His face was twisted, like he was in pain. "No — nothing about this is convenient — do you think loving you is convenient?"
The silence was deafening. It filled up Lily’s heart with some impossible thing she’d long since forgotten, a thing that lived in the tall grass in her childhood home, in between the lines of poetry she’d scribbled to him and the tears she’d shed after the incident by the lake. It crashed over Lily, a realization so strong, so powerful that it nearly took her breath away. A tidal wave that caught her, crushed her with force as she struggled to contain it within herself.
“You… love me.” Lily said, sounding out each syllable, testing it on her tongue.
He would not look at her, now. “For a very long time.”
