Work Text:

"In the letter, the unsub refers to 'your Artemis.' What does that mean?" Emily asked, looking between Spencer and the victim, a young brunette kid.

"Artemis is the Greek Goddess of the Hunt, also known as the Maiden Goddess, and more commonly known as the Goddess of the Moon," Spencer said without hesitation.

The kid nodded in agreement, opening his mouth to add on before Emily could interject again. "My friend is my Artemis. The Artemis to my Apollo," he clarified. At Emily's blank stare, he continued. "Artemis and Apollo are twins. Apollo is the God of the Sun, as well as many other things including Music and Healing."

There was a silence that was broken by JJ. "Oh my God, there are two of them."

Spencer blushed, although the kid didn't seem to get what JJ was saying, merely staring with furrowed brows.

"The letter also refers to Achilles and Patroclus. Is that also referencing your friend?" Hotch asked, but Spencer shook his head before the victim could respond.

"No, Achilles and Patroclus were lovers. It's a love story that was literally fated to have a tragic ending," Spencer said with a chuckle.

While the rest of the team stared blankly, the kid laughed at the joke and Spencer gave a triumphant grin.

"It's one of my favorites. I got my friend to read The Song of Achilles, which is-"

"-based on the myth, yeah!" Spencer interrupted, nodding along. "I read that, it's really well-written. Technically, in original myths, Patroclus is known as 'Achilles' companion,' but I admired how Madeline Miller interpreted it!"

As the kid opened his mouth to agree, Derek spoke. "Y'all know there's been a murder, right? You or your friend could be next?" he said with a face of utter confusion.

Hotch was staring with a blank face. JJ looked slightly confused, and Emily had her lips pursed in an attempt to hide her amusement.

"Right, so we'll need to know more about your friend. Their name, location, contact information," Spencer said, "and are you two... Artemis and Apollo or Achilles and Patroclus?"

"I'm sorry, can we please ask questions that everyone understands?" JJ asked, and Spencer frowned.

"We just explained those references," he muttered, ignoring the glare JJ shot his way in response.
