Now, alongside the chronic pain he's lived with for his entire life, Dean also has to deal with Sam knowing about it. Trying to fix it.
And Cas... well, Cas is doing his angel thing. Which Dean doesn't really have the energy to figure out on top of everything else.

David was surrounded by tools and taxidermy. What a creative place to dump a body. He scoffed, wondering what exactly the Emersons were planning to do with the rest of the bodies—the actual dead ones. He closed his eyes and reached out, but something felt different. The dark cloud that hovered over his connection to the rest of the pack was gone.
For the first time in a very long time, he felt clarity. Of all the possibilities in the world, it was the Emersons who had finally dealt with Max.

After May’s death, he’d taken it seriously, he’d kept people at arm’s length, avoided getting too close, convinced that if he didn’t, no one else would end up hurt because of him.
And yet here he was, crouched over an injured Avenge, or at least someone dressed like one, in a filthy New York alley, bleeding and barely conscious. “Parker Luck” apparently had a way of laughing in his face.
