worth a shot

Summary:

"So, did you miss me?"

Yoohan sighed in exasperation, skillfully twisting his body away from the grabby hands from beside him. "Give it up already. You've been asking the same damn question the whole night."

He could hear the amusement from Jay's chuckle. Damn him. "Well, you haven't answered me. Your husband's finally back after two weeks of being overseas, and you didn't even give me a proper greeting."

Yoohan's shoulders stiffened at the stabbing words. It's subtle, but he could hear the underlying hurt behind Jay's seemingly light-hearted jab. The hands trying to grope him retreated, and he unconsciously grabbed onto them, hesitantly letting them rest around his waist. "We had video calls every night you weren't here. What's there to miss about?"

An exhausted Jay just returned from overseas, and Yoohan tended to him as best as he could.

Notes:

Hurrah, the first English fic for this absolutely amazing couple!
The setting for this fic is vague since I'm not sure how the story will end, but it's basically set after the main story is over. A side story, if you will.

Also: this is my first time making a new ship tag, so I don't know if I did it right or not. Also also: Please forgive any OOC behaviour, I just want an excuse to write about these two.

24/6/2023: I fixed some stuff here and there after I posted this fic, so if you're here for the second time and feel like something's off, you're not crazy.

Work Text:

Jay shifted their positions on the couch, perching Yoohan on his lap like he weighed nothing. It used to make him upset at the reminder of how stronger he was, but these days it only made his heart thump faster. Jay hummed happily, nuzzling the side of his face gently. "It's not the same. You smell so nice in person, and I get to hug you in my arms like this."

"Stop joking." Yoohan protested weakly, but didn't bother pushing himself off, partly because Jay wouldn't allow it anyway, mostly because he really didn't mind it. Not that he'd ever admit it out loud.

"I don't joke around." Jay said easily, the familiarity of the exchange settling between them like a warm blanket. "You're so adorable, you know that? You spent the entire night waiting for me to come back even though you've been busy. What will you do if I decide to keep you to myself tomorrow, hmm?"

He didn't say anything to that, letting Jay take his fill. Little smooches planted all over his face, his warm, big palms stroking Yoohan's back in an almost absent-minded way. The usual madman would have already pushed him down on the couch and proceeded to absolutely ravish the hell out of him, but this madman was tired and sleepy from staying awake for who knows how many days. Yoohan moved his legs to sit sideways, taking advantage of his position to look down at Jay's insanely handsome face.

Jay quietly planted his jaw on his collarbone, enjoying the attention, no doubt. It also let Yoohan observe the slight but still visible dark circles on his face. He must had been working his ass off in America, trying to tie up any loose ends after the shitshow with Chairman Kim. At the reminder of how he'd played a role in his motivation to overthrow that bastard old man, Yoohan felt his heart softening, reaching out to brush his fingers against the underside of Jay's eyes. "... Aren't you tired? Go to bed."

"Are you coming with?" Jay smiled at him. The genuineness of it caused Yoohan's heart to skip a beat, and he turned his head away, trying to regain composure. "Look at you, being shy. If you keep this up, I might force you to stay up the whole night instead."

Frowning in disapproval, Yoohan pinched the strong arms still wrapped around him. "With you almost passing out? Not a chance."

"Hey, I can get it up anytime I want." Jay teased, securing his hold on Yoohan as he grinded his hips up once. Yoohan pushed down on his shoulders before the horny madman could entertain the idea of going further, glaring at him in warning. "Fine, I'll stop here. But keep your weekend free, or I really might start locking you up in here so you won't go anywhere."

His tone was light and airy, but carried a very real threat. It wasn't the first time Jay made such possessive statements, so Yoohan had already devised a few tactics to diffuse the situation. The first and simplest way to do it was this; he closed the distance and planted a small kiss on Jay's lips, with one of his hands curled up against his biceps.

When he pulled away, Jay was staring at him with a dumbfounded look. It wasn't the first time this happened; for some weird ass reason, he would drop his usual jerkass demeanor when Yoohan made the first move. Not that Yoohan would complain, since it made his job to turn him placid much easier.

Yoohan felt the flush rising up from his neck, and hid his face into Jay's chest. Come on, you can do it. Say it. "I did. I... I missed you."

Silence settled between them, and Yoohan immediately felt ashamed of himself. Fuck, what the hell was he trying to do? It wasn't like Jay didn't know the answer to that question, and it wasn't as if Yoohan couldn't persuade him to go to sleep without saying that kind of mushy stuff. He buried his head even further into Jay's chest, wishing he could climb into his ribs and disappear from the face of the Earth, when he heard and felt it:

Of Jay's beating heart, steadily increasing its tempo.

The unusual occurence caused Yoohan to look up at Jay with widened eyes, and his breath hitched at the sight. His dimples were on full display from how wide his grin was, highlighting his flushed cheeks perfectly. Yoohan had never seen him so happy before, and to think it was caused by something so simple...

It... didn't feel bad at all. Maybe Jay was onto something when he spouted all that nonsense of him being terrified of intimacy because it would make him forget that he'd killed his younger brother. It wasn't hard for him to come to terms with his feelings towards Jay. The hard part was what came after, since he was still unconsciously holding onto his past and feeling like he didn't deserve happiness.

And yet, as Jay embraced him with that dazzling smile, he couldn't help the surge of warmth coursing through him. He really was happy with his current life, and maybe, just maybe... it wouldn't be wrong for him to indulge in this selfishness for a bit.

That still didn't mean he'd say what Jay wanted to hear all the time, though.
