Chapter Text
if someone were to ask miles how he felt about all these missions and villains he’s been dealing with, he’d say the same thing pavitr always does: well, that was another easy adventure for spider-man!
because it is, right? all these villains are the same, just slight differentiations here and there based on their own universe. shouldn’t be all that difficult to deal with!
but, uh. miles forgot about something.
he can’t have shit .
“ fuck! ”
miles quickly swings out of the way, flipping over the rhino that he was currently trying to contain. he had miscalculated the rhino’s next attack, and just narrowly avoided getting impaled by its horn.
this is nothing . miles totally has this! it’s in his own universe – although the rhino was not his own. he didn’t really care to know what universe it came from, just wanting to be able to secure it and send it back to hq as soon as he can.
did miles mention that he’s doing this all on his own?
yup. he’s on this mission by himself. a solo mission, if you will.
now, if you ask him if he got permission from miguel…
(why would he for his own universe? that seems rather ridiculous, in his opinion).
“gotcha!” miles cheers as he lands a kick onto the rhino, it being the last blow for the overexerted villain. he watches as the rhino falls on its side, groaning at all the wounds that miles managed to get on him. “now, let’s see…”
miles hums to himself happily as he taps on his watch, and he grins as the red webs appear around the rhino, securely containing him.
another easy adventure for spider-man!
miles turns when he hears a portal opening, and he grins when he sees jess and hobie come through. “hey, guys!”
“hey. nice work, kid,” jess hums, inspecting the damage done. “you got him down pretty quick, too. i’m impressed.”
“aw, shit, it was nothing,” miles waves off. he accepts the one armed hug that hobie gives him, saying, “what’re you doin’ here?”
“technically, supposed to help jess here, but i figured i’d rather stay with my fave li’l spider,” hobie muses, flashing jess a cheeky grin.
jess rolls her eyes good-naturedly at hobie’s antics. “yeah, totally, hobie, i can definitely take this back on my own for you. thanks for asking!”
“c’mon, jess, you love us,” miles insists, batting his eyelashes dramatically.
“and everyday i wonder why,” jess deadpans. “don’t be too long, you two. miguel’s gonna expect a report soon from you, miles.”
miles gives jess a small salute, watching as she goes through the portal with the contained rhino. once the portal closes up behind her, miles turns back to hobie, dramatically placing his hands on his hips. “now, how is it possible that i replaced pav as your fave?!”
“nah, pavi’s always number one in my heart,” hobie chuckles. “you’re just number one after him.”
“fair enough.” miles shrugs. “how’s it going with the others? sorry i haven’t been by in a while. school’s been kicking my ass.”
danger.
“you’re all good, mate.” hobie waves off. “you missed mayday’s new word of the month.”
“ dude ,” miles groans, throwing his arms up in the air. “i need school to let up , bro.”
danger. familiar. familiar? hide.
“she managed to say some garbled version of anarchy,” hobie says with a proud smirk, and miles cackles, already imagining the incredulous expression that peter b. probably had. “it sounded like an ‘amah-bee’, but i’ll take it.”
“as she should,” miles agrees with a nod. ( why is the hair on the back of his neck suddenly raising up? ) “what about you, and pav and gwen?”
“mate, you do not want to see the shit that gwen tries to get us to eat,” hobie grumbles. “gwendy tried ta feed us green bean casserole . pav looked like she just shot his auntie or somethin’, the li’l shit.”
“bro, she might as well have,” miles snickers. “i already told you about the whole thing about when she first met my parents, right?”
danger! hide, hide! hidehidehidehide–
hobie cocks his head to the side curiously, raising an eyebrow. “no, can’t say you have, love. what’d she do to the mister and missus?”
“she called em by their first names .”
“ no .”
“ and called my dad jeff! not even jefferson!”
“no fuckin’ way ,” hobie gapes in disbelief. “wh– you’ve got to be fuckin’ wit’ me, kid!”
DANGER. BEHIND. INCOMING.
miles shudders as his spidey-sense gets louder, and he notices hobie frown as well, possibly feeling that something’s amiss. “n-nah, i’m not. couldn’t lie about that shit if i wanted to.”
hobie hums with amusement, but his eyes begin to flicker around their surroundings, trying to figure out – “you feel it, too?”
“i do,” miles sighs, also beginning to look around. “i can’t figure out who it could possibly be, though…”
DANGER.
“ah? why would you be able to?”
INCOMING. CLOSE. RUN. HIDE.
“my senses are saying it’s familiar, so it has to be one i’ve encountered before…”
KILLED. RUN. DANGER. DANGERDANGERDANGER. HIDE.
“not a repeater,” hobie groans, cracking his neck. “aight, let’s find out which fucker it is.”
but miles stays rooted to his spot, eyes slowly widening in realization.
RUNRUN IT KILLED HIDE HIDERUN
“miles?”
HIDEHIDEHIDEHIDEHIDE
“hey, hobie… hypothetical question.”
“oh no.”
FOUGHTITBEFOREITSBACKITSBACKITSBACK
“has, uh… has any spider-person ever, erm. dealt with a villain that had already died?”
hobie tilts his head in thought. “mm, i remember it happening a couple times, but it’s not super often. why?”
HIDEHIDEHIDEHIDEHIDEHIDEHIDEHIDEHIDE IT KILLED PETER HIDEHIDEHIDE
“i. i think i know who it is–”
IT KILLED PETER IT'S BACK HIDEHIDEHIDEHIDEHIDE IT’S COMING FOR YOU NEXT–
RUN!!
miles and hobie both dive to opposite parts of the top of the building as something lunges for them, crashing down onto the spot they were once in. miles groans as he gets up, steadying himself before looking up to see–
it’s the green goblin.
miles was crouching behind a few boxes, staring wide-eyed as the green goblin and spider-man fought down below. he had only just gained his powers not even a whole two days prior, and this stranger spider-sense-thing was screaming at him the whole time.
it’s the green goblin and spider-man fight, and miles accidentally found his way onto the middle of it, and his peter had to save him and get him out of there.
“miles?”
there was spiderman, fighting the green goblin still as soon as he had put miles somewhere safe, reassuring him that he would teach miles all the ins and outs of being spider-man.
spider-man, who got forcibly thrown by the impact of the collider, laying severely wounded on the ground, while the green goblin also began to roar at its own injuries.
“miles – hey, kid–”
spider-man, who got his head smashed in by kingpin, much to miles’s absolute horror.
kingpin, who heard his gasp and immediately sent the green goblin after miles – and sent the prowler – uncle aaron–
“miles, look out!”
miles barely manages to sling himself away as the green goblin lunges towards him, but he finds himself stumbling and falling to his knees. he tugs off his mask, heaving and coughing and gasping desperately for air.
he can’t breathe, he can’t do this – he can’t fight the green goblin, he can’t – his vision’s spinning, everything’s so loud, he can hear hobie yelling into his watch–
“hey, love, you’re gonna hafta stay with me, yeah?”
miles’s head jerks up, staring wide and wild eyed at hobie, who has his hands up placatingly. his mask is still off, and miles can see the occasional scrapes all over him. “h-hobie–”
“you’re good, kid, i gotchu,” hobie mumbles, keeping an eye out for the green goblin. miles blinks slowly – who was fighting it? he turns his head to see a blue of blue and red, and hobie adds, “i asked for back-up, explained that it was a dead one back to life. miguel’s taking care of it.”
“h-hobie,” miles gasps out, scrambling to grip onto hobie’s arms tightly. the sounds of miguel fighting the green goblin behind him feel muted, but somehow, still much too loud. his spidey-sense is still going absolutely ballistic in his mind. “hobie, can’t – i can’t f-fight it– he–”
“ain’t no one said you gotta fight it,” hobie scolds lightly. “didn’t i just say the weird vampire spider’s takin’ care of it? you’re safe here with me, promise.”
“ arañita,” miles hears miguel breathe, and he turns to see miguel suddenly next to them, mask off to reveal a look of concern on his face. “ ¿qué tal? hobie said this is one that was dead?”
“he– he killed m-my peter,” miles whispers hoarsely, still shaking. “he– him and kingpin– i saw it–”
“whoa, whoa, back up, li’l dude,” hobie says, shaking his head as he makes a time-out sign. “what the bloody fuck do you mean you saw it .”
“i was tryna – tryna figure out powers and – i saw them f-fighting and–” miles takes a big, shuddering gulp of air before he continues, “and p-peter saved me ‘cause i accidentally got in the middle of it, and i s-saw the green goblin just – put peter up to the collider and – and then kingpin smashed his head in–”
“ ay, dios mío… ”
“and then – then kingpin found me and then he sent – he sent uncle aaron – the prowler – and the green goblin after me, b-but the green goblin died pretty quickly after ‘c-cause it was so wounded–”
miles jerks back in surprise when miguel lets out a low growl, deep within his chest, and watches as he turns and lunges back towards the green goblin, who no longer seems dazed from – whatever miguel had done.
“hey now, love, need ya to keep lookin’ at me, okay?” hobie says, patting miles’s cheek gently. “don’t worry ‘bout whatever that old man is doin’. just need ya to focus on bein’ grounded.”
“you’re not mi mamí ,” miles mumbles weakly.
“you know what i meant, you li’l shit,” hobie snorts. “you’re okay, miles. you ain’t ever gonna hafta worry ‘bout this stupid green goblin again, aight?”
miles nods, and jolts when he hears a roar behind them. instantly worried about miguel (that’s something to unpack later!), he whirls his head around, eyes wide as he tries to take in the scene.
miguel’s landing multiple blows onto the green goblin, both through punches and kicks, and with his claws as well. his eyes are glowing a brighter red than normal, and miles can hear him yelling–
“ ¿cómo te atreves a lastimar a mi arañita? ” miguel growls out, slashing at the green goblin’s side with his talons. “ ay, ya cabrón , i’ll make you regret this–” another slash to the green goblin’s other side, and miles watches in horrified awe at all the blood pooling from the green goblin’s wounds. “– no one harms those kids–”
“ay, kiddo, now might be a good time to look away,” hobie says, gently turning miles’s head back towards him. carefully, he pulls miles close, letting him tuck his head under hobie’s chin. “just stay here, and listen to my heartbeat, aight? i’m not tryna deal with a dead miles. pavi and gwendy will kill me, even if it ain’t my fault.”
miles chokes out a laugh, but does as he’s told, burrowing his face against hobie’s chest. hobie’s arms are comforting around him, the warm embrace making him slowly, slowly, calm down.
hobie hums to miles softly, making up something on the spot – but the gesture is so nice and familiar, reminding him of when mamí used to hold him tight when he had a nightmare, humming to him to lull him back to sleep. miles grips the back of hobie’s jacket a little tighter, and he feels the small vibrations of hobie’s barely-there chuckles.
miles doesn’t know how much time has passed, but he definitely jerks in surprise when a hand comes down to rest gently on miles’s shoulder. he looks up to see miguel, blinking in shock and worry at the blood splatters on his face, at the way parts of his suit was glitching due to the hits that landed on him. “ ... tío… ”
“are you okay, ¿nene ?” miguel whispers, eyes still flaring brightly. miles notices the blood around his lips, and he knew that, at minimum, miguel had paralyzed the green goblin with his fangs. “ ¿estás herido? por favor, dime que no estás herido. ”
“ e-estoy bien ,” miles whispers. “are– are you–?”
“do not worry about me, arañita ,” miguel says softly yet firmly. “i am – very sorry, that you had to deal with that. both your… origin, as a spider-man, and the fact that the green goblin came back.”
“it’s not – not your fault, tío ,” miles says, shaking his head. “i… uh. thanks. thanks, uh, for coming to help.”
“of course.”
“miguel here is beginnin’ to acknowledge his soft side,” hobie snickers teasingly, flashing miguel a smirk. “heard how he called us the kids? he cares for us.”
“i told you you’d come ‘round to us, tío ,” miles chuckles weakly. “we’re just the best.”
“you two are going to be my least favorites,” miguel deadpans, but miles can tell that he’s resisting the urge to smile. “come. we must get to the medbay.”
“but–?!”
“you may not have been severely wounded by this encounter,” miguel says, tapping his watch to pull up a portal, “but hobie has gotten some scratches on him. and you dealt with the rhino before this. and a panic attack. and dissociation. need i add more?”
“i can’t have fuckin’ shit , bro,” miles groans, throwing his head back and grumbling when hobie picks him up, snickering the whole time. “ tío , how could you do this to me.”
miguel allows for a small smirk to appear on his face as hobie steps through the portal with miles, looking back to see the incapacitated green goblin behind him. he studies it momentarily, assessing that it wasn’t breathing, and nods to himself, sending out a message to lyla to get someone to remove it before he steps through the portal himself.
no one gets to hurt those kids. not on his watch.
