get it for you don't worry."
Honami leaned over and wiped Kanade's cheek with a napkin. When she got it all off, she leaned back into her chair and ate some more of the dessert.
(If you're wondering what the dessert is, I don't even know what it is so just use your imagination.)
"Honami, there's something else I wanted to ask you."
"Yes?"
"Are you...excited for the wedding?"
"Oh I'm overjoyed! I'm surprised though...I thought you'd be more excited since you proposed to me."
"I feel as if I should also be more excited but I'm still letting it sink in. I've been letting it sink in because I'm so shocked. So much time has passed and I'm still in disbelief."
"I get that."
".... We're in our 20's now, Honami."
"We are."
(A few days before the wedding)
Mafuyu was out with Kanade and the rest of the bridesmaids and groomsmen at the venue before the wedding to see how the wedding would all be planned out. Sadly, Honami had matters to attend to with her family, so she couldn't come. Which made things a lot harder...
"Okay, bridesmaids I need you to stand here, and the groomsmen to stand on the opposite side, parallel to them."
Kanade was in charge since she was basically the "groom". Not sure if you can call her that since she's also wearing a dress, but we're just going with that to make things easier.
"Mafuyu, I need you to stand near the arch in front of the groomsmen's line. Since you're my best man, you'll be next to me. And Emu, you'll do the same as Mafuyu but on your side since you're with Honami as the maid of honor."
So far, the practice hasn't been all that bad, but everyone was tired and Kanade handling it on her own was tough.
(After some more practice and directing from Kanade)
"Alright, everything seems to be okay for now. You may get lunch now."
Kanade announced her final speech for the time being and immediately threw herself onto the bench
"Ugh....This is so tiring."
"Need a drink?"
Mafuyu came up and sat next to Kanade with a juice bottle in hand.
"Oh, thanks."
Kanade accepted the drink and drank almost half of it. Not only was practicing all of this hard because only one person was managing it, but it was outside and the heat was killing everybody. So, it was natural for everyone to be a mess.
"You sure you don't need any help, Kanade?"
"Yeah... we're almost done here anyway. Besides, I want to make sure everyone stays at ease for now. They are all excited. I also don't want anyone to worry..."
Kanade stared a bit up into the sky, avoiding the sun from going into her eyes with one hand. Mafuyu glanced over. Kanade was just as beautiful as ever.
[Snap out of it, Mafuyu...you shouldn't be thinking those things. She's getting married. You can't be regretting it all on one of her most life changing days.]
Mafuyu kept thinking about that. That was the only thing that went through his mind. It was always,
[Why didn't I say it sooner?]
[Whatever, she won't care.]
[I can't let it go, but I can't tell her that!]
[I shouldn't think these things.]
It was also tough for Mafuyu. Being at a wedding venue where he wished he'd be the one walking down the aisle, or watching the love of his life walk down that aisle.
But, he couldn't do anything about it. He couldn't blame anyone for it either. He only had himself to blame. Just the thought of blaming someone else made this skin crawl. He thought long and hard about what needed to be done. And telling Kanade how he felt, wasn't one of them.
"Hello? Mafuyu, are you alright?"
Mafuyu snapped out of the trance he didn't realize he was in.
"O-Oh, my bad. I was thinking about how the real day is going to go...I'm very excited to see how it will all turn out."
"Man... Everyone is more excited than I am."
"What do you mean...?"
"Well, Honami and I went out the other day, and we were talking about multiple things, but Honami was surprised that I wasn't as excited as she thought I'd be."
"Uh huh..."
"And, I do want to be more excited but...I can't shake the feeling that something is missing."
"Missing?"
"Yeah, it's hard to describe, but it's there. I'm happy, healthy, and have good friends. So, why do I feel like this?"
Kanade looked at her drink, while swishing it around. Mafuyu looked at her with a worried look. Could she possibly...be on to something? He didn't know. He didn't want to know.
"Whatever that missing piece may be, I'm sure you'll find out about it soon, and I'll help you through it."
"Thank you, Mafuyu."
Kanade leaned over and gave Mafuyu a sideways hug. Mafuyu accepted the gesture and hugged her back. Mafuyu and Kanade continued to talk and drink some more juice during their break. They had a good time. They haven't been able to see each other much due to Mafuyu being a nurse in training, and Kanade with all this wedding stuff. They liked being together.
"Oh, break is almost over."
"Really? Time flies."
"Sure does. Come on, let's go tell everyone."
"Yup."
Kanade got up and reached her hand to Mafuyu. Mafuyu slightly blushed, and conjoined her hand with Kanade's. Mafuyu lifted herself, and as soon as she did, Kanade's grip was lost. That same grip was the one she used all those years ago. He really did miss that grip.
(Day of the wedding)
It was finally the day of the wedding. The day everyone was VERY excited, but nervous, for. Even though it's an exciting day, lots of crazy things could happen.
Honami and the bridesmaids, Mizuki, Ena, Ichika, Saki, Shiho, and Minori, we're getting ready at about 10am. They were doing their hair, makeup, and all of the above. Expect that's not really what happened.
"Honami, you're dress is getting caught!"
"Ah, seriously?"
"Here let me fix it."
"Thank you, Ena."
(A few minutes later)
"Mizuki..."
"Huh, what's wrong?"
"I can't find my makeup, could I use yours?"
"Of course, Minori."
(More minutes later)
"Guys, we're running a bit late!"
"You've got to be joking, Saki."
"Sadly, Icchan, I'm not."
Incidents kept happening left and right.
...But the groomsmen's dressing room was even worse. We're not even going to get into that.
(A bit of time before the ceremony)
"Alright Mafuyu, how do I look?"
"For the last time, Kanade, you look gorgeous."
"I'm sorry, it's just I'm so nervous! I can't wait to see what Honami looks like."
"I bet she'll look amazing as well."
Mafuyu was helping Kanade stay calm during the big reveal when everyone was going to see what everyone looked like. Everyone was in their spots and the seats were filled with people. Including friends, relatives, and most importantly, parents.
Kanade was hoping her dad would get better in time to come to the wedding. She'd hoped that for a long time. Ever since her and Honami started dating even. Still, she wasn't expecting for him to actually show up.
His condition was the best, but he was a lot better. He didn't know much about Kanade yet, and how he's her father, but he still came. When Kanade saw him in the front seat, she almost cried.
"Kanade, don't cry. It's your big day. I'm sure he wouldn't want to see that look on you."
"Y-Yeah, you're right."
Mafuyu gave Kanade a pat on the shoulder and Kanade pulled herself together.
Mafuyu wished he'd be as happy as Kanade was to see her parents in the seats. Sadly, he wasn't all too excited. His parents were being a lot more accepting than before, especially after coming out, but that didn't shake the feeling of them just faking it. Mafuyu knew his parents, and he knew that they aren't happy with his decisions. He couldn't let go of the fear and trauma.
"Hey, Mafuyu, the ceremony's about to start. You ready?"
"Oh, yes. I feel like I should be the one telling you that..."
"Hehe, well saying it for now.
Kanade smiled at Mafuyu one last time before facing back to the front. It was time for Honami to come down the aisle. Everyone was preparing. Then, the music played.
The flower boy walked down first. Since they didn't have younger girls to do it, they got Minori's little brother to throw flowers around. He was still very happy. Honami's little brother came next. He was the ring bearer. He was also excited to be a part of the wedding.
And Honami walked down the aisle. She looked amazing.
She wore a long white gown with a trail. Her veil covered her face which was attached to her braided bun. Even with the veil covering her, everyone could see her blushing.
Kanade was starstruck. Her eyes widened and the corners of her mouth made their way up to form a huge smile. A smile that would be absolutely priceless. A look that would be priceless.
Mafuyu wished she'd look at him that way.
Mafuyu wished he'd be the one walking down that aisle.
He wanted to be the one who'd spend his life with Kanade.
But now was not the time to feel pity. He needed to be happy for Kanade. For Honami. For both of them. Or else, what was the point of agreeing to tag along in the wedding? The officiant then started his speech.
"Welcome family and friends. We are gathered here today to celebrate the marriage of Honami Mochizuki and Kanade Yoisaki. This is not the start of a new relationship but an acknowledgment of the next chapter in their lives together. Today, they will affirm this bond formally and publicly. Not only are they celebrating their love for each other, but the love for everyone here as well. The love that stretches through parents, siblings, extended family, and best friends. Without this love, today wouldn't be this joyous."
Mafuyu couldn't even handle the first paragraph or two the officiant spoke without clenching his hand into a small fist. He needed to stay grateful, calm, thankful, everything.
The officiant was now announcung the declaration of intent.
"Do you Kanade take Honami to be your lawfully wedded wife? To have and to hold, in sickness and in health, in good times and not so good times, for richer or poorer, keeping yourself unto her for as long as you both shall live?"
"I-I do!"
"Do you Honami take Kanade to be your lawfully wedded wife? To have and to hold, in sickness and in health, in good times and not so good times, for richer or poorer, keeping yourself unto her for as long as you both shall live?"
"I do."
The officiant continued. But the more he did, the more Mafuyu's heart ached. His hand was not in a fist, but was now holding a tight grip onto the trim if his suit.
"Now, a ring is an unbroken circle, with ends that have been joined together, and it represents your union. It is a symbol of infinity, and of your infinite affection. When you look at these rings on your hands, be reminded of this day, your commitment, and the love you now, and forever will, feel for each other."
Mafuyu gripped tighter.
"Honami, place the ring on Kanade's finger and repeat after me: Kanade, I give you this ring as a symbol of my love with the pledge: to love you today, tomorrow, always, and forever."
Tighter.
"Kanade, I give you this ring as a symbol of my love with the pledge: to love you today, tomorrow, always, and forever."
Honami finished and the officiant finalized his part of the ring exchange.
"And now...Kanade, place the ring on Honami's finger and repeat the same words."
Mafuyu looked at Kanade from where he stood. He could just barely catch a glimpse of her face, she was looking longingly. Mafuyu looked carefully at Kanade while she spoke.
"Honami, I give you this ring as a symbol of my love with the pledge: to love you today, tomorrow, always, and forever."
A small sigh escaped Mafuyu's mouth before he broke into a slight smile. A smile that he'd kept on from when he was 17. The officiant then continued his last part of the speech.
"You have pledged to be joined in marriage. You have now sealed this pledge with your wedding rings. By the authority vested in me by the great capitol of Japan, I now pronounce you married! You may kiss!"
Kanade quickly lifted Honami's veil and threw her arms around her neck. Before Honami would react to this, Kanade's lips were already against hers. Honami stood in shock for a little bit until she kissed Kanade back. They held each other tight afterwards.
The garden filled with with claps and cheering. Mafuyu clapped ever so sightly. His smile faded for a little bit. But just for a bit. He couldn't show anyone how upset he was.
"Mafuyu! Time for photos!"
"A-Ah, coming!"
Emu's voice interrupted his thoughts. Her voice was enough to stretch from out of town at this point...
First, it was family photos. Honami took her family photos before Kanade. Kanade made sure she'd take them first because...she didn't have much family left. And having her dad with her would make him freak out, that could not happen.
Suddenly, the photographer blurted out,
"Next family photo."
Uh oh. Kanade slowly shifted herself towards the backdrop and let her head drop low. Then, a small embrace closed up on her.
"You didn't think you'd take the photo yourself, did you?"
"H-Huh..?"
"Come on, Kanade! We're a huge, loving family!"
"Yes, Tsukasa is right."
Saki, Tsukasa, and Toya joined in. Since she didn't have much family, the Tenma's were like her second one. She loved having them around.
"Thank you, all of you."
Kanade was happy that she didn't have to take photos alone. It would've been pretty upsetting for everyone too.
(After photos)
It was now the hour for everyone to just drink away. Well...try not to drink too much anyway. Let's just say some people didn't follow that.
Honami had a glass or...five
Kanade drank only one or two.
Mafuyu had about two or less.
Emu didn't drink at all.
Mizuki and Rui were drinking as if it were their last.
Ena was trying to control Mizuki and Rui, so she only had one glass.
Minori had only two.
Saki and Ichika shared one.
Shiho didn't drink any.
Shizuku drank about four.
Haruka also drank as if it were her last thanks to Rui convincing her.
Tsukasa tried to calm Haruka so he didn't have much.
Akito had sadly joined Mizuki, Rui, and Haruka after a whole bunch of guilt tripping and bribing.
The party was already fired up.
(Dinner)
It was now dinner time. Everyone was enjoying their meal. Well whoever wasn't drunk, enjoyed their meal. There was lots of chatter and conversations. Mafuyu mostly sat quiet, eating whatever he had on his plate. The food was quite good. He still found it so different to finally be able to taste what's there.
"Mafuyu, are you going to give out your speech?"
"Ah, yes. Sorry, Kanade."
"No need. Go ahead whenever you're ready!
Honami's father has already spoken his speech, so, it was time for Mafuyu to make his.
"Hello everyone. I'm glad to see you all here to celebrate Honami and Kanade's big day! I'd like to start off by saying how much of an honor it is to be standing here and talking today. Back when I first met Kanade, things were really rough. I had been going through an immense state of unwellness. But, she helped me a whole bunch. So, I'd like for her to spread that same feeling to Honami too. I'd love for you're relationship to be full with good times. I'd like to say..."
Mafuyu froze. He practiced this speech over and over. Still, this part always made him shiver.
"H-How much of an adventure it was to be your... friend, Kanade. And how much I got to know you, H-Honami!"
Mafuyu was finished. He felt like thousands of thorns were stabbing him while speaking. It felt horrible. He was glad he could at least get through it without hesitation.
He sat back down and immediately drank some more. But not enough to finish his glass.
He made a mental note to add this moment to the list of reasons why he wishes he never existed.
(After dinner)
It was now time for the cake cutting! Probably one of the most exciting parts for everyone.
Honami grabbed the knife and shifted it toward the cake. Kanade later joined next to Honami and conjoined hands with her on the knife handle. They lifted the knife and cut a slice off. After they cut the piece, everyone else started to get their own.
"Open wide, Kanade!"
"H-Honami...I can feed myself."
"I know, but I still want to feed it to you!"
"...fine."
Honami was also starting to get a kick out of Kanade by feeding it to her. Still, Kanade couldn't resist that sweet smile. So, she opened her mouth and let Honami place the cake into her mouth.
"Is it good, love?"
Kanade jumped. She was now aware that Honami wasn't joking earlier when she mentioned that she could make names work.
"Y-Yes..."
She'd have to get used to Honami calling her that now.
"Oh, Kanade, you have something right here."
"Huh? Where?"
Kanade quickly rubbed her cheeks before she was stolen away by Honami overly kissing her. Honami went deep into the kiss, almost making Kanade fall over. Still, they were both happy.
"Honami! I almost fell out of my chair!"
"Hehe, sorry sorry!"
The two still acted like highschool sweethearts even though it was the day of their wedding.
(Dances)
Ah yes, dancing. One of the most important parts of a wedding! Despite having lots of practice, there were a few slipups. Still, that made the party a whole lot funner.
First, Honami and Kanade danced. They danced a slow, easy, and nice song. Kanade actually started to cry during it because of how beautiful the music and dance was to her.
Then, the parents joined. After Honami's parents danced with them, it was just Honami and Kanade again.
"I'm sorry you have to do this, Kanade."
"No no, it's okay. It's my fault after all."
"Don't say that! Let's just relax, okay?"
"Alright."
Kanade gave Honami a kiss on the cheek and they continued. After all that, they did more dances. Then, it was time for everyone to dance the night away! With most of them drinking even more. Especially Rui, Mizuki, Haruka, and Akito... Despite them being way too drunk.
Mafuyu wished he'd be the one that would be enjoying the party.
"Mafuyu, it's so good to see you after all these years!"
"...It's good to see you too, mom."
"Say, when are you going to get married?"
"E-Eh? Well...I don't expect it to happen anytime soon...!"
"Seriously? Even after you're all grown up?"
"Yeah... relationships have been difficult for me right now."
"I see...well have fun. Me and your dad are going to go now. Stay safe."
"Yup. You too."
Mafuyu's parents waved and they left. Mafuyu wiped the smile off and went to go pour some more wine into his glass. A sigh was let out as soon as the liquid entered the glass.
"...Wine is the one of the only things keeping me going at this point."
Mafuyu decided to go somewhere private. After his mom left, he felt a lot better, but it wasn't enough to make him enjoy the day. There weren't many places to go since it was outside, but he managed. He was able to find a patio not too far from the venue and settled there.
He sat hunched over, swishing hid wine around the glass.
"Ugh, I'm so pathetic..."
Mafuyu slowly drank some more and hunched over again. He started to look out into the night sky. There wasn't much light left. Just the stars and the fairy lights that were strung up on the patio.
"Ah, Mafuyu! There you are!"
A noise came from beside Mafuyu.
"K-Kanade..?"
"I've been trying to look for you! I know parties aren't really your thing, but I didn't think you'd be hidden away."
"Eh, I just wanted some time alone. But, shouldn't you be with Honami and the others?"
"No, not really... Honami and some of the others, especially Mizuki, Rui, Haruka, and Akito, are drunk. Dancing on the dance floor, while drunk."
"Ah, how many drinks have they had?"
"Honami drank about five, and the others....I lost count."
"Yikes."
"Exactly..."
Kanade sat down next to Mafuyu and also had a wine glass in her hand. She also has already changed into something more comfortable than her wedding dress.
"Speaking of which, you aren't drinking much. I also made sure to bring your favorite! Unless you don't drink as much as you used to..."
"I've been trying to slow down my liquor, especially since I'm trying to find a job as a nurse."
"Ooh, makes sense."
Mafuyu was glad he could sit down and have a chat with Kanade. With all this wedding stuff happening, they had barely to no time to talk to each other.
"Y'know, I miss going out and having some drinks with you."
"Seriously? I thought you went with Honami?"
"Oh, I do! But we haven't had much time for just us. I want to share another drink with my bestest friend ever!"
Mafuyu was happy, until those words came out from Kanade's mouth. They pulled him back to reality. They were friends.
Nothing more.
"Then how about now? Cheers, Kanade!"
"Sure, cheers!"
The two clinked their glasses and took a sip. Mafuyu realized that he poured his favorite. He just took what he felt first. He was grateful Kanade and Honami even remembered what he drank from about 3 years ago.
"Hey, your parents already left, right?"
"Yeah, they did."
"...Are you happy?"
"Sure am. I get their my parents, but I still can't help but feel uncomfortable around them. Even when I see them, it's just strange."
"Hm..."
"Still, it was good to see your father out there."
"I know right! I'm so happy that he got better in time....I hope he can get even better so I can tell him even more!"
"Hehe, me too."
The two just had a nice time, hanging out there. They drank, talked, laughed, and smiled. Like just how it used to be, except Mafuyu was experiencing real feelings. He was actually having a great time.
"Mafuyu..."
"Yes?"
"...You're starting to remind me of my mom, I didn't have much time to spend with her, but you remind me a lot of her."
"Where's this coming from?"
"I don't know... I've just been making the similarities. Even from long ago."
"What...do you mean?"
"Well, remember when you got sick and had to stay at my house?"
"Yeah..."
"That was when I started to make connections between you and my mom."
"How so?"
"...When you were there on my bed, you looked exactly like her when I visited her in the hospital. She was suffering. You looked like that too. That's why I was desperately trying to help you feel better."
"Kanade.."
"I knew you were going to be okay, but I couldn't shake that image of my mom out of my head. It was...not good to say the least."
Kanade drank some more from her cup. She didn't like going into detail about her mother, but she knew she was safe around Mafuyu.
"But there are plenty of good stuff as well, like how kind you and her are! There wasn't one day where my mom couldn't make me smile. You were able to do teg exact same thing. You two were so honest."
"...Honest?"
"Mhm, it's incredible how good you are at it!"
"T-Thanks, I guess?"
Kanade put her glass down and let herself lay back onto the patio chair. She stared far into the distance, there wasn't much to look at, but there was still some light.
"Kanade, I need to-"
"Huh? Did you say something?"
".....No, nevermind! Just said something out without thinking."
"Are you sure?"
"Yeah, I'm sure."
Mafuyu was able to stop himself before he spoke any further. He was going to tell Kanade. He was going to tell her the thing that had been annoying him for years. He didn't even think of the day and time. Thank God he stopped himself.
"Mafuyu, I wanted to ask you something."
"Hm?"
"So, for a while now, you've been on edge. It almost feels like you've been like that since, forever. Is something wrong? You can tell me anything!"
Mafuyu stopped. He sat still for a few seconds. He thought he was able to cover up his worries pretty well. Though, Kanade could see through it all, especially when it came to Mafuyu.
"...I-I can't tell you right now. I don't know if I ever could."
"What do you mean?"
"It's...too late."
"I don't think so!"
"Huh?"
"It's never too late for anything! And if it's just a statement, then it'll last forever. You could tell me when I'm 80 and it still wouldn't be too late."
Mafuyu looked straight at Kanade. He never heard such words before. Not even his parents had him this surprised.
"... you'd probably hate me."
"As if! We've been through so much together, I don't think a sentence or two could ruin all this."
"Then..."
Mafuyu drank more from his glass. He lifted his sleeve and wiped off some that didn't make it fully into his mouth.
"Then, can I wait?"
"Of course you can!"
"...Thank you, Kanade."
"Anything for you. You're an amazing friend."
"You too."
Kanade leaned in and hugged Mafuyu. It was a bit of a surprise but Mafuyu still accepted. Then...
"Mafuyu, thank you for coming into my life."
Mafuyu's eyes widened. Kanade was thankful for meeting someone like him? That's absurd. At least, that's what Mafuyu thought. So, he started to cry. He didn't even notice, but Kanade did.
"Hey, why are you crying?"
"I-I am?"
"Yes, a whole bunch."
Mafuyu broke from the hug and dapped under his eyes. He was infact, crying. He was able to realize that he was crying, so it was strange that he didn't feel it now.
"I'll go get you some water."
"You don't have to do that, I'm fine."
"But you're probably going to want to cry some more."
"I won't -"
Kanade patted Mafuyu on the shoulder.
"I know you want to. I don't know why, but I know you do."
"Kanade..."
Kanade got up and headed to get some water. In the meantime, Mafuyu was left alone. He looked into his wine glass, almost empty. He looked near the venue, from what he could see, people looked like they were having fun.
And in that moment, Mafuyu cried. He cried and cried. He didn't think he could cry this hard. Still, he was able to keep quiet.
"I'm back!"
"H-Hi..."
"See, I told you. Here."
"T-Thank you."
Kanade handed Mafuyu the water bottle and Mafuyu took it. He opened it and drank little by little.
"Mafuyu, not to pressure you, but when do you think you could tell me?"
"...I really don't know. But definitely a long time after this."
"I see...No rush, though. Take your time!"
"I will."
Mafuyu drank some more water and closed it. Mafuyu's tears were already dried up at this point. The two then kind of just, sat there. No words, no movement, no eye contact, nothing. Almost as if they were strangers on a bullet train or something. And then...uhm....
"Kanade~!"
Honami came into the picture.
"There you are! We were looking for you~"
"Honami, are you feeling okay..?"
"Yeah! I feel fine!"
Honami was definitely drunk. I mean, she almost tripped over herself getting over to the patio.
"Honami, come sit down so you don't fall..."
"Okay~!"
Kanade patted an open spot on the patio next to her where Honami could sit. Honami, not being careful all, sat down.
"Oh hi, Mafuyu!"
"Hi, Honami."
"How have you been~?"
"Fine, thank you."
"That's good!..."
After that small chat, Honami scooted closer to Kanade and let her head rest on Kanade's shoulder. Honami was tired and drunk mess.
"Gosh, Honami...You had a lot, huh?"
Kanade kissed Honami on the head and looked towards Mafuyu shaking her head with a smile.
"Look at you, Kanade! You got a pretty girl laying on your shoulder."
"A very drunk one too!"
They laughed and that was where the rest of the conversations ended.
A bittersweet Mafuyu.
A caring Kanade.
And a tired Honami.
Despite everything that Mafuyu was feeling, he was happy. He was happy Kanade was satisfied, even if he wasn't. Kanade's feelings mattered more to him than his own.
Even then, Mafuyu wouldn't be so sad seeing Kanade and Honami anymore.
Just maybe...
