Work Text:
She hated mornings. Selen always wondered who had the so amazing idea to start everything so early. If she could meet them she would probably deck them in the face, but that's beside the point. Mornings means a new day, so everyone should be getting enough sleep instead of waking up early from a almost sleepless night. If they even slept.
She hears her alarm start and lets it ring for a few more minutes until she hears it stop.
"Get up." A very familiar voice commanded her.
She can't help but groan at the voice of her older sister. "A few more minutes, Eliraaaa." She wanted to sleep more.
"We're gonna be late, don't you want see Pomu at the cafe?" She immediately jolts up and can't help but look at Elira in astonishment.
"What- That's- No. I don't like Pomu, Elira. That's like breaking the Sister Code." Selen feels her cheeks growing redder as she tried to explain.
Elira just lifts an eyebrow in amusement and laughs. "If you say so and since you're already up, maybe get ready so we can go get breakfast?"
Selen groans again. Elira really knew what to say to wake her up. Why is she so easy when it comes to Pomu Rainpuff? Thinking about it makes her groan for the third time today. See, it's only 7 am and she's groaned three times already. Truly an amazing morning.
They arrive at the Diamond Lights café at around 7:30, so they still have an hour until class starts so Selen lines up to order their breakfast.
"Selen, about Pomu..." Selen snaps to the left to face her sister. About to start denying the truth, Elira puts a finger up her lips making Selen close her mouth and let her continue her sentence.
"It's fine if you like her. It's been 2 years, Selen. I wouldn't hate you for it. So if you do like her. Then do what your heart tells you." Selen sees a small smile on her sisters face before she arrives in front of the counter and orders her breakfast.
Selen can't help but think about what her older sister said about her feelings for Pomu. She was now sitting alone at a table in the café. Elira left her saying she needed to meet some classmates and that she need to 'shoot her shot' or something along those lines.
It's almost 8 am and Pomu usually arrived at around that time. Selen really doesn't know what to do. Just because it's been 2 years doesn't mean that she should in any way pursue Pomu. Ugh, this is why Selen hates feelings. It makes her head hurt and makes her feel weird. If only she didn't start liking her, if only she wasn't so cute, if only she wasn't so amazing at everything she did, if only Elira-
"Selen? Hello? Earth to Selen?" She sees hands waving in front of her.
Speak of the devil.
"Oh." Was what she only responded with making her mentally pace falm. Nice one, Selen Tatsuki.
"Is this seat taken?" She asks with a giggle, seeing Selen spaced out was rare.
Selen blinks twice and finally snaps out of it.
"Oh, hey Pomu!" and an awkward pause before processing the girls question.
Then a smirk makes it onto Selen's face. "As you can see someone is definitely sitting in front of me, even drinking coffee." Pomu rolls her eyes.
Her lips quivering as she answers back with a gasp. "How dare I almost sit on this invisible person!" She responds pointing on the seat next to her, which in return makes the younger girl laugh.
Selen laughs heartily, people in the café could see it. How Selen Tatsuki was laughing at jokes that weren't even that funny.
Selen misses the sadness in Pomu's eyes.
After a full minute of Selen laughing, Pomu finally asks. "Can I sit here?" with Selen nodding as her response.
Selen is still chuckling when Pomu finally sits down and Selen feels her breathe get taken away as she sees her properly today. Her big amber eyes that she could get lost in forever, her favorite green bow which is tied to her beautiful flowing hair that she knows Pomu has always worn since they met, lastly her cute pointy ears that turn red when she blushes. Selen was glad she could see them. The best thing was the fact that her looks aren't the only things that's beautiful about her.
Pomu Rainpuff is one of the kindest persons she's ever met. Pomu can be quite chaotic, not that Selen didn't like that, but sometimes the chaos can lead into people being hurt and Pomu never lets it get to that point. She always puts people before herself and Selen finds that quite admirable.
Selen watches her eat with a smile on her face. Watches as Pomu eats her croissants happily and lets her finish up before striking a conversation.
"So, Pomu anything new in life?" Selen asks leaning over the table, tucking her hand under her chin.
"Oh, you know the usual stress of almost finishing college. Nothing really new, Selen." She answers with a chuckle.
"Really? Nothing new?" Oh she was going to regret this. "Noone new?"
Selen immediately regretted asking the question as she saw a glint of sadness in Pomu's eyes that was quickly hidden with a small laugh.
"Well, there is someone. I'm not sure if I should do anything about it, because it might be quite... unethical." The last word made Selen raise an eyebrow.
Feigning shocked, Selen gasps. "Pomu Rainpuff do you have feelings for someone who is in a relationship?" She means it as a joke and honestly hopes that's not the case.
To her relief Pomu lightly hits her on the shoulder. "Of course not!" Pomu shakes her head. "Not that having feelings for someone in a relationship is something you can help. My situation is just... complicated." Selen finds herself sucked into those Amber eyes that looks at her like... no. That's impossible. She just hopes it's not who she thinks it is.
So she does something that she might just regret.
"Hey, you can't help what you feel, okay? If you have feelings for a person go for it. Don't let me or anyone else stop you."
Selen watches as the love of her life's eyes start to glisten.
"It's alright, Pomu." Reaching over she gives her a soft pat on the head.
"Thank you, Selen." She answers softly wiping the continuous tears from her eyes and then softly laughs. "It's 8 in the morning, I did not expect my day to start with crying." Selen laughs with her, to ease the tension.
After a few minutes, Pomu calms down.
"Im just going to the bathroom real quick and we can start walking to our classes." She informs Pomu.
"Yup, of course. Take your time, Selen."
So Selen walks to the bathroom and locks the door.
Facing the mirror, she starts shaking and tears start falling from her eyes.
"Ah."
What did Pomu say? She didn't expect to start the day with crying? If so, neither did Selen.
Selen didn't expect to do anything after her classes. She planned to go straight home when a certain blonde appeared in her sights as soon as she stepped outside of her classroom.
"Pomu? What are you doing here?" She asked the girl leaning on the wall next to the classroom door.
Pomu who apparently didn't see her, immediately turned to the source of the voice.
"Selen! You're here! Uhh, I just wanted to ask you something." The older girl was fidgeting.
"Sure?" Selen was confused, why was Pomu fidgeting from asking a question.
"Do you have time later? Do you maybe want to go out?" Oh.
No Selen, she does not mean it that way. Obviously she means it as friends just hanging out.
"Sure, I'm free. Where are we going?" Selen accepts the invitation, it's Pomu after all.
"I'll tell you on our way there." She says taking Selens hand and starts dragging her to what Selen is going to assume is the subways.
Selen could feel the heat running up her face the longer they walked, she could also see Pomu's ears going bright red. Well, atleast she wasn't alone.
When they finally arrived at the subway and got on it, both of them finds a seat and Pomu finally (unfortunately) lets go.
Selen takes her phone out and sends Elira a quick message telling her that she'll be going home late.
"So Miss Last Year of College is stressful, where do you get the time for what we're doing?" She asks with the usual playfulness in her voice.
"Obviously, I need to de-stress. What better place than to where we're going?"
"And where exactly are we going?" As Pomu opens her mouth Selen immediately adds another question. "Oh no, Miss Pomu Rainpuff. Don't tell me you're trafficking me?" She covers her mouth acting shocked, successfully hiding the smile on her face, but not masking her giggle.
"Why do I keep up with you?" A simple question.
I wonder how Selen could answer with the worst.
"Because you love me~" Selen couldn't stop the words from coming out of her mouth.
The answer makes Pomu's ears go full red and like the gods were on her side the station that they needed to stop at was there.
"W-We're here!" She quickly stands up and Selen just as red follows her.
The awkward silence hurts. So Selen tries again.
"So where are we going?" She asks looking everywhere but the person next to her.
"The arcade. It's been a while since I played here." She answers as they walk.
They both arrive at the place a few minutes later. The awkwardness still there, but not as bad as before.
"I'll buy the coins. Which one do we play first?" Pomu asks, grabbing her wallet and pays for the a stack of coins.
Selen looks around and finds the perfect game to ease the tension. Then with a smirk she suggests, "What about Tekken?"
"Oh, I see you, Selen Tatsuki. Our rivalry will finally finish tonight, when I beat you!"
God she's so cute.
"In your dreams, Rainpuff." She sits down with Pomu right next to her.
They both pick their characters. Selen chooses Lars, while Pomu chooses Alisa.
"Oh? New pick, Pomu? Tired of our 'Unlucky' Chloe losing when she's with you."
"Let's just start!" She answers with a glare.
They burn through halfway of the coins with Pomu winning some rounds, but never completely winning the game.
Selen lets out another breathless laugh as Pomu loses another game. "Don't you think it's time to play other games? We've been playing this game for a while now."
She faces Pomu and laughs as Pomu shakes her head. "No. We only finish until I beat you." Wow and Selen thought she was competitive.
Selen lets out another chuckle as another game start. "If you say so."
As Selen expected Pomu never won a match and was sulking when they left the arcade.
"Did you atleast have fun?" Selen asked scratching her head, Pomu looks cute when she's pouting.
"Well..."
"Well?"
"I did win some rounds and destress. So of course I did."
"Of course."
"You were with me the whole time and it's always fun when I'm with you."
Selen liked that.
"We could just be talking the whole day and it would make me happy, Selen."
"Really?"
"Of course. You make me happy, Selen."
Uh oh. Selen was really in deep trouble.
"Pomu...I..."
"Let's go to your house and then we can talk, okay?"
Selen knew what was coming.
It was inevitable.
"Okay."
So there they were sitting on the living room couch.
The silence was defeaning.
So Selen tries cutting it off.
"Pomu, we really don't need to talk about anything."
Then there was a glare, then those glaring eyes turned soft.
"Are you really going to act like nothings going on? Between us?"
There it was.
"Pomu, please. We can't- No. We can't do this to Elira."
She couldn't do this to her sister.
"Selen, please. I can't do this anymore."
A pause.
"I love you."
"No. We can't-"
Pomu stands up to get closer.
"Selen, I know."
No. No. Pomu shouldn't know.
"I know you still act like she's here with us."
Warmth surrounds her body.
"I know you still buy her favorite drink everyday, hoping that one day she'll show up and drink it."
A sob leaves her mouth as she's held tighter in Pomu's arms.
"I know you still message her when you're outside, hoping for her to respond."
She was now shaking.
"I know that you're trying to act like everything's normal when it isn't."
Pomu's shirt was drenched in her tears.
"I know that you sometimes blame yourself for what happened."
Selen couldn't breathe.
There she was in Pomu's arms, being caressed and comforted until she calmed down.
When Selen finally went quiet, Pomu tears herself away but keeps a close distance with the younger woman.
"Selen, please. I need you to face the truth."
Then Selen saw.
She saw Pomu Rainpuff, tears were in her eyes.
Pomu was also hurt.
"It hurts, I- I know. Something like this will never heal completely. We lost someone dear to us. In the- the most unexpected way."
Tears were now falling continuously through Pomu's cheeks.
"It's unfair I know, but we need to continue living our lives. To...To accept the truth."
"You need to accept that she's gone, Selen."
How could she be so selfish?
"I need time."
Pomu closes her eyes and nods.
She wipes her cheeks and with a sad smile, she whispers "Take all the time you need."
At the end of the day Selen was in her bed, hugging her pillow as she cried.
Trying to face the inevitable truth.
Her sister was gone and she was never coming back.
