   Summary

   Follows on from The Case of the Oblivious Doctor.
   Sherlock and John have moved to the countryside and are getting used to the new freedoms they have now they live in a cottage of their own with a private garden and a housekeeper who is comfortable with their relationship.
   Trouble is, Holmes is getting bored and needs a case. So, when their housekeeper’s husband vanishes without a word, Holmes promises to find out what happened to him. He finds a lot more, besides.

   I stood out of sight of the door. Sherlock knocked, then went inside when the door swung open at a push. I followed a couple of minutes after he had vanished into the dark, striking a match to see my way. The stench of urine and of decay was stronger here. Something ran over my foot - a rat I supposed - and I dropped the match. It extinguished and left me in darkness. I reached a hand out and felt along the damp plaster for the place the wall curved into the stairwell, and slowly ascended.
