Work Text:

Sig was in trouble.

After nearly a year of adventuring the world with Amitie, exploring the ruins of civilizations long past and finding bugs long forgotten, he had finally found a situation he didn’t know he could make it out of unscathed.

Normally, he felt safe with Amitie. The girl he-- well, he’d normally start blushing and clam up when he had to say he liked her, but the two didn’t need to speak to understand the other and had been going out for the past while. By his girlfriend’s side, Sig had no need to panic or worry.

It helped that the incident which caused most everyone’s exodus from Primp Town had revealed Amitie was a goddess, incredibly powerful, and could give quite fluffy hugs with her wings. Very few things could frighten you when the one by your side could summon a meteor shower of puyo.

But now here Sig was, Amitie by his side and yet still off balance. Why? Because tonight was cold, Amitie was asleep, and she was hogging all of the blankets . After almost a whole year, Sig hadn’t bothered to tell her what she did in her sleep and now it was coming back to kick him in the butt. And it wasn’t like he could just wake her up, either. Just one look at her, with her ruffled hair and drool running down her cheek as she snored, was enough to convince the boy that disturbing the masterpiece that was her sleeping form wasn’t an option.

This was their first winter traveling together and the first time the cold was becoming unbearable. Even sleeping in his coat wasn’t enough. The outdoors were too cold and their tent too thin. He needed the warmth that came from sharing a blanket; the mixing of body heat into one that soothed them both. But here Sig was, blanketless and alone as he curled into himself beside Amitie.

Then, a sudden movement.

Amitie tossed and turned in her sleep. With a quick twist, Amitie wound up with her back to Sig and her wings poking at his sides. But with this came an idea. Gently, Sig poked at one of her wings. Amitie did not stir and so Sig continued, unfolding them both until they spread wide behind her. Wide enough for Sig to drape over himself.

They were long and fluffy and perfectly Amitie. It was as if he was blanketed by Amitie herself. Her warmth and love manifested in the softness of a feathery sea. Soon, Sig found himself drifting into the unconscious.

But, just as he was about to finally lose himself, Amitie sneezed in her sleep. Her body jerking from it, her wings retracted and she turned to face him, stranding Sig back in the cold.

Sig huffed and watched the breath he let out dissipate. Perhaps tonight just wasn’t his night.

And then, a feeling. A hand gripping his shoulder, an arm latching over his body. Sig turned to find Amitie, still asleep but reaching out for him and gripping him in a hug like a stuffed animal that warded off bad dreams. That, or even in her dreams she could feel Sig beside her and knew to comfort him.

Hugging him close, the natural warmth granted to her by the goddess’s soul she possessed washed over him. It wasn’t like laying under a blanket, it was more akin to resting beside his beloved in a field on a warm, sunny day.

If he couldn’t have a blanket, then this was fine. Quite possibly it was even better.
