Work Text:
Izuku pulled on his gloves as he stood next to his two teammates. On his left he had Shinso and on his right was Momo. Not a bad team but across from him was the team he really wanted to be on. Katsuki Bakugo, longtime friend turned enemy turned rivals turned back to friends.
And for Izuku it gave one more turn... unrequited love.
He had to fall in love with Katsuki, didn’t he?
“Alright, hell spawn. You all have your teams and I except,” The tired dark eyes landed on Katsuki’s scowling face, “none of you to just do whatever you want. You’re a team. Out there in the real world, if you go off on your own, something could happen.
“That being said, stay with your team and work together.” Izuku nodded firmly when he met the dark eyes, “Now, you all will be looking for your own dummy that matched the wrist band on your wrist. If you encounter another team's dummy, you may have one person relay the message but only if you are a captain. Those are the ones with the black star on their band.” Great... that was him and from the looks of it, Katsuki too.
“You have one hour. Go.”
Izuku whirled around to his team, “Momo, can you create some trackers for us? I think if we split up just a little bit, we’ll cover more ground.”
“On it.” Momo said. She moved her hand to her forearm and her skin began to glow purple as three trackers appeared from her skin. “Here, and I have the main device.” He nodded.
Shinso took his tracker, pining it to his shirt. “I’ll take the left side and work my way up.”
“I’ll take the right!” Momo smiled happily.
“And that leaves me with the middle.” Izuku said. All three of them nodded and went their separate ways. Izuku forced One for All through his body until the faint crackling pierced his ears. There was nothing compared to the wind blowing in his curls as he ran to save someone. Even if it was a dummy. It was thrilling.
Spring was probably his favorite time of year. It wasn’t too hot that he soaked through his hero suit, but it wasn’t too cold that his joints didn’t ache as bad. The new flowers blooming around him were a sign of growth... healing. There was so much to heal from... not only the destruction.
He was lucky though.
Izuku had too many skeletons in his closet, and they thankfully stayed in the closet. The biggest one being his mom. Inko wasn’t a terrible mom. He knew it was him. His fault. The day he lay in the hospital bed and he explained how he was going to leave UA to keep his friends safe... he gave her an out too.
“I know you don’t like me. Hate would probably be a better word to use.” Izuku started as he stared down at his bandaged hands. “When I leave UA... that’s your out. You leave town, you can go to America for all I care but you can’t stay here.”
Inko huffed, rolling her eyes, “And what will you do without me, huh?” She sneered. She loved to rub it in her face that he needed her. That the only reason he got into UA was because she signed the forms.
“I’ll probably die in the war so it doesn’t matter.” He gritted out, “Take your out and leave me alone.”
Inko disappeared after that.
He lived in the dorms and sold most of his All Might merch to buy certain things. Sometimes he wondered if Katsuki noticed... they were friends again. Katsuki used to always pay when they were out as kids. Mitsuki made sure to give him extra money to spend on him and Katsuki was doing it again.
Just the other day, Izuku went to the store—okay, he was sneaking out to the store—and Katsuki happened to spot him. He asked to come which was odd but Izuku didn’t want to raise any suspicion so he said sure.
He only had money for deodorant and a bottle of three and wash shampoo. Katsuki scolded him flat out! Even smacked the bottle out of his hand. He grabbed Izuku some expensive shampoo plus conditioner for curly hair then paid for it!
“He wouldn’t know... right?” He mumbled as he jumped over a large log on the ground. “Surely if he did... Aizawa would know.”
There was no point in worrying about it now. He’d just need to lay low and pray Katsuki never finds out until he turns eighteen.
Only a few short months away.
Buzzzzz
Izuku whipped his head to the side, following the sound. A few feet away sat a very large beehive. Not only a beehive but bees were everywhere in the surrounding area. They must have thought this was a good quiet place with a bunch of flowers nearby.
“Shit.” He swore under his breath. Everything should be fine as long as he doesn’t get stung. Izuku slowed his steps and moved slightly to the left, away from the hive. “As long as nothing happens to make them feel...”
The ground rumbled violently under his feet. The tree branches shook around him almost like an Earthquake, but it was someone using their quirk most likely.
He couldn’t even think.
Izuku ran.
He forced his body to 75% and rushed up the hill away from the murdering bees. Holy crap! Why him?! That was just his luck! The buzzing only got louder and louder in his ears. Fuuuuuuck! He dove to the ground, grunting as he flipped onto his back and brought his hand up. “Airforce!” He flicked his fingers and sent the swarm of bees flying back to where they came from.
Clasping back onto the ground, he panted heavily. Izuku hated bees. Not because they stung him or anything but because he was deathly allergic. One small sting will cause his throat to close.
Buzzzzz Buzzzz
Izuku glanced around with his eyes as he stilled his body, but it didn’t matter. He felt the small sharp sting of the bee below his ear. He slapped at himself until he felt it smush under his palm, killing the insect on contact.
The only thing was... he was two seconds too late.
The reaction was almost instant. His body began to itch as his throat began to swell. Izuku struggled to pull in a normal size breath. Was he going to die here? He hadn’t had an EPI pen since he was a child... his mom couldn’t afford to get one, so he learned to stay the hell away from bees. Izuku pulled at the metal piece of his suit, yanking it off in one pull... because that was going to help him.
Was it sad that the only thing on his mind was a certain blonde? All the things they didn’t do—he didn’t say!
“K-Kachan...” He rasped. Lifting his shaking hand, he tapped his comms three times to get to the main line. “K-Kach—” He inhaled sharply—gasping for help. No! No! He wasn’t ready! Izuku clawed at his neck as his lungs began to burn for air.
He had to tell Katsuki he loved him.
He had to.
“Why the fuck am I always stuck with you two idiots?”
Kirishima grinned over at him, red eyes sparkling, “I know you’d rather be on Mido’s team but Aizawa said you’re the only one that can handle us.”
“That’s right!” Denki cheered, “We’re just that cool.”
“Cool isn’t the fucking word I’d use.” He grumbled and adjusted his gauntlets that weighed down his wrists slightly, “We fought in the fucking war. Why couldn’t we just be the duo we’re meant to damn well be!”
“Because you both are still preparing to be heroes?” Denki suggested with a shrug, “It’s kinda dumb to have you and Midoriya be in UA anymore... you both fought and saved everyone.”
It’s called healing. The nightmares, the PTSD that came with it or maybe the fact that he fucking died!? God, he may have had it bad but that was Izuku’s dad. Izuku had to kill his dad... Hound Dog explained it in better detail, but he wanted them to stay kids for as long as they could and heal.
Katsuki rolled his eyes. He was over this conversation. “All I’m fucking saying is Deku and I should be put together for everything.”
“Oh! Save that for when you propose to him!” Kirishima snarked.
Katsuki lifted his hand to blast the damn idiot in the face but a horse, broken voice hit his eardrum like an explosion.
“K-Kach—”
That was the fucking nerd. “Deku? What the fuck?” He said into the comms. He didn’t like who the shorter hero sounded. It was almost like... he couldn’t breathe. But they were in the middle of a rescue mission.
“K-Ka!”
Katsuki spun around, glancing through the trees for any sign of green curls. “Anyone have eyes on Deku?!” He shouted into the comms.
“No. We went separate ways.” Troll answered.
“He went straight up the path of out section.” Momo said quickly.
Motherfucker!
Katsuki shook his head in frustration. It sounded like the nerd couldn’t breathe! Did he swallow a pinecone like a fucking idiot... His eyes landed on the flowers a few feet away. “Fuck!” He hissed, “Deku is having an allergic reaction!” Katsuki instantly began running up the hill, “I need his location NOW!”
“Bakugo, what’s going on?” Aizawa asked. The man’s voice was firm but he could hear the concern underneath.
“Deku is severely allergic to fucking bees! He must have been stung!”
“Ground Zero is in charge of this mission and you will follow his orders. Hero Deku is top priority.”
Thank fuck for that man.
“Zero! He’s on north side of the hill about four miles from the starting point!” Katsuki pointed his hands to the ground and blasted himself into the air. He wasn’t going to waste anymore fucking time.
“You stay with me! You hear me shitty Deku!” He growled, “I swear to fuck I will kill you myself! You’re going to be the next number one hero and I promised to fucking get you there! It’s my job to take care of you! It’s my god damn fucking will to live to make sure you grow old!” Katsuki pushed his arms to the max. Blast after blast exploded off his sweaty palms, pushing him further and further.
After the war... and seeing Izuku. There was no life in those eyes. The war took a toll on all of them—he fucking died! But that didn’t matter to him. Izuku was always his personal sun... and all the bright, happy sunshine was gone.
Izuku felt personally responsible with every death. The city crumbling at just a touch of Shigaraki’s fingers. Everything sat heavy on his chest.
So, he vowed to keep that boy alive even if it killed him and no fucking bee sting was going to take out the next number one hero!
“I FOUND HIM!”
Katsuki tucked his arms to his sides as he dove straight for the teal patch sticking out against the green grass. Izuku was currently digging his heels into the ground, fingers weakly clawing at his throat. Shifting in the air, he let loose a small blast to break his fall and dropped to the ground.
“Fucking Deku!” He ran over to the nerd and dug into the zip pocket of his pants. “I thought I fucking told you no more almost death experiences!” He brought the EPI pen to his mouth. Biting off the cap, he knelt next to him and stabbed the pen in his thick thigh, pressing the button all in one go.
….
…
..
.
Izuku gasped, inhaling as much air as he could get into his body. The bewildered look in his eyes almost made him want to cry. Katsuki kept the pen in place in his thigh, but he brought his other hand up to his mess of green curls. He gave them a small tug in hopes of settling the nerd a bit.
“Why the fuck don’t you have one!?” He snarled. There was nothing but worry in his words. “You’re so fucking lucky.”
The emerald eyes stared at him, filling with tears, “K-Kachan...” He whispered, still trying everything to get oxygen back into his body.
“Shut it.” He already knew why the nerd didn’t have one... well it confirmed everything. “I already know and I’m not letting you continue this shit.”
It didn’t take long for Aizawa to swoop in next to them, kneeling on the other side of Izuku. “Problem child, why wasn’t this on your forms?”
Before Izuku could even open his mouth, Katsuki spoke, “Because he can’t afford the shit since his mom was a piece of shit. Hasn’t been around for months—hasn't taken care of him for years.” Aizawa’s eyes darkened to the shade he only saw when they were fighting Crusty Hands.
“We will talk about this later but right now you need a hospital.” Izuku whined loudly, flaring his nose at the thought. “I’m taking you into my custody starting now.”
Izuku deflated into the dirt and focused on breathing. It didn’t take long before Momo appeared and started to create a stretcher for him. Katsuki jerked his chin at the redhead and got up to take his place in front of Izuku’s head.
“You just wait until fucking Auntie hears all the shit I know.” He whispered once Izuku’s head was sitting right below his stomach. “She’ll beat your ass for the first time.”
The first thing Izuku noticed when woke up was a very warm hand wrapped around his scarred one and the light sound of snoring.
“Problem child.”
Maybe if I don’t look, he’ll go away.
Aizawa walked up to the empty chair on the other side of the bed and sat down. “Want to explain why your mother is nowhere to be found?”
There was no point in lying or trying to hide it anymore... “I... she hated me s-so when I left UA... I-I gave her an out. Told her to leave and never come back...” He frowned a little, “I don’t know where she is.”
The hero nodded, “Bakugo said he’s noticed a lot of things. Not enough money for food, essentials or fun. You are still a child, Izuku.”
“I lived quirkless for ten years... you don’t have a choice but to grow up.”
Aizawa leaned forward towards him and dropped a hand on his knee, “Well, it’s done now. You saved the world, Izuku. You did so much for all of us that now it’s time we took care of you. Bakugo already gave me his blessing to take you into my care. There’s plenty of other options but—”
“N-No.” He croaked with tears pooling in his eyes, “I-I want that. I-I want to go home with you.”
Katsuki shot his head up at his loud cry. The teen glanced around, ready for a fight but once he noticed the room was clear, he calmed down. “Why the fuck are you crying?!”
“Z-Zawa’s taking me h-home!”
He shook his head, scowling, “Well, fucking duh! It was that or come live with me but the hag said we’d have too much sex so that was the last resort.”
“Kachan!”
Katsuki smirked, “I saved your life, Zuku, and the only way to repay me is by becoming my boyfriend. Go ahead, try and say no.”
Izuku’s smile wobbled as he shook his head a little, “I’d never say no!” Aizawa sighed next to him and stood from his chair. “Zawa!”
“I’ll come back after you both are done being disgusting.”
He couldn’t help but giggle as Katsuki smirked wickedly next to him, “Can’t wait to call you my father in law.” Izuku smacked his arm lightly, “What?! You think you’re too good to marry me, nerd!? I’m going to put a ring on that finger the first chance I get!”
Yeah... it was a love bug.
