the forest for the trees, a million little seas

Summary:

all sentibeings respond different to wielding the Peacock Miraculous. At least, emotionally.
In the end, that is what they are made of.
An emotion.

The peacock miraculous responds to them differently, too.

Work Text:

Felix always knew he had an odd, twisted connection to the ring.
Well, he guessed it. Somewhere deep inside his brain, it made sense, even back then when he had no clue about the secret to his own creation.

When his mother shared it with him, far away from the threat the man who called himself his father posed, it all made sense.
All the times there was a calling coming from within the very marrow of his bones, urging him to seize the ring.
He knew it would grant him some sort of control, even if he was unsure of what it would truly do.
When his mother shared it with him, far away from the threat the man who called himself his father posed, it all made sense.
All the times there was a calling coming from within the very marrow of his bones, urging him to seize the ring.
He knew it would grant him some sort of control, even if he was unsure of what it would truly do.

Born as Felix Fathom, had been a sentimonster. Created by the very essence of a magic element.
Implanted into a mother who had accepted her life as childless, by a father who wanted a heir so desperately he went ahead and created the future source of his own doom.

And he knew Gabriel Agreste wasn't too far from turning into something like Colt Fathom had. The shell of a man, if there had ever been one to begin with.
Someone who, knowingly or unknowingly, wholeheartedly believed a form of life could be inferior.

While there was no way of truly knowing what that could mean for his kind, he knew that the closer Gabriel was to becoming something like Colt was, the greater the risk it was for him.
For Adrien.

The story had to be told from both sides, and he knew it.

Felix was going to do whatever he had to to ensure he had not survived someone who thought he had less right to an autonomous existence based on the fact he could be controled, in vain.

Even if it meant negotiating his way out of it. Stealing his way out of it. Tricking his way out.

Betraying his way out.

Gabriel simply did not understand the power the jewel gave him. He thought he did, wielding it and creating life and destroying it with a snap of his fingers. Bending existence to his will, only to get to do it on a greater scale.

As soon as his fingers made contact with whatever magical material the Peacock Miraculous was made of, Felix could feel it.
The magic surging through his veins, like a lifeforce.
His very essence.

Felix had fought to get there, and won.
Survived.

And the brooch, well.
The brooch was golden.
The holder of a power attractive, yet deeply misunderstood. Both over and underappreciated.

He could see the beauty it held behind the glimmer.

From the moment Felix explained the story to her, Kagami knew this moment would come sooner or later.
The day where his effort alone was not enought to find their kind protected against selfish wishes.

Felix had found himself some allies. Planned intensely, as if his life depended on it.
Because it did. His life and hers and Adrien's, created and bent to will.

Ordered around and manipulated through means that would leave them no option but to obey.

Kagami knew what it meant very well.

Despite the occasional doubt Felix's plans aroused in her, she knew what had to be done.
She was strong. Trained to have an iron will, even if it was going to be molten into the brightest red a metal could offer the second it didn't align with her mother.
Educated to be serene, even if for the longest time she believed it meant emotionless.

How ironic.

A creature made from emotion, expected to be emotionless.

She and Felix had tried to determine what she had been made out of.
Adrien was first.
Love.
The undying love of a mother for her child, the flame that was ablaze with the hope and yearning to cradle an infant and love him

Felix was next.
Envy.
The yearning of a father for a son he could not have, only born along with someone else's baby.
The anger that came with seeing someone own what he couldn't, even if love did not mean ownership to them.

Somewhere along their investigation, she found the answer.

Tsurugi Kagami had been born from determination.
The determination to have a legacy, to be able to shape and mold and break and bend that legacy, until it was the perfect shape. The perfect shadow of a life lived.
A life, that, of course, had not been hers.

Out of the three of them, she concluded she was the one who exhibited her creation trait the most. Maybe because she had been made to, mind and actions carefully practiced so that they would show only what they had to.

As much as she sometimes dislike it, right then and there it was the best she could have asked for.

Kagami knew what had to be done. What was needed to protect her life and of two others.
While once it would have seemed like a waste to her, the determination she held was now directed at the importance of a life. A set of lives.
A set of lives doomed unimportant by their threat.

She couldn't quite describe the sensation of the material laying on her hand. It was oddly heavy for its size, both physically, and heavy with the weight she knew its power held.
The weight of the ability to create, bend and destroy a life, sitting peacefully on her hand.

The feathers of the brooch had taken a different appearance as soon as the magical item touched her fingers.
Despite still looking metallic, the detail on each one had become less angular that it did when Felix held it.
Despite its solid appearance, Kagami swore she could feel the soft strokes of fluffy feathers brushing against her hand.

“Adrien, if you want to wear it, if you want to keep it, take it. Felix doesn’t want it, and neither do I. If there is someone that can understand both the beauty and the cruelty of its power, it is you.”

“I don’t want it,” was his sole answer.
