Summary
You’re not quite sure when it happened.
It started one evening, that much you were certain. The curtained windows were flung open to let in the humid summer air, the cicadas buzzing, and the faint night life of the city had been coming through. The newly painted living room seeped through the door of the office you and Miguel were in, your faces flushed from the wine from dinner.
One moment you were checking your work emails to finalize your maternity leave, chatting with Miguel over the computer, your skins warmed from the lively fireplace, and the next, it was like the crackling fire had been reduced to a mere painting.
Eventually, the warmth crept back into the room, and the two of you continued like nothing happened. Even though Miguel laughed it off, you’d seen the way his eyes had sharpened, the way his shoulders tightened, his jaw tensed. This newfound coil of anxiety didn’t dare dissipate, even later on.
Perhaps that was the start of it all.
