Not a Date

Work Text:

Something was weighing on Sig’s mind. It started when Klug had said something offhandedly. Then Lidelle managed to compound the thought when she said she ‘knew’ he’d be busy today.

Now he was here, sharing the Lover’s Milkshake Special with Amitie. Two straws, one milkshake. At least two-thirds of it was going to Amitie since he was drinking so slowly. He decided letting her have it all was worth it if he could take his mouth off the straw and slowly ask, “Is this a date?”

Amitie cocked an eyebrow as she finished the drink. “What makes you think that?”

“Klug said we were ‘lovebirds’, even though that’s not a type of bird. I think. And then Lidelle said we always go on dates on Wednesdays. And today is Wednesday.”

“Friend dates, sure. It’s just the day we hang out.”

Sig nodded. It made sense. But something else didn’t. “Why did we get the milkshape with the heart-shape straws?”

Amitie grinned in the same way an evil genius, or a teenage girl who thought herself as one, would. “This might not be a date, but the people running the sale don’t need to know that.”

The logic checked out. Amitie didn’t seem nervous, which was pretty tell-tale since she got all blushy and stammering when trying to keep something from him. Therefore the two were on the same page and this was, absolutely, not a date in either of their minds.

Which was wrong.

In truth, Amitie’s nervousness had reached a point that it looped back around to looking calm, though her nerves were wrecking her internally.

Inside, Amitie wished this was a date. Of course she would. She had liked Sig for the longest time now, the crush growing from their friendship and them always being able to rely on each other. But Sig never seemed to show an interest in romance, especially not with her. And she could easily read his face, unlike how everyone else somehow couldn’t. No hint of a crush ever surfaced, so she had resigned herself to these friend dates being the best she’d ever get.

“That’s sad,” Sig said, breaking Amitie’s internal self pity. “It would be nice going out with you.”

Amitie stopped. Not just thinking or breathing. For a moment in time, the world moved on without Amitie and seconds later she fast forwarded to the present, her mouth agape and brain broken.

“You what.” She managed.

Sig looked away. He did that when he was embarrassed. “It’s fun. Hanging out with you. But you know that. It’s always on my face.”

Ah . A squeak echoed through Amitie. So, if she couldn’t see any change on his face when he was thinking of a crush on her and that face was on whenever he was around her, then--

Amitie blushed and looked away. “Okay,” she said in a strained voice. “Let’s call this a date, then.”

And, though the two were avoiding the other’s gazes. Their hands managed to find each other.
