Work Text:
Nova remembers being forced to wear long pants some time ago. Sometimes because it was cold or the weather was bad in other ways, sometimes to look presentable, sometimes for protection, and sometimes just because an authority figure said so. And even as Nova understood the importance of some of them, he still often found it hard to find pants in his size. Either they were too long in the legs but a decent size in the waist, or the legs were the right length but the waist would either threaten to cut him in half or fall down if he didn't get the right belt.
To say nothing of those who tried to insist on him shaving his legs or anything else. It was just hair; biologically, the differences between it and the hair on people's heads were negligible at best. And yet, for some people, it was so bothersome that they expected Nova to take an untold amount of hours each week to take a razor to it all and risk shaving cuts - far more annoying than any amount of body hair - just so those people wouldn't have to see hair where it allegedly didn't belong.
Even back then, Nova wondered: who were these restrictions meant to benefit? Protection from weather or around machinery was one thing, but looking presentable... according to whose standards, exactly? How many people even looked that closely at his legs on a regular basis?
When Nova received his PhD and started teaching, he did an experiment. Every now and then, he would show up to class in shorts, and see if the students said anything. While they did give feedback on various things, nobody cared about his clothes or hair.
They cared even less when he became a DJ. Being in a dark club with loud music and dancing crowds rarely makes anyone care that much about what the DJ is wearing, after all. Maybe some of them thought it was a little silly for him to wear shorts when his upper body was mostly covered, but the shorts in and of themselves were not the problem.
And they never will be, according to Nova. Even Tatiana seems to have an understanding of this; amongst her top five megastars, only Yinu wears long pants on a regular basis. Eve regularly dresses in a way that leaves little to the imagination, 1010's clothes may or may not actually be part of their bodies, Neon J doesn't even bother with pants most of the time, and Sayu literally can't wear pants (unless her creators give her a leg option someday).
The point is, all of them are talented at what they do, and if anyone writes them off purely because they don't dress formally enough for that person's tastes - if that is all it takes to invalidate the things Nova and the NSR artists have done - it's that person's problem.
DJ Subatomic Supernova is many things: a PhD graduate, a professor, a DJ, charter of Cast Tech, a regular on the EDM charts, and the eventual avatar of Earth and its music. In the end, only the grand scheme of the universe can tell him what to do.
And somehow, he has a feeling that the universe doesn't care if he dresses to be comfortable, or if his legs are slightly hairier than expected.
