Chapter Text
I pull up at the base, my motorbike that used to be Miss Pauling's sounds like it's had better days... I'm afraid it will explode any second now.. I hop off the bike and remove my bulky helmet that makes my head look twice as big.
"Ey! Miss... uhh....-" Scout has his body leaning against the wall, stumbling over his words as it seems he never bothered to remember my name.. How charming.
"L/n, Miss L/n." I say in a monotone voice, waiting for his ass to move already. He's not moving.
"Oh yeah!! I-I knew that.. *Anyway*, I was wonderin' if you wanna go out sometime-" Without warning, I shove Scout out of the way and enter the base.
"You haven't even known me for TWO DAYS, Scout. Give me a break..." I groan, obviously not interested in whatever Scout wants to say. He finally shuts up after not coming up with some shitty flirtatious response.
“Aye lad, she’ll be head over heels, and yer’ luck will make it EVEN better for you to get laid!” I hear Demo yell out, patting the Medic’s back. They both seem to be talking about something weird that I’m not interested in…
“Demo… Please be quiet, also- Wait… GET LAID??” Medic raises his voice at Demo, catching my attention once again. They both look at me with wide eyes as I walk past them with a concerned expression. Demo whispers something I can’t understand, and gets hit in the shoulder by Medic’s elbow.
“Weird…” I try to shrug it off, but some questions remain in my head. What “luck”? Who is Medic after? And why are they being so secretive about it??
“Okay boys, so the Administrator has asked me to supervise all of you on the battlefield since your performance has been… “Outright disgraceful and shameful”, according to the Administrator herself.” I sigh, reading from my clipboard. I can hear her voice booming from the speakers, and the battle will start any second now. The boys whisper among themselves rumours and insults about my boss, assuming I can’t hear them…
“Oi!! Listen up you fucks!!” I yell, gripping my clipboard a little harder. I got their attention now…! I proceed to explain how I will watch over them and assess each individual on their skills and flaws.
“Good luck out there, and go kill BLU team.” I say before the Administrator starts the countdown. I step out of the way, almost getting trampled by the mercenaries charging out of respawn.
“LET’S GO MAGGOTS, FOR AMERICA!” Soldier screams, rocket-jumping off to the distance and market-gardening a helpless BLU Medic
“Damn, someone is in a good mood.” Engineer speaks to himself, setting up a nearby sentry nest. As the battle ensues, I watch each merc closely at their strategy, technique, and critical thinking. Everyone seems to be doing pretty well, just going all out on their blood-killing spree… But I notice one man is lacking in the field: The Medic, who is constantly losing focus and running left and right to look for someone to heal. He keeps taking glances at me while tripping MULTIPLE times on his own feet, it’s surprising he hasn’t been shot by a Sniper already…
“Medic! Eyes on the target!! Pretend I’m not here!” I call out, instantly regretting it as he loses focus again and gets himself blown up by the BLU Demoman. Now I can see why the Administrator is so upset… I pinch the bridge of my nose ad I watch Medic run back to his teammates. He looks totally out of it….
“Hudda hudda ha?” Pyro muffles, putting their hand on my shoulder. I didn’t notice so I jump and turn back to see them.
“S-Sorry, didn’t see ya’ there. Yeah.. Do you know why?” I bite the inside of my mouth, genuinely concerned for the Medic. When I ask Pyro, they fall silent and put their hands behind their back.
“Ah… you know what? It’s fine, it doesn’t matter.” I shoo Pyro away, they need to go fight anyways.. Pyro runs off to go kill a couple BLU’s. A few hours later, and things are looking… Dreadful. RED team has been totally dominated and can’t even leave spawn because the BLU Engineer placed his sentries left, right and centre. All of the BLU team waits impatiently for a sign of the RED team to come out of their hidey-hole.
“For fucks sake… Anyone!? Anyone going to do something?? You ALL are going to admit defeat here!?” I snap my fingers to get their attention, and raise my voice even louder.
“Miss, I don’t know if you know… But it’s impossible to even LEAVE respawn… How do you expect us to handle this?” Engineer takes off his helmet and wipes his forehead, trying to calm himself down but I can tell he’s annoyed at my persistence.
“How about-“ My sentence is cut off by the Administrators loud, lifeless voice.
“YOU FAILED!!” She sternly reminds us, while BLU team cheers.
“You. Are. Terrible!!” The BLU Scout sticks his middle finger at all 10 of us. All the RED team try their best to hold back their pent-up rage. But fail miserably.
“Ach, what happened to that “luck” you were talking about, Demo!?” Medic turns to Demoman, gritting his teeth.
“Ey, don’t look at me!! It’s not MY fault yer’ eyes can’t move away from-“ Demo gets shushed by Medic and a gloved hand to his mouth. He nods slowly and gulps, looking away from me.
“……. Okay guys, back to base. And, I will visit all of you individually to show your results on today’s battle.” I start walking back, taking one last look at Demo and Medic, who are now facing away from each other and talking about someone.
It’s been about 4 hours of speaking to eight of the nine men, and they all made it seem like I was the crazy girl, and not that they LOST the bloody battle AND got dominated. I’m feeling like absolute crap and I’m walking my way to the Medbay to speak to Medic, hopefully, that’s where he is..
Knock knock! “Medic, you in here? I have your results from today’s battle, and I have a bone to pick with you..” I face-palm at the joke I accidentally made. Removing my hand when I realise he’s looming over me… Covered in blood and guts.
“Miss L/n..! Uhmm… C-Come in! Come in!” He holds the door open, and I get a whiff of decaying corpses... I give him a ‘seriously?’ look while I enter the Medbay, keeping my papers close to my chest. Medic rushes over to me, he seems jittery and frantic with his movements.. Is he scared of me, or his results?
“Okay… Give me a second…” I flip through the documents, finding Medic’s page and re-reading it over.
“Constantly looking away from targets and unable to run properly, died the most out of all mercenaries, ignored 4 patients and failed to dodge any and all projectiles. I’ve got to say… This is-“
“Horrible, I know..” Medic rubs his arm nervously, smearing more blood onto his already stained shirt dress.
“Hey, I’m not trying to put you down here, m’kay? But I need you to know I can’t let you off for this. There’s no punishment or anything like that, but I’m just saying… You need to get your shit together. Okay?” I give Medic a reassuring smile, trying to sound stern but not threatening.
“Y-Yes ma’am L/n!” Medic nods his head, seemingly even more nervous about letting me down.
“Medic, I’m not going to kill you… We’re friends. Just call me Y/n.” My smile turns a little more friendly as I take one of his bloody hands, my mood is brightening. Finally, someone is listening to me and actually respects me..!
“A-Ah… Yes y/n..!” Medic looks like his brain has stopped working…. And is he… Is he blushing?
“Anyway..” I let go of his hand, dry blood now on the palm of my right hand. “I expect great things from you tomorrow, okay?” I turn away, heading out of the Medbay.
“Ja… I won’t let you down Y/n!” Medic now feels a little more confident in himself, now that someone as special as you has inspired him to try better. He waves at you before you close the door,
I flip through my papers, and everyone’s been checked..! I can return to the administrator with high hopes now.. I’m going to help the RED team as much as I can while Miss Paulings away..! But… Before I leave, I forgot to ask Medic something… I open the Medbay doors again, uninvited. Medic’s washing his bloody hands while humming something familiar…
“S-Sorry to pop in again, but I forgot to ask you something.” I approach Medic, he seems surprised that I came back. He dries his hands and holds them close to his chest.
“Yes? What is it?” He looks down at me, almost beaming with joy.
“Is it your birthday?" Medic seems shocked that I found out, and a faint blush can be seen across his face.
“Umm.. Ja. It is my birthday, aha..” He scratches the back of his head, he seems really happy now..
“But, how did you know? I don’t really tell anyone..” He leans closer to me, pushing his glasses up.
“Demo was talking about it when I was assessing him, he kept rambling about how you wanted to sing a Rammstein song for a girl-“ I’m shushed as I feel Medic’s hands pushing me out of the Medbay.
“Okay! Fun talk! C-Come back later!!” He slams the door shut, leaving me confused. Now the dots are connecting… He was humming Engel by Rammstein! And he wanted to sing it to some girl on his birthday! That’s… Kinda cute. I hold my papers with my left hand while I take out a couple of 20-dollar bills and slip them under his door as a birthday present for him. I leave the base, feeling a strange sense of positivity.
The moon glowed brightly as the stars shined over me, it sure was a good view.. I hop on my motorbike and put my helmet on, speeding off into the distance.
I wonder whom Medic wanted to sing to…
