“You want to date me. Is that it?” Grian’s voice is hauntingly flat, devoid of emotion.
Mumbo scrambles to pick out a tell like a magician blindly rooting through a top hat, his eyes rove over the desolate expression Grian gives him, praying for anything to give away that this is a tease. He doesn’t know what to say. Yes, commitment would put his nerves to rest. Yes, it would solve all of Mumbo’s problems.
Something coiled must show on his face, his musing giving him away, because Grian scoffs. He looks properly cross now. A gnawing fear rises dangerously fast in Mumbo’s gut under Grian’s scalding gaze.
“You do,” he says. It lands like an accusation.
