Is our blood thicker than the water of the sea?

Summary:

A six year old Nya ran ahead, towards the dirt path around the house, leading the way to a forest and a pretty lake she likes to swim in.

She doesn't need to turn around to know her ten year old brother is already chasing after her.

She knows that no matter where she decides to go, her big brother will always follow after her.

Always.

Or: What if elemental powers were a bit more intertwined in inheritance.

Chapter Text

There is a certain point in grief where nothing really makes sense.

It didn't make sense to Kai anyway.

He blinked, staring numbly at the cluster of people gathered around the monastery. Family, friends, even strangers came to pay their respects and express gratitude for Nya and everything she did for the city and the people.

They came to Nya's memorial.

That didn't make sense to Kai.

She wasn't dead.

Why are they doing this?

Kai blinked again, and suddenly the ceremony was nearing it's end, Wu thanking everyone present for coming. The crowd slowly thinned out, leaving only a handful of people left.

He spotted his parents quietly taking to Wu and Misako on the side, all their faces tight and glossy eyed. Cole's dad hugging his only son as he shook mutely. Jay's parents barely a feet away from the pair, crushing their son as he cried, their faces tearful as well. Zane and Pixal stood close to Mr. Borg, all three with a very similar solemn expression, with Zane's looking particularly numb.

Lloyd was already back inside. Kai caught a glimpse of him as the people started leaving.

Kai didn't feel his legs moving. He didn't feel as he turned around towards the monastery, didn't feel his hands grasping the handle and opening the door.

Didn't feel his feet steadily hit the floor.

Didn't feel as his hand reached for the door to Lloyd's room.

Didn't feel as he opened them, looking right into Lloyd's puffy eyes and opening his arms wide in case he wanted a hug.

He didn't feel Lloyd barrel into his chest, he didn't feel as his smaller body shook with muffled sobs, didn't feel as the tears soaked the front of his gi. He didn't feel his own arms tightening around the younger ninja.

Kai didn't feel anything.

It was quiet.

Nowadays it wasn't a rare occurrence.

There was nothing to talk about. Not really. The ninja usually stayed in their own rooms, except for occasional meal every now and then.

Zane turned off his emotions very quickly, making himself as efficient as he could get. Kai couldn't even blame him.

Cole threw himself into as much responsibilities and tasks as humanly possible, basically taking care of all ninja activities, along with a stoic and cold Zane.

Jay and Lloyd rarely left their respective rooms. More often than not, Cole had to bring them food and remind them to shower. Sometime that task fell on Kai, when it got too much for Cole to handle.

Pixal was mostly the same as Cole, busing herself with a impossible amount of unfinished projects and solo missions. Kai found her in the garage in the middle of the night one time too many.

As for him?

Kai didn't feel anything.

He should be sad. Devastated. Angry. Livid. Hysterical. Some other adjective describing a person in mourning.

He should be feeling something.

But he doesn't.

Kai stalks the halls of the monastery, moving around like a ghost, unfeeling and detached.

He doesn't feel anything.

His dreams were filled with endless, nonsensical glimpses of blue.

There was so much blue in his eyes. Every night, without fail.

Kai looked around the infinite ocean. He floated aimlessly, lightly moving his arms along with the currents dancing around him.

He didn't fear it. He feels like he should be afraid.

But, why would he be afraid? Why fear something so magnificent and beautiful? Something so familiar and welcoming. Why would he fear his own family, his own home?

"Kai!"

The said man turned towards the joyful shout of his name. He let a carefree grin stretch across his face, waving back at the figured of his sister. She floated closer, the blue glow reflecting on the oceanic floor.

She reached out to him, her voice loud and impatient. "Come on brother! We have so much of the sea to explore!"

He shook his head, chuckling at the almost pouting face of his little sister. He reached out to take her hand, and let her drag him away just like when they were kids...

...were they ever kids?

He doesn't think so.

They were always with the ocean.

They were the children of the sea.

They were the sea.

There was only the sea.

He, was one with the sea.

His blue, glowing hand glimmered in tandem with the sunlight streaming through the surface. The translucent limb almost reached the identical one belonging to his sibling, when-

Kai's eyes snapped open.

He gaged, barely managing to run towards the bathroom and barricade himself inside. He bend over the toilet, throwing up whatever resided in his stomach. He squeezed his eyes shut at the unpleasant feeling of liquid leaving his throat.

The stomach acid didn't burn the way it always did.

When he felt like he was done, he tried to avoid looking at the disgusting stuff that just left his body-

Only to freeze in shock, as he caught a glimpse of completely clear water. The only thing indicating he threw up anything is the slightly higher level of water in the bowl.

Kai swallowed harshly, feeling more water then spit travel down his throat.

Oh, this is not good.

The sea was restless.

She missed something. That shouldn't be possible. Why would he miss anything, when the sea was all she ever needed? All she ever wanted?

But there was something. Missing.

She didn't like missing something.

She needed the ocean to be whole.

And She was missing something, so the ocean was missing something. The ocean was not whole.

That wouldn't do.

She swam, with a partially clear goal is mind.

Find what's missing. Bring it home to the sea. It must be lonely, without the sea.

She needs to fix that.

She ventured out to the depths.

Did a long time passed as she traveled? She can't tell. But it matters not.

She will find the one she's looking for.

But she needs help from the ocean.

She finally saw her, the oceanic glow identical to her own shining even in the deepest parts of the sea.

As she came closer, the other figure turned towards her, smiling. "What troubles you, my dear friend?" The voice echoed, wrapping around the waves.

The whole sea could tell something was missing.

They need a calling, for the lost soul of the sea.

They need to bring...him home.

Chapter 2

Summary:

People always told him he looked like he's about to spit fire when mad.

He heaves, bend over the sink as salty water rises to his throat.

Chapter Text

Kai walked through the silent monastery, carefully placing his footsteps on floorboards that he knew didn't creek. His heart pounded, his head hurt. The water rushed through the pipes hidden in walls all around him, louder than it should be.

It grated on his ears. Made his head spin.

He stumbled into the empty kitchen, weak legs barely supporting his weight.

Something is wrong.

Something is very, very wrong.

He gripped the counter for balance, gritting his teeth. The water in his guts is swaying with the movement of waves. He feels it reach out to something that can't be touched.

He's not meant for this.

He's always been fire. There's flames in his heart, magma boiling in his veins. His eyes are that of the darkest charcoal, turning red hot when his flames appear dancing around him. His breath is all ash and bellowing smoke.

People always told him he looked like he's about to spit fire when mad.

He heaves, bend over the sink as salty water rises to his throat.

Why is this happening?

Breathing heavily, Kai stares at the water, trying to will it away, trying to pretend this isn't happening.

Nothing is wrong.

It's just water.

He inhaled deeply, wiping his mouth and standing upright.

This is normal. Nothing is wrong.

He rolled his shoulders, ignoring the sounds of water all around him. He walked back to his room, fist clenched tight and eyes empty all the way.

Everything is fine.

Nothing like that happened again for a while. Life continued on.

Every day Kai wakes up, walks around the monastery, doing whatever chores need to be done at the moment, trying to get Lloyd and Jay to eat. Trying to get Cole and Pixal to take a break. Observing Zane for any signs of emotion. (He finds none. Kai can relate.)

He avoids his parents. Which is very shitty and completely unfair to them. He knows.

He just can't bring himself to care.

It's shitty and unfair too. He knows.

He's quietly washing the dishes in the kitchen one evening, with a radio turned on the lowest volume. His hands skillfully and quickly clean every plate and glass.

He can't seem to tear his eyes off the water leaving the sink faucet, the sensation of it running on his skin holding him stuck in a trance. His head is filled with the sound of running water, of waves crashing against each other, against rocks and boats and ships.

The dishes are done. The water keeps running. His hands are under the faucet.

Kai can't see the reason why he should stop it.

He stands there for a long while. Letting the water run over his hands, feeling very at peace. He wished he could be surrounded by water all the time.

Like a lake.

Or the sea-

A door banged open somewhere in the house, startling Kai out of his mindless task. He quickly shuts the water off, ignoring the slight pang of sadness in his chest at the lack of liquid on his skin.

This means nothing.

He wipes his hands on a rug, getting all the water off of them.

This is nothing.

He walks out of the kitchen, towards the rapid shouting and the sound of a door being slammed closed.

Ah. Right.

Cole walks away from Jay's room with a stormy expression, looking ready to either punch something or someone.

Kai hopes it's not him that's about to get slugged in the face.

Cole paused as he caught Kai walking over to him, smothering his surprised expression to something forcefully casual. "Oh. Hey." He shifted slightly, trying to avoid Kai's eyes.

That's another wierd thing going on. The others are being very... cautious with him lately. And Kai has no idea why. They act like he's about to either go on a murder spree or break like a particularly thin glass vase any day now.

He's done nothing to gain that reaction. Literally.

Kai tilted his head towards Jay's door, "What was that all about? Is everything okay?" He made special effort to make himself sound gentle. He doesn't want anyone to feel afraid to talk to him.

There's no reason to.

Is there?

Cole opened his mouth to answer, trying to form a sentence for a good couple of seconds when Jay's door flew open.

He looked at Cole and Kai with wild and angry eyes. "Is everything okay? Is everything okay?!" He exploded, apparently having overheard Cole and Kai talking.

Jay stomped closer, his expression worsening as he saw whatever face Kai had made. It was blank. "You asked if everything is okay?! How can you be so-"

"Jay!-" Cole yelled, trying and failing to hide the anger in his voice. Kai stood silently.

The water in the pipes is loud.

"-NO! I want to know why this-" Jay poked him harshly in the chest, "-bastard is acting like nothing happened!" He spat, his face red and livid.

Cole shook with barely held back anger. "DROP IT, Jay!"

Jay snapped his head back towards Kai. "YOUR SISTER IS DEAD! NOTHING IS OKAY!"

The silence was loud.

The water was louder.

Kai stared, his empty, dark eyes boring right into Jay's wide stormy blues. He seemed much more clear-eyed that a couple of seconds ago. There was a flicker of regret.

He should be mad. He knows, deep within his heart. He has every right to start shouting at the smaller ninja. He should. He should be livid.

But he isn't. And maybe that's worse.

Cole and Jay certainly thinks it is, judging by their almost identical wide eyed looks at Kai's lack of... anything. It would have been funny if the situation was any different.

And still.

Kai felt nothing.

And with nothing is his voice, he answered. "I know."

He walked away without a glance behind.

The sound of water soothes him. Consumes him. Fills his empty mind to the brim. It's overflowing with nothing but water

Kai felt nothing.

Lloyd hesitantly knocked on his door later that night.

He could tell it was Lloyd by the light footsteps of his smallest body. "Come in." His voice was dull. He didn't pick his head up from the pillow.

A blond head peeked from his doorway, before coming all the way in. His arms drowned in the still much too big hoodie he stole from Kai years ago.

He walked over, joining Kai on the bed. The green ninja didn't hesitate to lay down on his side, parallel to Kai, facing him. Lloyd blinked slowly, trying keep his eyes open.

It was late. He should be sleeping.

Kai was about to say exactly that, but Lloyd beat him to the punch. "Are- are you alright?" His voice wavered, from concern or grief or exhaustion. Kai can't tell.

He should probably answer.

The sound of rain hitting the window above their heads is deafening.

Kai longed to be a part of it.

Something inside him already is a part of it.

Always was.

 Is.

Will be.

Lloyd looks more and more worried with every second he stays silent.

"...I guess." He doesn't know what else to say. There's nothing else to say.

His answer doesn't seem to make Lloyd any less concerned. His eyes are wide and his brow is furrowed. He looks like he might be about to cry.

That makes Kai feel...not good.

Lloyd should not be sad. Especially not for Kai.

But Kai doesn't know how to fix that.

The rain is louder now.

Lloyd falls asleep tucked under his arm.

Kai doesn't fall asleep until the rain subsides.

He doesn't talk to Jay for a while.

Kai's not the one avoiding him. He has no real reason to. At least, he doesn't think so.

It is Jay who scurries out of view every time Kai comes near. He's always going out of his way to not get in Kai's path.

Is it out of fear?

Kai hopes not. The thought leaves a bitter taste in his mouth.

Is it out of remorse?

Possibly. He seems guilty, for some reason. Why? Did something happen? Kai doesn't remember. His brain feels like liquid, leaking out of his ears in the form of water.

He's swimming through an invisible ocean. His thoughts bleed out onto the waves. He's crashing against the rocky islands, breaking apart and rising once again in an infinite loop.

...What was he thinking about?

A distant call exhoes out from the sea.

It sounds like Nya.

She's calling him to come home.

Kai will.

Chapter Text

"You seem distracted."

Kai hummed. Zane's statement was dull.

Empty.

Cold.

The glaciers in the sea creaked.

"...Yeah." Thinking felt weird. He doesn't want to think much nowadays. He's tired.

Zane made no expression as he continued. "I advise for you to rest more. Your heart rate has increased in the last couple of weeks. Your blood pressure is higher than it should be." His voice washed over Kai, flowing through his head. He heard the words. He didn't hold onto them for long

...What were they talking about? He doesn't remember. Zane stared at him, his bright, icy blue eyes stoic but intense all the same. Is he expecting an answer? Kai should probably do that.

He thinks...?

Kai nodded his head. Probably the best course of action.

Zane doesn't talk much anymore, after all.

Neither does Kai.

His hands are busy washing the vegetables for Zane to use. The water ran over his hands. It was all he could focus on.

They stayed silent as they worked on dinner.

Kai felt nothing.

He stood in the shower, letting the water flow run free rein over his body.

There was a knock at the door. A murmur of impatience. He doesn't focus on it.

Kai doesn't know how long he's been here. Time stops and starts all over again every time a new droplet hits his skin. He can't hear anything besides the symphony of water rushing all around him, pooling on the floor tiles, the shower walls.

The knocking is insistent. A worried voice carries with it.

Water flows into his open eyes. He lets it blind him, turning his world into a blurry visage of shapes and colors.

A hand slammed on the bathroom door, much louder this time. Pixal's yelling followed immediately after. "Kai, if you don't answer me I'm getting Cole and breaking the door down!"

He startled. Turned off the water.

The silence made his ears ring.

He should answer.

"Just a minute."

He leaves the shower. He opens the door, walking past Pixal, ignoring the concerned expression on her pale, metallic face.

There is no reason for her to worry. Certainly not for him.

Existence continues on.

Kai feels nothing.

The rain rages on, soaking Kai to be bone as he's standing by the monastery's entrance.

The sound of uncountable amount of droplets filled his head. He heard nothing besides that.

His body is statue still, unwilling to leave the mesmerizing feeling of water making a home on his person. He has no need for the comfort of a warm and cozy inside of the house. His fire doesn't mind. The droplet within him thrives.

Kai let his head fall back, facing the dark, cloudy sky. His hair is soaked. It's no longer styled in spikes in an imitation of flames. It is loose, falling on his shoulders in layers, mimicking the subtle movement of waves in the sea.

His eyes fill with water. It's salty. But it is not tears.

He doesn't flinch as a wide hand falls on his shoulder. Kai turns his head to face the newcomer, finding Cole anxiously looking at him, his mouth moving as if he's speaking. Kai doesn't hear anything.

The hand guides him inside. Kai mourns. He does not want to leave. Let him soak in the only thing that matters. Let him be one with it.

Why are they doing this to him?

There's another, identical hand on his other shoulder, gently guiding him up on the wooden porch, past the entry doors. His ears stop ringing. Cole's voice is clear. He sounds sad. He sounds like he understands.

He does not.

"-it's alright, I know, I know it's been hard for you-" Cole murmured, right next to Kai's head.

Kai looked around. He didn't notice they both already sat down on the living room couch, away from the rain. He looks over at Cole. He knows his expression is blank, eyes filled with water. They are not tears.

Cole can't tell the difference. Kai can.

Cole swallows, his own eyes are wet. Those, are tears. "Whatever you're going through, remember, we're here for you." He squeezed Kai's hand. "Even Jay. I know he's been distant, but he's worried about you." Cole paused. "We all are. You- you're acting strange, and you aren't telling us anything." His voice was almost pleading.

The rain is loud. Cole don't seem to hear it.

Kai barely felt his hand being held. Pixal appeared in his vision suddenly. Maybe she was here all along, Kai probably wouldn't notice. Her green eyes shone intensely, focused entirely on Kai. There is concern. A lot of it.

He doesn't get it. Why would they worry for him? He is...he is...

Kai's throat fills with water. He swallows it down. They wouldn't get it.

The rain continues on.

They stay with him in silence. They look sadder and more resigned with every second ticking by.

Kai has nothing to say. They stop trying to get him to talk.

They fall asleep. He does not. He doesn't need to anymore.

Lloyd comes in some time later. His eyes shadowed, dark circles under his eyes contrasting starkly to his pale face. He still wears hoodies over everything else.

He sees Pixal and Cole, slouched on the couch with their eyes closed. He looks at Kai. Their eyes met.

Lloyd wordlessly climbs in next to him, clambering under his arm. Kai lets him.

It's the least he can do.

Lloyd falls still and silent a couple of minutes later. Kai does not. He closes his eyes and pretends.

He listens to the rain.

He hears two pairs of footsteps approach. One heavier, the sound of metallic limbs thudding against the floorboards. Other slightly lighter, with socked feet trying to be stealthy. They fail.

Kai keeps his eyes closed. There's no need to open them.

Zane and Jay stop in the doorway. They stare. Kai feels their eyes on himself. They stare at him only.

"I don't like how...quiet he is." That was Jay. His voice sounded rough. From misuse or almost constant crying. Kai can't tell.

He sounds guilty. Kai can't understand why.

There was a shuffle. A monotone voice rung out. "He is processing everything that happened. It is common to begin a journey of grief with denial."

Jay made a noise of understanding. He sniffled. "Still, it's scary to see him so...not here. He's like a ghost. I hate it."

Their voices carried away, still quietly talking. The living room plunged into silence.

The rain fell. Kai wished to join it.

There was an emergency at the shore. A construction gone wrong, collapsing a majority of wooden docks stationed around it. Nobody got hurt. They need help with making the beach accessable again.

The ninja are called in. They all go together as a team for the first time in weeks. It's silent most of the trip, save for quiet conversations here and there. Lloyd sticks close to him. Jay doesn't avoid him as much anymore.

Kai feels nothing.

They step down from the destiny's bounty. The whole place is a mess. Wood and metal and some other debris littered around the sand and water.

They get to work.

Kai's staying furthest away from the waterline, lifting heavy piles of wood away, stacking them neatly in the right container.

The sea is so close. Kai can feel it reaching out to him. He distractedly continues his task, his mind nothing but water.

The waves are restless. The sky is gray.

Kai watched as Cole picked up a large fallen wooden pillar, placing it aside. The area emptied out not too long ago, as most of the workers and civilians stepped back, letting the group work without worrying about injuring anyone.

The waves roared in his ears. The water swaying with the movement. His insides are liquid, staying in the vessels he calls his body. It doesn't feel like he belongs to it.

He doesn't feel anything.

Pixal used her mech to collect the biggest part of the collapsed dock. Kai saw her retreating a bit to put it a safe distance away.

He stays still. His task forgotten.

The sea is screaming for him. It takes everything in him not to scream back.

He wants to.

His eyes followed Lloyd and Jay as they diligently kept inspecting the area of the beach and surrounding docks, repeatedly bending down, grabbing sharp pieces of metal off the ground. It would be a pain to step on them barefoot.

Zane stoically directed Cole to the next wooden pillar that needed to be moved. Cole moved without word.

Kai stays still.

He doesn't move.

He doesn't think.

He doesn't breathe. His lungs beg for the salt of the sea.

Kai looks at the rest of his team. Those that are left anyway. They're distracted.

There are no eyes on him.

The ocean calls him again.

There is a flame at the bottom of the sea. He knows her. She's calling his name.

It's too loud to ignore.

Kai moves.

His feet purposely stride through the sand, the sound of it inaudible over the howling of the water. His skin feels restricting. His bones scrape against each other. The liquid in his veins is no longer red.

He needs not this flesh vessel. He has no use for it anymore.

Step by step, the water grows closer. And with it a sense of familiarity.

He's going home.

"-and then we need-Kai? What are you-"

He's so close. He can taste salt on his tongue. The burning inferno within his very essence working in tandem with the droplet of the ocean.

For all this time, he thought he was only flames. But he was ignorant. He was a fool.

He is a raging forest fire, accompanied by a mere droplet of water.

She is a raging ocean, accompanied by a mere flicker of flame.

They are family.

They are the same.

They are one.

"Kai?", "Where are you-"

His feet touch the sea. His fire gives way to water.

He is content.

-"Stop!" "What the hell are you-"

He feels his body starting to merge with the sea-

-"WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!"

-"KAI!!"

And he feels complete.

Chapter Text

Lloyd knew fear.

He grew up with it at his side. He remembered his early days at darkley's, the way his body trembled as he hid under the bed, away from an angry group of older boys. He remembered the nights after getting kicked out of the boarding school, how terrified of the darkness he was back then. The smallest noise send him into a panicked frenzy.

He remembered as the ninja took him in, as the prophecy of the green ninja was revealed. He remembered the fear. The fear of failing, of fighting his dad, of losing his new family.

One would think he would be used to the feeling of fear. Of the way the heart skips a beat and cold sweat drenches the skin.

And yet.

Cold numbness spread over his body at the sight of Kai, Kai, the most repulsed by the thought of being anywhere near water, walking right towards the raging sea.

The sea they all tried their best to ignore since arriving earlier.

Cole seemed to notice the movement as well, pausing his conversation with Zane, "-Kai? What are you-" he cut himself off as the red ninja didn't even acknowledge him.

He continued walking. Closer to the water.

Lloyd swallowed hard. He only managed to choke out a weak, "Kai?"

Jay, who just turned around from pushing around the debris, called out. "Where are you -"

The blue ninja couldn't even finish the sentence, as Kai steadly walked right into the lapsing waves and didn't stop-

No, he can't be trying to-to-

Lloyd could barely hear the other ninja yell out in alarm, too busy sprinting towards Kai, his feet kicking up sand and his heart lodged in his throat.

He's way too far away.

No-

Thousands of thoughts ran through his head, the panic and anger almost drowning him. He was about to yell out, to ask just what the hell Kai though he was he doing, but he choked on his own words instead at the sight before him.

Kai, the master of fire, letting the waves circle him, embrace him.

Then the water around Kai started glowing.

What the-

The water, now glowing a brilliant blue, reached out to the red ninja and he-

He started turning into the sea.

He started turning into the sea-

He was leaving-

"KAI!!" Lloyd's heart rammed against his ribcage as the name ripped from his throat, feeling like blades cutting into flesh. He skidded to a stop at the waterline, his knees colliding with the rough, wet sand.

No, please-

His eyes desperately roamed the waves, trying to catch a glimpse of the warm and bright red of Kai's suit. But they were too late. He was too late.

Kai was gone. His body the same transparent blue as the waves that consumed him.

Just like they consumed Nya.

Lloyd didn't know how long he sat there, silent, brokenly staring at the endless pool of blue death. He could vaguely hear yelling and crying around him, but the sounds were muffled. His eyes were burning. His ears won't stop ringing. He-

Something heavy landed on his shoulder, and Lloyd, despite the overwhelming despair trying to choke him, turned his head to meet Cole's glassy, broken, oh so heartbroken eyes.

The earth ninja fruitlessly tried to wipe his face clean of tears. "Come on Lloyd, we- we gotta go home." Lloyd could tell Cole was trying to keep it together, but the choked out words only made him want to cry harder.

How are they supposed to- to just go home? Without- without Kai?!

Jay sobbed from behind Cole, a harsh and awful sound. He cursed before speaking."Is that why he's s been so fuckin' distant these past few weeks?! He's been so- so-!"

The blue ninja cut himself off, another sob crawling out of his throat. Lloyd could only see the blurry outline of Zane as he approached, silent.

"Pixal is on her way with the bounty. We need to tell master Wu." His voice carried like a glacier in the sea.

So, so cold.

Lloyd inhaled sharply.

It's going to be so cold without-

Lloyd blinked and the tears seemed endless, running down his face. Cole bit down on his lip to keep any sounds from escaping. Jay cried loudly and Lloyd joined him in misery.

It's going to be so, so cold.

They arrived at the monastery late in the evening.

Master Wu greeted them in the courtyard, but his expression changed at the sorry sight of his four miserable students, and a devastated samurai.

Lloyd could see the moment Wu realized, after a headcount, that they were short another ninja. Lloyd clenched his fists harder.

Wu hesitated for only a moment. "...Where is Kai?"

That did it.

Cole hid his face in his trembling hands, his shoulders tense. He tried to compose himself during the entire trip back to tell their master. It was futile.

Jay's face scrunched up in a truly awful way, the tears never leaving his face. Pixal put a hand on his shoulder, her own face hidden behind synthetic hair as she bowed her head.

Lloyd was ready to swallow the lump in his throat and tell his master that another student of his was lost-

Zane stepped in front of the group.

Lloyd was thankful for that, even if shame creeped up on him at the same time.

'You're supposed to be the leader. You're supposed to be strong.'

...How could he be, in a situation like this.

The master of ice did not sugarcoat it. "Kai merged with the sea. We were not able to stop him."

And hearing it said so bluntly, really hit Lloyd too. His chest coiled with cold grief.

Kai was gone.

Wu's eyes widened in shock. It barely lasted a second, before his golden eyes fell, grief and sadness shadowing them enough to appear a regular brown.

He opened his mouth to say something, yet no words came out.

What is there to say?

Lloyd closed his eyes.

It's going to be so, so cold.

In the depths of the endless sea, an echo of a joyous laughter travelled across the waves, soon joined by another.

The sea was finally whole.

The laughter continued as the twin ocean entities raced all around the brilliant waters.

The sea has never felt more alive.

One of them stoped for a second, his blue eyes roaming around the magnificence of the ocean. His body formed of water seemed a bit too warm, but he never let it bother him.

He was just made of volcanic waters, after all.

A sudden movement brought his attention back to his sister.

She reached out to him, her voice loud and impatient. "Come on brother! We have so much more of the sea to explore!" She put her hand out, the cerulean blue limb inviting.

He smiled, and, with no hesitation, reached out to let her drag him away, wherever the current led to, like always.

The joyful laughter rippled across the waves.

The ocean was at peace.
