Work Text:

Harry was sitting in the library trying to finish the last bit of summer work when Hermione came to check on him. “Hey Harry, do you have a minute?” Hermione waved her hand. “We got mail from Hogwarts.”

“Oh! Our book lists are here finally,” Harry perked up. “I wonder who our professor will be for Defense Against the Dark Arts.” Harry gave her a puzzled look when he realized that his envelope was thicker than usual, but he noticed that hers was too. “I see yours is thick like mine.”

“Yes, it is, isn’t it?” Hermione flipped it over several times, “It’s our Fifth year. Prefect badges?” Hermione’s face lit up at the possibility.

“Nah, I am not fit for Prefect,” Harry shook his head before his eyes widened at Hermione’s reaction.

“Harry James Potter! What did I say about talking bad about yourself?” Hermione tapped her foot.

“To never do it in front of you?” Harry ducked his head as she went to swipe at it.

“No, you blundering fool,” Hermione huffed, “I said to think POSITIVE! No Negativity!”

“Alright, Hermione,” Harry threw up his free hand, “Shall we open them and find out what’s new?”

“On the count of three,” Hermione brought the envelope up in ready mode, “1…2…3!”

They ripped their mail open and pulled out their contents, and felt something heavy. They looked at each other before tipping the paper to the side to let the heavyweight slip onto their palm. It was a Gryffindor Lion badge with a P smacked in the middle. Harry had a shocked look on his face, whereas Hermione was jumping up and down in excitement.

“YES! WE ARE PREFECTS TOGETHER!” Hermione shouted as she ran around the table to give Harry a big hug. “Congratulations, Harry!” She gave him a smack on the cheek, causing him to blush.

“Thank you, Hermione and congratulations to you, too,” Harry smiled and gave her another squeeze before kissing her cheek as well, but she turned her head at the last second, and he ended up kissing her soft lips.

They both froze at the feel of each other’s lips. They stared into the other’s eyes and saw something they hadn’t noticed before. Harry muttered, “Oh, for bloody sake,” Harry ran his hand into her hair and pulled her in for another kiss, which she readily accepted. They pulled away, blushing as the door slammed open.

“Hey, Harry and Hermione, what’s taking you?” Ron looked at them both. “Mom’s waiting for lunch.” Ron happened to notice their badges. “Oh, are you two our year’s prefects?” They nodded as they continued to stare at each other.

“Excellent news, mates!” Ron clapped them both on their shoulders, snapping them out of their revere.

“Thank you, Ronald,” Hermione smiled at him. “You’re not sore for not getting it?”

“Nah, Harry’s our house leader, even if he doesn’t realize that,” Ron waved her off. “Plus, I rather work behind the scenes and strategize.”

“Thanks, Ron,” Harry gave him a man-hug. “Let’s go tell your mom our good news.”

They grabbed their letters and went downstairs.
