webby's flies

Summary:

a poem imagining what it would be like if webby had her own version of sniggles

Notes:

A trade with Sonnet. I wrote a poem based on their Webby makeup look, and they wrote a response to my poem for Emma Perkins.

Work Text:

webby has her little flies,
her little guys, her little spies
who flit around the black and white
and land on all that's rotten

webby's flies have mirror eyes,
they're bigger eyes, and clearer eyes
to see through walls and see-through lies
and all the lords have gotten

and all the precious little mites
all sail out on their silver kites
they're riding on the buzzing of the ley lines in the air
and every plan from every man
who plans just like her brothers can
is carried by her little flies right back into her lair

for webby's web has stringy strings
and sticky strings and stingy strings
and only those who know these things
can enter safe and sound

so hannah strums her worried songs
of buried throngs and lurid prongs
and that's how she knows all these wrongs,
they follow her around

she gets the news from webby's lights
in little bites and little sights.
you can't expect an insect to remember more than eight,
so every word from every lord
is so compressed that they distort
and hannah only solves the puzzle when it is too late.

and webby weeps, for webby keeps
all of her pets and all her peeps
and every name the reaper reaps
is written in her whitework.

see, mortals cannot see or fly,
and mortals lie, and mortals die.
it's neither fun nor light work

and webby hears the little dears
cry silken tears and silver tears
the dew upon her warp and weft for every fallen friend
but webby never leaves, she weaves
her tricks right up her webby sleeves
her shuttle's sharp, it flies from end to end, to end, to end.

webby has a thousand flies
and webby's had a thousand lives
and webby's told a thousand lies
and webby's pet does not survive
they're doomed once she adopts them

but someone must defy the five
so webby sends a thousand flies
and webby takes a thousand tries
she'll face a thousand nightmare times
if that is how she stops them
