It’s About Time

Summary:

How many years had they been together, without actually being together? How many ‘joke’ proposals had Rinne made that were met with rejection? How many nights had Niki cooked them dinner with Rinne’s arms wrapped around his waist? How much longer could they keep this up, pretending to know what the other was thinking and avoiding true happiness? It was about time something changed and Rinne was feeling like taking the biggest gamble of his life.

(In which Rinne finally works up the courage to ask Niki what the Hell is going on between them and they share their first kiss. Kind of my chance to analyse their relationship and them as characters tbh)

Notes:

Uhh so this is gonna be my first post on here but the Rinniki brainworms are eating me alive haha help me

Thanks to my bestie for dragging me into Enstars Hell ig this is kind of for you so enjoy x

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Rinne turned his wrist to check the time, cracking open a final can of beer. He figured that he’d have time for another drink despite already being late to meeting Niki after his shift at the café. Even though he told Niki he would definitely be there to walk him home - he also knew they both knew he could get a little carried away gambling, so it was safe to assume Niki would start making his own way home. Tonight’s lateness wasn’t so much about the redhead getting carried away though and more so to do with the fact that he was procrastinating the inevitable.

He had decided sometime throughout the week that he couldn’t take it anymore. He had to put his pride aside and be unapologetically raw with Niki about his feelings. He couldn’t even tell when it happened but at some point, throughout all of the minutes, hours, days and years that he and Niki had spent together, Rinne Amagi fell in love. Hard.

Suddenly everything about Niki made his heart flutter and his head ache. He became obsessed with the idea that they could be a family, that he could give Niki everything he ever needed. This dream was almost realised, too. They were so close to pure happiness when Niki offered to come along to Rinne’s hometown to live with him. Surely Niki knew what that meant? They were basically eloping.

Rinne ran a hand through his hair, closing his eyes for a moment to gather his thoughts. They hadn’t talked about anything that happened. Then again, they never really did talk about anything that happened between them. That was the issue. For a while it was fine because Rinne didn’t really care what the Hell they meant to each other, as long as they were together. Now though, seeds of doubt had begun sprouting in his chest as he wondered… what if Niki doesn’t love him? At least, not in the way Rinne loves Niki. He had taken it for granted that they were in Love - that they were simply taking things slow, letting nature take its course. After all, when they were alone they were all over each other. Sure, they hadn’t kissed but it wasn’t for a lack of Niki asking if they could. Rinne just… didn’t want to unless he was certain Niki was going to be his forever. Maybe he was afraid. Afraid that he could fall even further in love with Niki only to disappoint him, to do the wrong thing and fuck everything up.

“Damn.” Rinne glanced at his watch again. He may be late for pickup but he could still meet Niki halfway. He decided to start walking, drinking as he went. He idly jangled the little change he had left in his pocket, glancing down to be reminded of the keychain hanging from his belt loop. It was an adorable plush avocado complete with little black eyes, soft smile and blush strokes. “Niki’s gonna love you, little guy~” Rinne pat the plush, chuckling to himself. It was somewhat of an apology for being late and a distraction if he needed one from spilling his emotional guts.

It wasn’t long before their paths crossed, or rather, before Rinne spotted the back of his target speeding off towards their apartment. Well, Niki would go to lengths to prove that the apartment wasn’t theirs and that Rinne was just freeloading off of him whenever he needed a place to stay. It was nothing more than denial - a performance - if you asked Rinne. They could both quite happily and easily stay in their respective dorms or even go between them to hangout - but that wasn’t the case. No, in fact, Niki was the first to suggest that they both spend the weekends at the apartment. Rinne reminisced, shaking his head with a smile at Niki’s words; ‘There’s so much more freedom to cook! Besides, I’m used to you being there to try out my recipes. If anything, you owe me for ruining my life!’

“Ruining’ your life, eh Niki?.” Rinne mumbled, trying not to alert the speedy chef ahead of him to his presence. He took one last gulp of his beer, resisting the urge to crush the can in his hands like he always did. Instead, he disposed of it quietly in the nearest bin. They were in a pretty secluded spot, a lengthy alley that cuts through to the back entrance of their apartment. It was late and the lights were few and far between. The perfect environment for a playful ambush. With eyes locked on his target, Rinne quickened his pace until he was close enough to make his attack.

Before Niki could react to the sound of sudden heavy footfalls behind him, he was being assaulted. Two strong arms wrapped around his shoulders, pulling him into a painfully tight embrace. He yelped, his feet momentarily leaving the ground as he was lifted and rocked into the hug. He didn’t need to see his attacker because the cackle ringing in his ear was unmistakable.

“Kyahaha! You should be more observant, Niki~ I could have been some psychopath ready to kidnap ya!”

“That would have been better than this! You’re crushing me, you idiot!”

Niki squirmed even when his feet touched the ground, grabbing at Rinne’s forearms and pushing them up, ducking out of his grasp. He spun around with his hands up, ready to defend himself from the inevitable second attack. Despite being prepared, he was still caught stumbling when Rinne’s hands clasped his own and pressed him backwards.

“Ack! Hey- Rinne- I’m gonna fall!”

Just as Niki felt his coordination die, his back slammed against a wall knocking the air from his lungs. Rinne took the opportunity to overpower Niki and switch his grip to the younger’s wrists, holding his arms by his sides. This sort of roughhousing was almost a staple of their relationship, whatever that may be. Rinne had grown used to teasing Niki and it gave him the chance for closeness. It was expected of him now, he guessed, which is why Niki would often verbally retaliate but not physically. At least not as much as he could. The redhead smirked, feeling Niki’s resistance slacken as if on queue. To the untrained eye the chef looked nothing less than pissed; brow furrowed, lips pursed, cheeks puffy and red. To Rinne, he looked like he was starting to forget all about the stress he’d endured throughout the day. Nothing else mattered, so long as he had to focus all his energy on Rinne.

“You’re too easy, Niki-kyun~”

“I am not! I’m just saving my energy for making dinner - which you’re not getting any of, because you abandoned me again.”

Niki didn’t mean that. Or maybe he did but the desire to punish Rinne in such a way would fade before it could be properly acknowledged. There has yet to be a time where Niki has refused to feed Rinne, or anyone for that matter. Any opportunity to cook and hone his skills is one that he will always take. The older man knew this and so wasn’t phased but played along anyway.

“Niki is so mean to me! After all that I’ve done for him today, workin’ my ass off to make him happy…”

Only now were Niki’s wrists released, allowing him to shake off the numbness that was growing. He watched as Rinne reached down, unclipping the plush keychain from his belt loop. Niki gasped, reaching out to take the adorable avocado into his arms. It was small and he was squeezing it to death but he didn’t really care. For a moment he was reminded that Rinne isn’t a menace all the time. Despite this, Niki had a lingering suspicion he was being buttered up for some reason. He squinted, holding the plush out between them.

“What have you done?”

“Hah? I ain’t done nothin’! Can’t I treat my best bee to somethin’ nice?”

“I don’t believe you, you’ve done something bad and you’re trying to butter me up! I can smell the alcohol off you so don’t even lie.”

Rinne kissed his teeth, shaking his head. Niki was right in a way, the alcohol was an attempt at calming his nerves. “You’re really hurtin’ me yanno… not havin’ any faith in me...” Rinne turned his head, hanging low and sniffing in mock sadness. The theatrics were intentional but if Rinne was honest there was a touch of truth to his words.

It was difficult for him to do the right thing all of the time - no, it was difficult for him to do the right thing most of the time. He still wasn’t used to it, wasn’t used to disappointing people and making the wrong calls. It was his own fault, really, that Niki had so little faith in him to do the right thing. What exactly was the right thing to do at any given time, who the fuck knows? Rinne was still figuring it all out. He didn’t want to hurt Niki but sometimes it just ended up happening. All of the times he’s made a promise that he hasn’t kept; like when he left Niki tied to that pillar at the café to play pachinko.

He figured that since he stayed with Niki all night that it would be fine for him to go, considering he’d been waiting to try out the new machines. He even left Niki a note to explain but it didn’t dissipate all of the disappointment. Niki came around quickly, as he tends to do, threatening to hold long grudges that never really work out. Despite this, Rinne could see that he had genuinely upset Niki. He took a gamble and it cost him… did he really deserve Niki Shiina’s love? Maybe this wasn’t a good idea - maybe Rinne should just forget about his stupid plan to-

“Rinne-kun? Hellooooo~ What’s with that expression?”

“Uh…”

Niki had crouched and angled himself so his face was close to Rinne who was still holding his head towards the ground. The younger man looked concerned, tightly knit brow and slightly open mouth. Fuck, Rinne didn’t realise how distracted he was in his own head and must have spaced out. He blinked twice, quick to think of a solution to this problem of Niki beginning to worry. The redhead grinned such a shit eating grin, reaching out to grab Niki’s ponytail gently, pulling him back so that they could both stand straight.

“I’m just so sad that my Niki-kyun would treat me this way~ If he really loves me and wants to make it up to me, he should marry me~”

“Not this again!?” Niki pushed on Rinne’s chest, the plush avocado still in one hand getting its poor adorable face squashed. “How many times do we have to talk about this? It’s not legal for us to get married, so it’s not gonna happen!”

“What if it was legal? Would ya marry me then?”

“Wha-“ Niki paused, noting the slight downturn in the older man’s tone. A majority of the time, specifically when in public, Rinne would speak with a rather energetic tone at a higher volume. He would speak like this while joking around, dipping into lower tones for dramatic effect but it was still noticeably light. The way Rinne just spoke, Niki knew he was being serious. In all the times he had asked Niki to marry him he would never comeback with further questions, just a lot of moaning and groaning. It made Niki nervous - why was his partner being like this all of a sudden? Wasn’t this just like any other day, any other conversation? Maybe, he thought to himself, Rinne has done something really bad and is feeling the shame. Niki tilted his head to the side, searching for answers.

“Aah, have you done something terrible you’re ashamed to admit?” Niki felt tense, switching his game plan with a soft smile. “Nahaha, are you trying to distract me, Rinne-kun~? I promise I won’t be mad, I’ll still cook you dinner! Hurry up and confess your sins so we can go eat, I’m starving~”

Rinne shifted his weight, trying his best to smile. “It’s nothin’ bad.”

“Huh? Then why are you acting like it is?”

The taller man stood straight, leaning back and taking a deep breath as if it could be his last. He was sweating a little now, nervous and completely uncertain. A hand was still in Niki’s ponytail, beginning to rub the strands between his fingers for comfort. Niki leaned into the touch causing Rinne to instinctively brush against his cheek. Usually the chef would start talking, filling up the negative space with thoughtless chatter because he knew it comforted his partner. For some reason, the look on Rinne’s face made him hesitate to speak. He swallowed, unsure of when the lump in his throat formed.

“Niki…”

“Yes, Rinne-kun?”

“Do you love me?”

The space between them was dense. They locked eyes, both searching for answers. Niki wrung the plush in his hands like a dishcloth, breath catching in the back of his throat. He blinked a few times, watching Rinne do the same with downturned pursed lips. The question itself wasn’t new but the delivery was and Niki didn’t know what to make of it. Why was there so much uncertainty in the air all of a sudden? They were never good at definites, their whole relationship thus far ebbed and flowed unrestrained without a label. It wasn’t something Niki was in a rush to correct. Not because he didn’t want there to be certainty and security in their relationship but because he was afraid.

The boy he picked up off the street as fate would have it, just so happened to grow up to be his entire world. What if everything they had was lost? What if they pushed too hard against each other and broke apart? What if, when Niki gave himself entirely to Rinne, he would find disappointment? Niki wasn’t an experienced friend, lover or anything for that matter. The only thing Niki could count on was his ability as a chef and even then…

“Niki…?”

Now it was he who was lost in thought. He blinked, focussing his eyes and realising he had been staring into Rinne’s this whole time. He felt his cheeks heat and his grip on the plush tighten. His knuckles were no doubt whitening. Niki exhaled shakily, thinking of the question and knowing his answer. Yes, he loved him- but Rinne must know this?

He did not, not for definite. Not in the way that he needed to know. Rinne was beginning to feel dizzy in trying to control his breathing. He shifted once more, bringing his other hand out to rest over both of Niki’s which were shaking around the plush. The redhead glanced between their hands and Niki’s eyes, trying to comfort him. It seemed to work. The chef closed his eyes and let out a long sigh before managing to smile again. Rinne felt his heart stop momentarily, admiring his favourite person in the world.

“You know I love you, Rinne-kun.” There was a brief pause, the licking of drying lips. A thousand questions ran through Niki’s head. Did Rinne really not know he was loved? Or did he know and it made him uncomfortable because he didn’t love Niki back? The doubt creeped forward, he had to ask.

“Do you… ah… do you love me?”

“Yes.”

Niki laughed, full and relieved. His smile was wide and bright, making Rinne’s embarrassment over his immediate response dissolve. It was hard not to feel at ease seeing such a beautiful smile. Rinne’s tension gradually dissolved as Niki clipped the plush on his own belt loop, leaving his hands free to reach upwards. It wasn’t a new sensation for Rinne to feel gentle hands cup his cheeks but it made him weak all the same. They were always like this, physically close but at times emotionally apart. Neither of them knew how to articulate their feelings in a totally honest way and so they danced around one another, hoping someone would slip, crashing them together.

Rinne’s voice was low, rough and wobbly. If Niki loved him, then why was he always met with rejection? He had to know, now or never. God knows he has tried to ask a million times.

“If ya love me… and I love you, then,” he reached his hands to grab Niki’s forearms, rubbing circles with his thumbs. “Why not marry me? Really? I know it’s not legal in the city for whatever stupid reason but… fuck, Niki, we could do it back home? Nobody would bat an eye. I’m the monarch, I can do whatever the fuck I want, yeh?”

The hands on Rinne’s cheeks fell to his chest, scrunching up his shirt. Niki didn’t know what to say at first. He hadn’t really thought about going to Rinne’s hometown just to get married? Would that even be legally recognised? Hadn’t their opportunity passed them by months ago when their plans to elope were intercepted? What was the obsession with marriage anyway? They hadn’t even kissed! Niki had asked a few times if he could kiss Rinne and he was met with marriage redirection. The chef felt light headed and it didn’t help that his stomach was starting to grumble. He made a noise of frustration, mostly at himself for the dark clouds in his mind. Think he told himself, you have to think of something to say.

As he was struggling, his partner’s hands moved up his arms, rubbing over his shoulders and gently massaging away some tension. He began to rock back and forth as Rinne gently shook him, prompting a response. “Hey, hey - can ya answer me? Just tell me the truth, Niki, c’mon-“

“Aah, why won’t you just kiss me like a normal person!?”

“Cause I’m terrified to, alright!?”

Their hushed voices rose to a crescendo. It was unusual for them to reach such volumes. Yes, they bickered incessantly but rarely argued and even when they did it was trivial. Although this wasn’t an argument, their emotions were high and the tension in their questions to one another was causing friction.

They stared for what could have been seconds or minutes, each focussed on their own breathing and the sound of the sky opening up. Droplets gradually fell, wetting their faces, causing them to blink away the blur. They gripped each other tighter until Niki loosened and raised his hands back to Rinne’s cheeks. He was terrified and it was a mystery to Niki why.

“What has you so afraid?”

It was difficult to answer but Rinne would try, for Niki. He had to bite his lips as he thought, trying really fucking hard not to make a fool of himself and cry. He had cried in front of Niki a few times and every time he felt like a fool. The younger man was one of two people in his life who he could be vulnerable with, so it was understandable that even then he found it traumatic. He wished so badly to lay his whole heart on the table to Niki, to open himself up without reservation. He had tried - he was trying. He was so afraid of losing him. So afraid of disappointment, of doing the wrong thing. What if he couldn’t make Niki happy? What if he couldn’t satisfy him? What if he was a god awful kisser? The list could go on but it would last a lifetime. Rinne moved his hands to Niki’s cheeks, both holding the other. He held Niki in place as he brought their foreheads together, making the shorter close his eyes.

“I don’t wanna lose you. I don’t want this to be temporary. That’s why I wanna marry ya, cause then it’s official, right? You’d be giving me your life, and I’d be giving you mine. Then we could do whatever we want, go wherever we want, be whoever we want. I could keep ya safe. We’d be family - and not the kinda family that leaves ya to fend for yourself. I’d never leave ya, Niki.”

Niki opened his eyes, sighing and looking up. He watched the rain drip from the redhead’s headband, wondering himself how he was starting to look as they both got soaked. He was smiling, bittersweet. He didn’t know that Rinne could be so romantic. He also didn’t know how Rinne felt, that when he asked Niki to marry him it was deeper than just combining their assets. The logical part of him knew Rinne wasn’t using him for money and shelter but it didn’t stop the doubt sparking now and again. It was enough to make him resistant all this time. Couldn’t they be a family without marriage? It’s not like it would be officiated anytime soon. But if it meant so much to Rinne, even if Niki were to say yes making a promise for the future…

Maybe that was it? Maybe Rinne was too nervous - too scared to be blunt and ask Niki to confirm the parameters of their relationship? Niki found it almost funny, that they both shared the same concerns. They were both holding back for the same reasons, tiptoeing around in fear of pushing the other away. The longest game of chicken. Niki wanted Rinne to kiss him because that would be his sign that they were really together. Rinne wanted Niki to accept his proposal for the same reasons. Neither would make the first move, backing down and retaliating with the same sorry attempts at romance.

Niki dared to lick the rain from his lips, their foreheads still pressed together. He could still faintly smell alcohol, making him wrinkle his nose and smile. He began to wonder if Rinne had been drinking for confidence. He wished he was able to snack on something to give himself a boost because it was getting difficult to handle all of these strong emotions on a empty stomach. Still, he was pretty sure he had the solution to their problems. He angled himself so that their noses touched, getting as close as possible. They had been this close before but only for seconds, usually ending with them suddenly pulling apart and doing everything in their power to occupy the tense space with conversation. This time Niki would make sure they’d stay together.

“I was ready to give everything up to come home with you, remember? That was kind of my way of saying yes, I guess? That I wanted to be with you. Nothing here in the city mattered as much to me as being with you. I don’t know if, how or when we’ll be able to live out your dream of marriage, but…”

Niki let out a shallow laugh, rubbing their noses lightly together which made Rinne grin. He wanted to make his partner happy, to put him at ease before he asked the same question for the hundredth time. This time, he hopes the outcome will be different.

“If I promise to be with you forever, that I’m not going anywhere… will you kiss me?“

And what a time and place it would be to have their first kiss. Pressed against the alley wall, rain pouring down their faces, dimly lit by the moon and streetlights. Both were burning; cheeks red, eyes soft, chests rising and falling in unison. Rinne was fixated on Niki’s lips, wanting nothing more than to close the gap between them. Even after everything, he was still so scared. He didn’t even know how to kiss but was ashamed to admit it. He didn’t picture their lips meeting until they were at the altar and then it would be nothing more than a quick peck to seal the deal. It would be enough to kill the severe nerves, leaving room for confidence to gain for their second kiss. That was going to be their proper kiss, the one with more passion behind closed doors. If Rinne had to give Niki that kind of kiss first, he wasn’t sure he would survive. He had to swallow before he threatened to cough, his throat itching. What was he supposed to do? He didn’t want to just brush their lips together - that would be anticlimactic and what if Niki poked fun at him? But he also didn’t know how to naturally deepen a kiss-

He winced, knowing that he would have to bite the bullet, he swore he would be an open book with Niki. Now was the time to fall and let himself be caught.

“I don’t know what I’m doing, Niki. Can you… damn it, can you kiss me first?”

Niki couldn’t help but practically giggle. It wasn’t often that Rinne showed inexperience or a lack of control in any given situation, yet here he was. The younger had to hold Rinne’s head in place because he was huffing and trying to turn away. His embarrassment was adorable and something that only Niki was able to see. He cherished it for the short time that it would last, knowing that Rinne wouldn’t be a novice for long. The excitement in Niki was growing as his mind began to wander.

“Hmm, if I kiss you this time…. will you kiss me next time? I don’t want this to be the first and last, Rinne-kun~”

His request was met with a good natured scoff. The redhead shifted his feet, moving his hands from Niki’s face and down to his hips. He gulped, pursing his lips with a nod, smiling faintly. It was enough for him to know that Niki didn’t plan on kissing him once and leaving him. For some reason that was one of Rinne’s fears - as if Niki was the type of person to use somebody for physical affection. Both of their fears were illogical but that’s what made all of this so hard to comprehend.

“Yeh, I’ll kiss ya everyday. The first thing I’ll do when I wake up is kiss ya and the last thing I’ll do before I go to sleep is kiss ya.”

Niki couldn’t help but drop his head to bury it into Rinne’s chest. It was surprisingly funny to hear the waver in his voice, as funny as it was endearing. Rinne wasn’t some sort of beast incapable of sincerity as much as he would like people to believe and Niki was forever grateful to know the truth. He pulled back, resting his head against the wall creating space between them. His thumbs ran circles under his partner’s eyes as he devised a plan. To kiss Rinne right now would be a wasted opportunity.

“Rinne-kun~ Can you tell me something you love about me? To give me confidence to kiss you? Otherwise I might have to leave you here in the rain because I’m starving, nahaha~”

There wasn’t nearly enough teasing going on in this situation so Niki decided to rectify that. He was counting on Rinne to take a moment to think about his answer so that he could surprise him. The older man groaned and rolled his eyes, throwing his head to the side so that he didn’t have to look at Niki. He was in two minds - he could play it safe and make up some sort of inappropriate comment to throw Niki off and get a reaction, or he could surprise him with genuine flattery. They had come this far so he figured he might as well lay it all on the table. With a deep breath but not daring to meet Niki’s eyes, Rinne told him how he felt. This was why he loved him;

“You’re selfless. You can’t walk away from somethin’ in need, even if it’s just a tired honeybee in the height of summer, you gotta bring it some sugar water to get it back on its feet. Everybody knows you’d drop everythin - well, unless it’s food - to lend a helping hand. I ain’t ever seen a smile as bright, that fills me with so much warmth. You’re understanding, almost to a fault. You give me the benefit of the doubt even when I don’t deserve it. No matter how many times I hurt you you’ll always see the better side of me - I don’t know how ya do it, Niki. I don’t know what I ever did to deserve you. If I have to spend the rest of my life workin’ to make it up to you, to make sure you know how much you mean to me then I’ll work till I’m dead. I love you, so fuckin’ much and I-“

The words were cut by the squeezing of cheeks and the crashing of lips. Niki had grabbed Rinne’s face so abruptly that there was no time for reactions. He pulled Rinne close, knocking back against the wall without breaking apart. They stayed like that for a moment, the singular kiss lasting almost awkwardly before Niki pushed Rinne back. Their eyes met. They stared and stared, fires growing inside their chests. It was Niki who spoke first, breathlessly.

“Okay, I kissed you first… so, now it’s your-“

And this time it was Niki who was interrupted as Rinne closed the gap between them. Niki’s arms crossed around Rinne’s neck, his hands working their way into his hair as they kissed. It wasn’t just one collision being held for a moment, it was multiple movements as they peppered each others lips. It seemed that all it took for Rinne to gain confidence was for Niki to plant that first kiss because now he was compensating for lost time. He pulled Niki’s hips from the wall, leaving space for him to wrap his arms around and pull him closer. There were no complaints from the younger man, tilting his head into their kisses as they deepened. They moved slowly but passionately, tentatively parting their lips more as they became comfortable with the sensation. Their mouths were wet with the rain so it wasn’t as jarring when Niki took a chance to lick along Rinne’s lower lip, inviting him to go the whole way.

They indulged in one another for minutes, roaming hands and messy kisses that lacked coordination. It wasn’t perfect in the traditional sense, they were clumsy and inexperienced, bumping noses and breathing laughter each time they parted because of it. But that’s what made it perfect to them. It was so real, so full of love. It had been a long time coming and they were damned if they weren’t full of more joy than they ever thought possible.

It was Niki who pulled away, turning his head. Rinne didn’t want to stop, following and settling on kissing the exposed skin on his partner’s neck. Niki’s hands dropped to Rinne’s chest, shoving him away playfully. He was starting to feel weak at the knees - not just because his adrenaline was running so high but because he was so hungry he felt like he might not be able to make it to their apartment if they continued.

“Nahaha, Rinne-kun~ This is really fun but I might die if I don’t get something to eat, soooo…”

Rinne mumbled against the hungry chef’s neck, pecking kisses upwards to his cheeks. “One more.” He gently grabbed Niki’s cheeks between his thumb and fingers, turning his head so that their lips could meet once more. It was hard for Niki to be annoyed, even with his stomach starting to churn with hunger. He melted into the kiss, sighing through his nose as Rinne pulled back. They drunkenly smiled at each other. Wordlessly, they joined hands and pushed off from the wall, looking up to the dark clouds that were responsible for drenching them. They exchanged a knowing look, both taking off running hand in hand towards their apartment. Rinne ended up pulling Niki along, his complaints drowned out by footfalls on wet concrete and cackling.

When they made it inside they had no choice but to peel off their clothes, dry their bodies and get into something more comfortable. They had an array of loungewear in the bedroom so it wasn’t difficult to find something clean. Rinne made sure to help Niki dry his hair, noting how beautiful he looked when it was down. He wasn’t able to admire it for long as Niki tied it back into his signature ponytail for cooking. It was the same as any other night, really.

Niki was happily making them something delicious, his tongue sticking out to the side in concentration. Rinne, as always, came up behind to wrap his arms around the smaller’s waist, resting against his shoulder. It was difficult for him to resist kissing Niki so he had to settle with giving attention to his neck. Niki didn’t seem to mind, tilting his head to give his partner space. They were both beaming, living in a daze, unable to process the night. It was undeniable for them now, after all this time, after all of their charades…

Rinne Amagi and Niki Shiina were together and nothing was going to tear them apart.
