Work Text:
Kirigiri Kyoko is an enigma of mystery, Toko thinks.
This entire game, she’s been silent, distant and she’s thrown others under the bus for her own benefit in order to survive. She can’t blame her, she’d do the same if she wasn’t useless. But still, this new choice intrigued her. Instead of defeating Junko, going with the others and rebuilding herself with the Future Foundation, Kyoko had tailed Toko. Had followed her all the way from Hope’s Peak Academy to Towa City. At least, that’s where Kyoko said they were close to, Toko wasn’t listening and she wasn’t really good at geography either. She had to wonder why Kyoko had come with her though. During the game, she’d noticed that the detective had attached herself to Makoto, at least she thought she had, so it's really confusing why she didn’t go with him.
(And besides, Makoto’s better than ugly old her anyway. She swore they were together with how much the lavenderette was around him, too.)
As they make their way through rubble and debris, Toko bristles as Kyoko seems to pick on why she’s so silent. The two share a brief look while Kyoko helps her over an old railing, before talking as they walk down the main road towards where civilization had once thrived.
(Thrived is a strong word, Toko says when she mentions it. It’s a fun topic of debate.)
“You seem nervous around me.” Kyoko says that day, glancing about their surroundings as she carries a heavy-ish backpack over their shoulder. Toko bristles immediately, defensive, before seeing Kyoko raise a hand, “You can’t keep denying there’s not something wrong with how we behave around each other.”
“So this is my- my fault?”
“Ah, ah.” The sleuth tuts immediately, “No. I did not say that. You must be wondering why I came with you instead of Naegi, yes?”
(This person is a damn psychic. Did Maizono teach her?)
“...maybe. You don’t have to a- answer me anyway, I’m just stupid, I-”
“Fukawa.”
The tone shuts her up, and somewhere in her headspace she can hear Jack laughing. Toko focuses on Kyoko as the sleuth turns to her properly and makes eye contact that Toko loathes to adore when Kyoko isn’t paying direct attention to anything. They take a breath, then adjust the ever-falling bag on their shoulder.
“I came with you because I really don’t put up with Makoto’s.. well, blandness. You’re more fascinating. Besides, I used him for most of the game and threw him under the bus.” She explains, “Now, call me harsh but I’d much rather understand someone else than some boy who’s developing feelings for me that I cannot return. It would crush him to know I like women. Do you understand?”
(She’s just like me…)
“Yeah- yeah.” Toko stammers out, and then they keep going.
-
Toko spends the next few days reflecting.
Why did she feel so strongly about Kyoko’s opinion about her? Why would she like to be in that situation, able to like women freely? Able to put men - Byakuya - down? Or was she just projecting about wanting power again? She sighs in the tiny space of the two bedroom apartment they found. Mostly unharmed, and Jack had helped Kyoko move some of the bodies so that they could live in peace without Toko’s body fainting. Kyoko even figured out the electricity. She looks towards Kyoko’s door with the broken lock and the scratch marks, imagining what she’s doing in there. Probably trying to get something up and running. That girl was always forever working. Toko’s almost jealous, scribbling down things in a notepad Kyoko had gifted her from the bookstore a few miles back.
Why.. did she hold Byakuya to that standard, anyway? Was it comphet? Oh, that’d be horribly embarrassing. So of course that was the reason. Honestly, she’s so deep in her thoughts that she doesn’t notice Kyoko placing tea in front of her. She snaps her head up and they shrug apologetically, though their face never changes.
Then Toko just blurts it out.
“Did you stay with me for the same r- reason as Makoto?” She says.
Kyoko blinks, then closes her eyes politely, “Elaborate.”
“We- Well you always clung to his um.. his side, and then you almost got him k- killed..” Toko trails off as she sees a slight drop in the detective’s face.
“Ah.. you think I’m going to leave you to die like him.”
The silence speaks louder than if Toko had yelled. Kyoko is hurt, Toko can tell, and Kyoko slowly stands.
“Wait- I didn’t mean-” She starts, and even surprises herself by the way she grabs Kyoko’s gloved hand, garnering her attention back on her. “W- Wait. Please. Just be h- honest. Were you going to do that?”
She studies her face harshly, watching Kyoko stare at her with intensity. Slowly, the sleuth grips her hand back and sits back down, gaze growing softer, “No,” She hushes, “Never to you.” She promises. Toko whines, flustered, before slowly settling.
“What’re you..”
“Fukawa, I think I’m in love with you.”
(...)
“What?” Toko breathes, “But, I’m so u- unlovable, and that not even m- mention the s-s- system stuff, I-”
Kyoko hums softly, and Toko wonders why her skin is so smooth and not riddled with acne like her own. She looks up to the sleuth, and the sleuth is staring at her lips. Just a little more and..
They’re kissing.
It’s fireworks.
Toko grins to herself as Kyoko pulls away, a blush littering her neutral face. The writer wants to write so many stories about her, for her, that it hurts.
“Oh my god, I’m a lesbian.”
“You weren’t figuring it out, I was getting impatient.” Kyoko admits, then her eyelids flutter for a moment, “Would you.. like to do it again?”
The writer grins, beams even as she grips Kyoko’s shoulders, “W- Will you get mad if I’m awkward?”
“I’ll get mad if you just sit there.”
Toko nods, then connects their lips again.
(Kirigiri Kyoko remains an enigma of mystery. But one I’d like to solve.)
