Soulmate... It was easy, or almost easy, to find your soulmate. At sixteen, one's first name was inscribed on your left wrist. Simple and effective. If, of course, the first name was relatively rare. If it wasn't, you could spend your life looking for your soulmate and never find them.
There were also cases where no name was written. If your soulmate was dead or not yet born.
Shanks had been in the latter case. He had to wait until he was twenty to see a first name inscribed on his wrist.
Luffy.
But when you were a pirate, the rarity of the first name was more of a threat than a blessing.
When he met his young soulmate, Shanks chose to get rid of the name on his left wrist for good. It was a small sacrifice, but one he was happy to make to protect Luffy.
