Chapter Text

Evan Phillips, a talented pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers, stood by his locker in the middle of the empty Dodgers locker room, his heart heavy with a mix of emotions. News had just reached him that his teammate and the man who had captured his affections, Joey Gallo, had signed with the Minnesota Twins for the upcoming 2023 season. The realization of how this made him feel hit him like a fastball to the chest, leaving him breathless and broken-hearted.

Evan had always been drawn to Joey, captivated by his fun-loving attitude, his kind smile, his infectious laughter, and of course, his incredible talent on the field. But it was more than that. Ever since the early days of their friendship, Evan couldn't deny the way his heart skipped a beat every time Joey entered the room, his stunning physique accentuated by his baseball uniform. In the locker room, Evan had discreetly stolen glances, his eyes admiring Joey's handsome features, but he was always careful never to let his feelings show, fearing the potential consequences it might have on their friendship and team dynamics.

As the days passed, Evan tried his best to process the news of Joey's departure, and found himself lost in a sea of memories, replaying the moments he had shared with Joey: the playful banter in the dugout, the celebratory hugs after a hard-fought victory, and the stolen glances during practice. He cherished each and every one of those moments, knowing deep down that as time passed, all of those memories would become distant. The realization that he would no longer be able to see Joey every day, share inside jokes, or playfully compete on the field left a void in his heart. It felt like a piece of Evan's world was being ripped away.

One evening, a few days before Joey's departure, the team gathered for a farewell dinner in honor of Joey. Evan masked his sadness with a brave smile. He didn't want to burden Joey with his unrequited feelings, knowing it would only complicate matters. Instead, he focused on cherishing the time they had left together.

As the night wore on, the team laughed and reminisced, and Evan couldn't help stealing glances at Joey, trying to memorize every detail. He admired the way Joey interacted with their friends, his contagious laughter filling the room. Evan's heart ached, knowing that soon he would no longer be part of these cherished moments.

However, just as the evening seemed to be drawing to a close, Joey took Evan aside to speak with him privately, a curious expression on his face. Evan tried to play it cool, despite not feeling at all sure of what was about to unfold. With a mixture of anticipation and trepidation, he waited for Joey to speak.

"Can’t help noticing how quiet you’ve been tonight,” Joey observed, wearing a look of concern. “Are you okay?”

Evan took a deep breath, gathering his thoughts as he summoned the courage to open his heart and speak honestly.

"Joey," he finally began, his voice laced with a mixture of sadness and vulnerability. "I want you to know how much you've meant to me, not just as a teammate, but as a friend. I'm really going to miss you."

Joey nodded, his gaze earnest. He reached out, placing a hand on Evan's shoulder. "You're not alone, Evan. I've treasured our friendship too. I'll miss your support, your sense of humor…pretty much everything about you."

"I've admired you from the moment we became teammates," Evan went on. "Your energy, your positivity…I care about you…maybe even more than I'd care about someone who's…just a friend."

Surprised, Joey's eyes widened, almost as though he wasn't fully able to comprehend Evan's words. A faint blush crept into his cheeks, and he slowly said, "Evan, I had no idea. I never thought... I mean, I never wanted to complicate things between us."

A flicker of understanding passed between them, and Evan could see the reflection of his own longing in Joey's eyes. They stood in a shared moment of vulnerability, the unspoken truth hanging in the air.

"Are you…" Evan began slowly. "Are you saying you feel the same way?"

Joey nodded, a warm smile gracing his lips. "I didn't want to say anything because I thought you were out of my league, Evan. But now that we're going to be apart, I can't bear the thought of not having you know how I've felt."

Evan's heart soared as the weight of Joey's words settled upon him. The possibility of a future where their feelings could be acknowledged and explored filled him with hope.

"You know, Evan, sometimes things change unexpectedly. Maybe this move isn't the end for us. Perhaps it's just the beginning of something new."

It was true. While their paths were about to diverge, the connection between them remained intact, a bond that could transcend distance and change.

Joey reached for Evan's hand and squeezed it gently, a twinkle in his eyes. "Evan, let's promise to stay in each other's lives, no matter where our careers take us."

"It's a promise," Evan said with a smile, his heart racing with a newfound sense of joy and relief.

As they returned to the gathering, Evan and Joey shared a silent understanding, their feelings of love, now confessed, lingering in the air. They knew that their journey was far from over, and that going forward they would always support each other through victories and defeats, even if they were wearing different team jerseys.

Together, they embraced the bittersweet farewell, eager to see where life would take them next. And as the two men said their goodbyes, they couldn't help but feel a renewed sense of hope, knowing that whatever obstacles came their way, their love would always be their strongest ally.
