Work Text:
Johnathan keeps looking over at Argyle while his attention is on the stars outside. He watches his best friend's side profile in the faint light of the evening and he feels that spark he's become all too familiar with recently when he's around him. He chews on his bottom lip nervously, watching Argyle's lips wrap around the joint.
His lips look so soft, and they're such a pretty shade, it's like they're raspberry kissed. He thinks to himself, before shaking away the thought.
"Hey, bro you want this back or not?" Argyle's voice snaps him out of it. He finally notices that he's been holding the joint out for him to take back.
"Shit, sorry man, yeah, yeah." He mutters, grabbing it clumsily. He closes his eyes bringing it nearly to his lips, pausing for the briefest moment before placing it between them and inhaling. He wishes these thoughts would fade with the cloud of smoke he produces, but no such luck.
"Can…can I ask you something?" He says quietly, coughing a couple times. He doesn't dare spare a glance over to Argyle, his stomach full of nerves.
"Hit me."
"H-have you ever…kissed someone you're friends with?" Johnathan's voice is shaky as he asks.
Argyle's brow furrows for a second, wondering where this had come from. He takes a moment though to think about it, and shrugs.
"Yeah, lots of times." He hums reaching his hand out for Johnathan to pass the joint back. "I mean we used to play spin the bottle and shit like that at parties all the time."
Johnathan nods quietly. That wasn't exactly the same as what he was thinking about, but…
"You crushin' on someone, man?" Argyle laughs, puffs of smoke escaping with each word. He wraps an arm around Johnathan's shoulders and ruffles his hair with the other hand. A blush starts to form on his cheeks and he shrinks into himself trying to duck out of Argyle's grasp.
"No-no, it's not…no I just… " He sputters before going quiet. "I don't know why I asked, just forget it." He sighs.
Argyle's face softens and he loosens his arm around the other boy but doesn't let go completely.
"It's okay if you do, you know I'm your boy. You can talk to me about anything I prommy."
"Yeah, I know." He says, his voice soft. It's quiet in the van for a while, the only sounds are the crashing of the nearby waves, Argyle's mixed tape playing quietly through the speakers and cars driving in the distance.
"You good, brochacho?" He questions, taking notice of his sudden change in demeanor.
He runs a hand through his hair and over his face, staying quiet for longer. He doesn't know what to say as he turns to look at Argyle again for the first time in several minutes. He can't tell him that it's him he's thinking about kissing because if he ever found out it would make Johnathan want to disappear forever.
"Yeah, I'm just thinking too much." Is his response, reaching his hand out again, and taking another hit.
"Have you ever kissed someone you're friends with?" Argyle asks after another few moments of silence and it leaves Johnathan coughing around puffs of smoke, his eyes bulging.
"No!" Johnathan wheezes, shifting away from Argyle slightly. He hadn't thought Argyle would turn the tables on him like that.
"Well yeah, I-I guess Nancy and I were just friends the first time we kissed." He admits after taking a second to think about it.
"That's it?"
"She was my first kiss." He admits sheepishly. "Everyone since then has been like random hook-ups."
"Damn…that's wild." He clicks his tongue.
The topic drops off as another silence fills the van and Johnathan stares out at the ocean trying his best to take his mind off of the boy sitting beside him. Off of the fact that the joint currently placed between his lips has also been in Argyle's. They've shared joints like this more times than he can count but tonight he's hyper aware of it.
Okay that was definitely not taking his mind off of things. He lets out a long sigh and reaches for his camera. He needs space to clear his head.
"I'll be back." He says quickly, scrambling out of the van and onto the beach. He walks down the sand to the water's edge, and sits down grasping his camera like a child does their security blanket.
He hates these feelings, they confuse him and scare him all at the same time. It wasn't the first time he had felt this way about another guy before, of course there had been Steve, but that was something he would take to his grave. There were others too, but it wasn't something he ever thought he could act on, he would be rejected instantly, of that he was sure.
He looks up when he feels the sand shift beside him. Argyle has plopped down next to him, a carefree smile plastered to his face. His eyes are glossy with the all too familiar look of being baked.
"I don't wanna be all alone, man, and you shouldn't be either." He hums, giving him a fake punch on the arm. Johnathan rolls his eyes, a small smile curving his lips. "Ah, so you do know how to smile."
"Yeah, it's a shocker I know." Johnathan laughs tightly.
Argyle rests his head on his shoulder and he feels himself tense for a second before relaxing into the touch. This is fine. He thinks to himself.
"It's really beautiful out here tonight." Argyle quickly switches the conversation, his eyes gazing up at the sky, twinkling with thousands of stars. "Like prettier than usual."
"I think that's the Purple Haze talking." Johnathan wheezes, looking beside him out of his peripheral vision.
"You look pretty tonight, bro." Argyle giggles, nuzzling under his chin. Johnathan's heartbeat quickens and he holds in a breath, eyes fluttering closed.
"Now I know that's the Purple Haze talking." He breaths, his cheeks perfectly rosy now.
"No, I'm serious, like if you could see yourself right now I bet you'd say the same thing."
"I'm not so sure, but I'll-uh-I'll take your word for it." He laughs awkwardly. He turns to look at Argyle better though and their eyes meet. He feels that fizzing feeling starting up in his stomach again and just as he's about to turn away, Argyle reaches out a hand to cup the side of his face.
It happens so fast he doesn't know what else to do, Argyle's lips are on his and he's kissing him back.
He pulls back for a brief second for air before going in for another and this prompts Argyle to gently reposition them. He lays Johnathan back in the sand, crawling over him to deepen the kiss. Johnathan lets out a soft moan into Argyle's mouth and the other boy grins into the kiss.
"You know, if you'd have asked me if I wanted to kiss you…I would have said yes." Argyle says with a smirk, having come up for air again. He averts his gaze, feeling bashful and excited all at the same time.
Was this really happening? If he pinched himself right now would he wake up and all of this was just a dream?
The tickle of Argyle's long hair brushing his cheeks-drawing his attention back to the gorgeous man kneeling over him-convinces him this is all real. He giggles to himself, smiling up at Arg, leaning up to brush their lips together again.
"I-uh-I guess I never thought it was even an option." Johnathan admits quietly, his lips still just inches away from Argyle's.
"I've been hoping you'd say something for ages, bro." There's nothing but sincerity in his voice and Johnathan shakes his head, his smile gets even bigger.
"I'm glad you took the initiative."
"Me too, because if I hadn't we'd have been doing that whole cheesy will-they-won't-they thing for forever." He laughs brushing a hand over the flush burning the other man's cheek. "That shit is so corny, I couldn't take it anymore."
Johnathan just laughs silently. His eyes closing as he takes in this moment, replaying it over in his mind a few times, the smile never leaving his face. Grabbing a strand of Arg's hair he starts playing with it absentmindedly.
"So, I guess now I'm just wondering, what does this mean… for us?" He asks.
"That's easy, we get to keep doing this… " Argyle leans down, capturing his lips again, teeth nipping his bottom lip teasingly. "As much as we want."
"Well y-yeah, but like you know what I mean." Johnathan says shakily. His eyes are wide with curiosity and nerves.
"We don't have to label anything right now, let's just enjoy this, yeah?" Argyle hums, looking Johnathan in the eyes, a tender smile curving his lips. Johnathan just smiles and nods in agreement. "Now come up here and kiss me again, bruh."
So he does.
