Accent

Summary:

Alex Vesia can’t help expressing his fondness of Miguel Rojas’ accent in an unusual way.

Work Text:

Batgirl entered the kitchen of her palatial mansion, her cape trailing behind her. The familiar sound of dishes clinking greeted her as she spotted Miguel Rojas, her trusted housekeeper, loading the dishwasher.

"Miguel, where's my shirt?" Batgirl asked, her voice filled with urgency.

Miguel turned to face her, his hands still full of dishes. "Probably at the cleaner," he replied matter-of-factly.

"But today's the driving test. It's my most capable-looking outfit," Batgirl exclaimed, clearly frustrated by the situation.

Miguel paused for a moment, his brow furrowed. "Okay, I call them," he offered, putting down the dishes and reaching for a nearby spray bottle and cloth to clean the counter.

"It's too late now," Batgirl whined, feeling a pang of disappointment. "Oh, and we got another notice from the fire department saying we have to clear out the bush. You said you were gonna get José to do it."

Miguel's face tensed up, and his accent became more prominent as he responded, "He your gardener, why you don't tell him?"

Batgirl sighed, her frustration mounting. "Miguel, you know I don't speak Mexican," she said, unintentionally revealing her ignorance.

Angrily, Miguel put down the spray bottle and cloth, storming out of the kitchen. "I not a Mexican!" he exclaimed as he left, clearly hurt by Batgirl's comment.

Confused, Batgirl stayed behind, wondering what had just happened. Just then, Ant-Man, who had been lurking nearby, munching on a snack, approached her.

"Miguel's from Venezuela," Ant-Man explained, trying to shed some light on the situation.

Batgirl shrugged, still not fully understanding. "So?" she questioned.

Ant-Man shook his head, a wry smile on his face. "It's an entirely different country, Batgirl. People have different nationalities and identities."

"Are you done?" said Miguel in exasperation, his patience wearing thin.

It was all a playful reenactment orchestrated by Alex Vesia, a pitcher on the Dodgers baseball team, taking place in the dugout during a break in the game. He'd replaced the characters in a scene from the movie Clueless with their superhero counterparts played by the same actors in different movies, and the heavily-accented housekeeper with his teammate, the Dodgers' shortstop Miguel Rojas. Alex played all three characters in the scene, alternating between each of their line deliveries.

The real Miguel sat with his arms folded alongside his other teammates, enduring Alex's theatrical performance.

Alex grinned mischievously, unable to contain his amusement. "Aw, come on, man! I just couldn't help it! You know I love you, and your accent is adorable!" he exclaimed, teasingly.

J.D. Martinez, sitting beside Miguel, playfully nudged him. "Well, he's got you there, Miggy," J.D. said with a chuckle. "The way you talk is pretty damn cute."

Miguel directed his attention back to Alex. "What are you even doing here? Aren't you supposed to be warming up in the bullpen?" he asked, trying to redirect the conversation.

Alex waved off the statement dismissively, his playful demeanor still intact. He then turned and walked away, leaving Miguel and his teammates to continue their break, enjoying a moment of lighthearted banter amidst the intensity of the game.
