Apollo and Artemis in the Chamber of Secrets

Summary:

Final editing completed February 2024.

After Catherine "Cat" Price, known as Apollo, learns from her best friend Ekaterina "Kit" Orlov, known as Artemis, at six years old that Cat is a Witch, Cat's whole life changes forever.

At eleven years old, Cat joins Kit for their first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft of Wizardry where they begin a lifelong friendship with fellow First Year, Lysandra Grey. But something dangerous is lurking the halls of Hogwarts, something that could very well kill Cat. Will Cat, Kit, and Lysandra survive their first year at Hogwarts?

Notes:

I know in canon the entrance to Hufflepuff House Common Room was "in a nook on the right hand side of the kitchens corridor", but for the purposes of this fanfic, the entrance to the Hufflepuff House Common Room is inside the kitchens themselves. And instead of tapping on the barrels in the rhythm of "Helga Hufflepuff" like it is in canon, in this fanfic, the entrance to the Hufflepuff House Common Room is also covered by a portrait, like Gryffindor Tower is, but Hufflepuff House's Common Room portrait entrance doesn't have a person in it. It's a portrait of a table with food and to open the door you have to "tickle the fuzzy pear" on the portrait for the portrait to open. I wanted to keep the whole, "no password" part the same, but part of the fanfic involves one character having to leave the kitchens so one of the main characters can return to the Hufflepuff House Common Room and that's why I made the entrance in the kitchens instead of outside them. Also, it didn't make sense to use barrels to a basement if the entrance was in the kitchens, so I used a headcanon I once read about the entrance to the Hufflepuff House Common Room as a portrait entrance instead of the barrels. I had read the headcanon long before I learned the real way to enter the Hufflepuff House Common Room.

Trivia:

- Cat's brothers are identical triplets.

- Cat's Great-Aunt Mary (Princess Mary, Countess of Orford) doted on Cat and her Great-Uncle Edward's (Prince Edward, Duke of Buckingham) daughter and granddaughters as Princess Mary only had sons.

- Cat's grandfather, Lord George Price, 1st Duke of Bridport, gave up his titles of His Royal Highness and Prince of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in agreement with Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second that he could take on noble titles, the titles being: Duke of Bridport (which she allowed him to choose), Earl of Beaconsfield, and Baron Kendal. As he was no longer considered a legal member of the Royal Family of the United Kingdom and thus only an extended member, despite being a grandson and nephew of former kings as well a first cousin to the current Queen. Which in turn made Cat the Queen's first cousin twice removed but made her Cat's first cousin (confusing, I know). Due to the fact that George, who was no longer Prince George of Buckingham, but was now Lord George Price, Duke of Bridport (as he had adopted a surname), a legal citizen of the United Kingdom and not a legal member of the Royal Family, he was legally allowed to be involved in politics, which was expected of most lords, even in 1956 when George was bestowed his title upon marriage to Lady Mary-Margaret O'Neill of Dungganon, which he made sure took place at the small parish church in Bridport (instead of St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle like his siblings), though it was a huge spectacle with journalists coming from not only all over the Realm, but all over the Commonwealth to get a shot of the ceremony as well. The Queen, Prince Phillip, Princess Margaret, and the Queen Mother (who had always liked George and enjoyed the closeness he'd had with her husband, the late King George the Sixth [whom George had been named after along with his grandfather the late King George the Fifth]) were in attendance.

- Lord George Price, 1st Duke of Buckingham, was a Former Appointed Member of the House of Lords from August 1959 to May 1990. He was appointed by his first cousin, Queen Elizabeth II, on advice from then Prime Minister, Anthony Eden. George was able to be a Member of the House of Lords as he'd given up his titles of HRH and a Prince of the United Kingdom, making it so he was no longer a legal member of the Royal Family (who are not legally able to be involved in politics according to the Constitution), and making it so he was now only a legal citizen of the United Kingdom. Now, he was simply a distant cousin with a noble title.

- Many thought it was odd that George out of all of the younger sons of Elizabeth's cousins, including George's own brother, Prince William of Buckingham, was the only one to receive any titles upon marriage as it wasn't tradition to bestow titles on any on the younger grandsons of past monarchs. It was only tradition to bestow titles on the younger grandsons of current sitting monarchs. For example, if in the future (as it did come to pass in the twenty-first century with Elizabeth's eldest son, Charles's, own sons) Elizabeth's sons had multiple sons, it would be quite normal for her to bestow titles on the younger of the grandsons as the elders would inherit their fathers titles, as George's brother, Prince Edward, Duke of Buckingham, had done with their father's. Though, there had been speculation that the reason Queen Elizabeth was kind enough not only to bestow the titles onto George, but also to allow him to choose his own Dukedom, despite the fact he created a brand new one that did not use the traditional names of shires or large cities, was because George had reportedly been the late King George the Sixth's favourite nephew. George was his second oldest nephew, born a few weeks before King George the Sixth's youngest daughter, Margaret, while George's brother Edward had been born two years before her, and only two years after King George the Sixth's eldest daughter, Queen Elizabeth. George, Edward, the Royal daughters, George's sister Mary (born in 1931), and his younger brother William (born in 1934) were all raised together, almost like siblings, up until the Second World War started, and then again after the war ended, they were close again until George moved to Bridport. While Elizabeth herself was close to George and saw him as a brother, which may have added to her reasoning for bestowing the titles, many speculated it was his closeness to her father. The Queen Mother often wrote that she believed her husband saw George and his brothers as if they were as much his sons as his brother's sons. King George the Sixth and his brother, Prince Frederick, Duke of Buckingham, were only three years apart. The actual date of the birthdays were one month and one day apart, Frederick's first on the thirteenth of November, and then the late King's (who was known as Bertie by family his whole life) on the fourteenth of December. While King George the Sixth was closest to his elder brother, Prince Edward, Duke of Windsor (who was known as David by his family his whole life), before his elder brother abdicated so he could marry the divorcee, Wallis Simpson, whom he'd fallen in love with, it seemed that after the Duke of Windsor was exiled from Britain, the late King got closer to his younger brother, Prince Frederick (who was known as Louis by his family, his third Christian name). Part of the reason that King George the Sixth was so close to George was because they were both interested in the Navy from a young age. One biographer, Duke Terrence Lyon (fake person), said "For both the King and the Duke, it was like they were born with salt in their veins and the sea calling their names. Their hearts belonged to England, there was no doubt about that. They felt a pride and duty to their nation, their homeland. No one would argue that. But their souls? Their souls belonged to the sea." The King and Queen, then the Duke and Duchess of York, started to help his brother, Prince Frederick, raise his four children after the tragic loss of his wife who was born Lady Augusta Knox of Ranfurly. She died while giving birth to their youngest child, Prince William of Buckingham, on the twenty-third of February 1934. In the years following, even after King George the Sixth's ascension to the throne, he and his wife supported and aided his brother in bringing up the young family in any way they could despite the hard times of the Second World War.

- George had spent six months on research for the location name of his title. When he came across Bridport, he was intrigued by its history. He'd already known that he'd only be able to choose a port town, whether it was a large city or not didn't matter, simply because the title he got to choose had to have a connection to the sea, so after his meeting with the Queen, he pulled out his map and set a table next to his set of Encyclopedias so he'd be close enough to pull them out, and had a sheet of paper and a pencil to write down names of towns he wanted to learn more of the history about and started looking at the map. Days went by. His valet kept taking away and bringing him new books to read on the history of the port towns that he was interested in. He'd just reached Dorset's shire and Bridport. George had been reading about the small six thousand population town and it's history of rope and net manufacturing when he came across something he found extremely interesting. It seemed that during the English Civil War, a majority of the population were Royalists. This not only interested George, but as the grandson, nephew, and first cousin of monarchs, it warmed his heart. As he read on, George learned that near the end of the war, following the Battle of Worcester, King Charles the Second briefly stayed in the town as he sought escape from the Parliamentarian forces and the town's population helped protect him. That solidified his decision. George decided he wanted to bear the title, Duke of Bridport, to honour the men and women who had supported and done their part for their King. A sacrifice he would have freely done as well. They deserved to be remembered, even if history had forgotten them until then, and even if their names were never to be recorded. So, the day before George's wedding, after George signed away his titles of HRH and Prince of the United Kingdom and all Rights and Honours that went with it, and just before leaving Buckingham Palace to travel to Dorset to spend the night in Bridport at the same hotel as the future newlyweds, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, signed the document naming the newly named George Price, Duke of Bridport, Earl of Beaconsfield, and Baron Kendal.

- Upon Prince Frederick, Duke of Buckingham's marriage to Lady Augusta Knox of Ranfurly, his parents purchased an estate for the royal couple in Scotland. It became known as Buckingham Estate (so it wouldn't become confused with Buckingham Palace in London). The Estate is located ten minutes outside of Erskine, Scotland. On the fourteenth of May 1990, Lord George Price, 1st Duke of Bridport, was driving alone to his brother's estate. His wife, Lady Mary-Margaret Price (née O'Neill), Duchess of Bridport, had decided to stay at Cat's place a few extra days with her son and grandchildren. She was going to fly up to Scotland and meet her husband later on. Lord Bridport made the short drive in a terrible rainstorm at 11:30 pm. He had decided (since George still thought himself a spring chicken at only 59) to drive the whole way from his estate, Bridport Hall, twenty minutes outside of Bridport, Dorset to his brother's estate. The whole drive being about eight maybe nine hours mattering how long one stopped for breaks. The rainstorm was terrible and visibility was low. George hydroplaned not far from Buckingham Estate's driveway entrance, and his car wrapped itself around one of the trees that lined the property of Buckingham Estate. George died on impact. The title automatically went to his eldest son, George Edward Price Jr. and his wife Diana Jane Price (née Abbott).

- Lord George Price Jr., 2nd Duke of Bridport, is a Member of the House of Lords, a position he inherited from his late father, Lord George Price Sr., 1st Duke of Bridport, who had been appointed by their first cousin, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, on advice from the then Prime Minister, Anthony Eden, in August 1959. George has served since June 1990.

- Even though Cat's grandfather wasn't technically a 'Royal Duke', as he had forfeited his Royal status, titles, and place in the Royal family, both personally and the media still referred to him as a 'Royal Duke' as they do with her Uncle George. As such, even within her own family and her families' staff George Price is referred to as a 'Royal Duke'.  However, since he is not officially a 'Royal Duke', he is able, as his father was able to, hold his seat in the House of Lords. A position he takes seriously and that is near and dear to his heart. George Price fights for the people of the UK daily.

- Lady Diana Price, Duchess of Bridport was an Art Critic and an Art Gallery owner. She opened her Art Gallery named "Sapphirus", the Latin word for Sapphire (Diana's favourite gemstone/jewel) in 1978. Two major investors had been her parents, Thomas Abbot and Edith Abbott (née Blackwood). Lady Bridport's father was (at the time but later retired) the Chief Financial Officer of the Aurora Bank Corporation, a small collection of Banks that had been established by the Abbott family in London in 1892, and had been led by them, despite being a Corporation since 1918, ever since its creation. Her uncle, Oliver Abbott, was the Chief Executive Officer, and her aunt, Cathleen Meyer (née Abbott), was the Chief Operations Officer, and all three siblings were members of the Board of Trustees. Diana's aunt, uncle, and their spouses had also invested in Sapphirus as they believed in Diana's dream.

- Lady Bridport had met her husband through her Art Gallery and Cat's mother, Rosalie. As Rosalie was an artist, she had been looking for somewhere to showcase one of her pieces in 1979, not long after she'd married Johnathan, both being just twenty at the time of their marriage, and she found out about Diana's Art Gallery, Sapphirus. Rosalie was intrigued, and so she travelled to London, as she and Johnathan lived in Bridport Hall with Johnathan's parents after they were married due to the fact that Johnathan (who'd just completed his Bachelors of Arts in History, based in Greek Mythology at William and Mary University in Bridport) was getting his Masters in Greek Mythology at William and Mary University as well, (they were planning on, with the current Duke's and Duchess's as well as Rosalie's parents' help, buying a house in Bridport soon), where she met Diana and toured Sapphirus. Rosalie felt she'd found the perfect place to showcase her artwork, and Diana felt she'd found another young artist to help showcase. Diana was more than happy to accept Rosalie's work. A month later, at the opening of the new gallery showing, Rosalie, Johnathan, both of theirs parents, and George (who was Earl of Beaconsfield at the time), came to the gallery opening. It was the first time George and Diana met. They instantly fell for one another. George and Diana were married three months later and she gained the title Countess of Beaconsfield. George already lived in London, where he worked in his father's office learning to take over as a Member of the House of Lord one day, and so he didn't have to uproot his life. Diana continued to run her gallery, and she became known for her eye as a critic. Following the death of her father-in-law, and her husband's ascension to the title of Duke of Bridport, Diana sold her gallery, despite how much it killed her to do it, and took upon her the duties of the Duchess of Bridport with a smile.

- The Lord Johnathan Price began his University studies at William and Mary University in Bridport at seventeen. He completed a Bachelors degree in Art, majoring in History with a concentration in Greek Mythology. He then went on to gain a Masters degree in Greek Mythology, and a PhD, all from William and Mary, and all by the age of 28 as a single father of four. Johnathan was then offered, after he completed his PhD at William and Mary, a teaching position to take over the Greek Mythology department for his former professor, Edward Burton. It was there, at William and Mary University, where Johnathan and Rosalie met. Rosalie too had been raised in Bridport, and had taken a two year Nursing certificate course at William and Mary University where she'd ran into Johnathan and some of his friends one day. They hit it off from the start.

- After completing her Nursing course at William and Mary University in Bridport, Rosalie was hired by the Bridport Community Hospital in 1978. She worked there until 1981, when she found out she was pregnant with Cat.

- All of Cat's immediate family, her grandparents (even her late grandfather, the Duke of Bridport), her Uncle George, and her Aunt Diana, all know of Cat's magical abilities.

- Not only is Cat skilled at creating art, but her Aunt Diana would often take her to work with her as an Art Critic, so Cat got well trained in studying art as well. Cat also enjoyed her trips to her Aunt Diana's Art Gallery and dreamed of one day having her art showcased there. It broke Cat's heart and brought her to tears when she was nine years old and her aunt had to sell the gallery and take on her official duties as a Duchess.

- Cat, like her father, was a skilled musician. Johnathan taught her to play the violin and the piano. When she was eight, she informed her father that she wanted to learn to play the flute because she thought it was "a graceful instrument". As he couldn't play the instrument himself, Johnathan sought out a tutor for Cat who taught her to play.

- Cat has a deep interest in many different types of mythologies, and any time a new mythology is brought up, she finds herself intrigued by them. Despite being all of eleven years old, Cat is well versed in Greek Mythology due to her father's job.

- Cat and her best friend, Kit, as Kit's parents, Khatrion and Hanne Orlov, believed that if a child was properly educated before hand it was safe to attempt by the age of ten, began attempting to become Animagi the day after Cat's tenth birthday. They both turned the end of August just before they started at Hogwarts. Kit took the form of a Wolf, her mark being her uniquely human baby blue eyes, and Cat took the form of a badger, her mark being all her fur being the same shade as her dark hair.

Trivia:

- Kit's father, Khatrion, had a particular interest in magical creatures that his friends and family, and even his former professor, Albus Dumbledore, often said could have rivalled the the famous Newt Scamander who literally wrote the book on magical creatures. Due to his interest, he often kept magical creatures at their home, despite living in a Muggle town, even when the family lived in a small apartment. Because of this, Kit herself developed an affinity for magical creatures, and was raised with an open mind towards them and even with an open, caring, supportive sensibility towards Werewolves, whom her father believed that most Werewolves were misunderstood. Khatrion also believed that very few Werewolves were like the infamous Fenrir Greyback. Meanwhile, during Kit's early years before she began at Hogwarts, and during her summers after beginning at Hogwarts, Kit and Cat would often help Khatrion care for his magical creatures.

- Kit and Cat, as Khatrion and Hanne believed that if a child was properly educated before hand it was safe to attempt by the age of ten, began attempting to become Animagi the day after Cat's tenth birthday.
