Work Text:
Jason smiled despite the late hour when he heard laughing coming from upstairs. For Damian's 15th birthday, he wanted Colin and Jon to come over and spend the night, and Jason was more than happy to oblige. It wasn't any different than any other weekend, honestly.
They had gotten the reputation of the fun house, so there were frequently other teenagers over, eating their food and being too loud. But Jason would never complain about that. It was nice knowing that Damian was getting those experiences that Jason missed out on since he spent his 15th year dead.
"I don't know how Lian sleeps through that," Roy said as he trudged up the basement stairs, through the open doorway.
Then they both paused when they heard Lian laugh, lighter and higher pitched than the three boys.
"It's his birthday, let them have fun," Jason rolled his eyes. He finished boxing up the birthday cake in the Tupperware containers and slid them into the fridge, shoving things aside to make room. "We should clean this out."
"Let's worry about it tomorrow," Roy suggested, clapping a hand on Jason's shoulder. "Join me for a shower?"
Jason raised a brow at his boyfriend, but he saw that Roy really was in need of a shower. He was covered in grease and dirt from whatever he was working on in the basement.
"Sure, let's say goodnight to the kids first," Jason nodded and the two headed for the stairs.
At the second story, they walked towards the front of the house to Damian's room. Jason knocked on the door before they entered.
Damian was sitting on his desk, and Jon was beside him on the desk chair. Colin and Lian were sprawled on the bed, laughing at something Jason was sure their over-tired brains found wildly funny.
"Sounds like you guys are having fun," Jason said, and that sent the kids into another fit of giggles.
"Okay, Jay and I are going up to bed, so you kids behave, alright?" Roy said, then looked at his daughter. "Don't stay up too late, Pumpkin."
"Daddy, I'm not a pumpkin," She huffed with a dramatic eyeroll. Jason barked out a laugh at that.
"Goodnight, guys," Jason said. All of the kids looked like they were trying to hold in laughter at something, Jason had no clue what. Not that he particularly wanted to know.
"Be good," Roy reiterated, and the two shut the door again and headed up the stairs.
"Jay, have you seen my phone?" Roy asked as he dug through the bed. He moved his pillows, looked under the things on the nightstand, but there was no phone in sight.
"Did you leave it in the lab?" Jason asked as he picked up Roy's jeans to feel in the pockets.
"Could you go check for me?" He pleaded, with his big, stupidly hypnotizing eyes. "I'll look in the office to see if it's there."
"Sure," Jason sighed, tossing the jeans into the laundry basket and heading out of their room towards the stairs.
After they had gotten out of the shower, the house was quieter. Jason heard occasional giggles, but it sounded like they were calming down the later it got.
So he quietly snuck past the bedrooms on the second floor and tried to avoid the creaky steps on the stairs.
When he got down to the first floor, he paused.
The lights were off, but it looked like someone was hosting a seance with the amount of candles littered over every surface. And it smelled like a perfume store because of it.
He turned to look towards the kitchen and saw the four kids standing in the dining room, in front of the table. The floor in front of them was covered in rise petals, delicately laid out in the shape of a heart.
Each kid had a hand drawn sign, all in their own little scrawl and decorated themselves, spelling out 'will you marry me?'
He whipped around when he heard the stairs creak, and he saw Roy coming down the stairs, approaching him slowly with a sheepish grin.
"Roy, what is all this?" Jason asked, almost breathless as his heart started racing.
"Well, I asked them to help me with something," Roy said, clearing his throat. "Um, I'm not so great with words. But four years ago, we got to know each other better, and in that time I've seen you be an amazing partner, and incredible dad to our kids. You're my best friend, and I love you, and I want to spend the rest of my life with you, and our family."
Jason dared to look over his shoulder to see what Damian's face looked like. He wanted to say yes, but only if Damian was okay with it.
The kid was holding the sign that said 'marry', in his neat cursive writing and red marker, artistic little roses and vines drawn as the border. It looked like he worked hard on it.
He caught Jason's eye, and he nodded.
"Say yes, JayJay!" Lian exclaimed, much less subtle with her sign that said 'Me?' In bubbly, purple letters that were slightly crooked.
"Jay?" Roy asked, and Jason turned back to him to see him on one knee, patiently waiting.
"Yes," Jason nodded, and before the word had even fully left his mouth, Roy was surging to his feet and pulling Jason in for a bruising kiss.
It didn't last long, because the kids started cheering and running at them to throw their arms around the couple in a group hug.
"Hey, I thought you guys went to bed," Jason said when he noticed Damian and Lian sneaking down the stairs.
Jason was currently in the process of blowing out every candle on the first floor without setting off the smoke alarms while Roy cleaned up the rose petals so they didn't get ground into the rug or eaten by a cat.
"We wanted to say goodnight again," Lian said, running over to hug Lason around the middle, nuzzling her head into his chest.
He watched over her head as Damian knelt down beside Roy and threw his arms around him, mumbling something that Jason couldn't hear. He could have cried at that, seeing Damian so comfortable with Roy.
"I'm glad you're going to be my new dad, Jayjay," Lian said, staring up at him with her big, dark eyes.
"I am too, sweetheart," he said, leaning down to kiss her forehead.
"Does your old dad get a hug too?" Roy asked as he stood up, depositing the rose petals on the table.
Lian laughed and ran over to him as Damian strode over to Jason, wrapping him in a hug.
"How long did you know?" Jason asked, leaning his chin against the top of Damian's head.
"Roy asked me a month ago if he could ask for your hand in marriage," Damian said. "He came up with this plan a week ago."
"He asked you?" Jason asked, leaning back to look at Damian's face. The teen nodded.
"He makes you happy, Ahki," Damian shrugged. "I want you to be happy. And I love him too."
Jason pulled Damian in for another hug, squeezing him tightly.
"Happy birthday, again," Jason said, glancing at the clock on the stove. It was past midnight, but still. "I love you."
"I love you too, Ahki," Damian said, stretching up to give Jason a kiss on the cheek in a rare show of affection in his teenage years.
"Alright, it's a bit late for you guys to be up," Roy finally said. "Go on, get your butts to bed."
"Goodnight Daddy. Goodnight Jayjay," Lian said, waving at both of them before heading for the stairs.
"Good night," Damian said, giving Jason one last squeeze before he followed Lian to the stairs.
Jason tucked the four pieces of paper into his drawer, making sure there was nothing that would mess them up before shutting it. The kids worked hard on them, and he wanted to keep them.
"So you were surprised?" Roy asked as he climbed into bed.
"Yeah, I was," Jason nodded, sitting down beside him. "I'm also surprised Lian managed to keep it a secret for so long."
"Me too, she's usually a blabber mouth," Roy chuckled. "She was so excited when I talked to her about it, I thought for sure she would have let the cat out of the bag way before tonight."
"And you talked to Damian too?"
"Of course," Roy shrugged. "Jay, I know that Damian is the most important person in your life. Just like Lian is mine. I wanted to make sure they were okay with it before I asked you."
"What did he say?"
"Some things that are just between me and him," Roy explained. "But also that he'd be happy to have me as another big brother, and that he's never seen you happier. And that if I ever hurt you he'd sever my head from my shoulders."
"That brat-"
"No, Jay, it's fine," Roy laughed while Jason's face burned. "Trust me, I wouldn't have expected any less. He's a good kid, he's just protective of you."
"Thank you," Jason said after a moment, leaning against Roy's shoulder. They adjusted until he was cuddled against Roy's chest, leg and arm sprawled over his fiancé.
Fiancé. That was a fun new word.
"For what, Jaybird?"
"For accepting Damian as he is," Jason admitted. "Since we left the league, he's struggled. Even though he's gotten better over the years, people have really struggled to understand him, teachers, other kids, even our family. And you've never treated him like he was strange or weird or wrong."
"More than that Jay, I love who he is," Roy said, running a hand down Jason's back.
"I love Lian too," Jason said.
"I think she loves you more than me," Roy laughed, and Jason gave his arm a soft smack. "Hey."
"Hm?"
"I also love you," Roy said, and Jason tilted his head to look at him. "And I'm so excited to spend forever here."
"Love you too," Jason whispered, leaning up for another kiss.
