Chapter 1: feeling better now

Chapter Text

“Here, what about this?” You called Hyunjin, who was watching a video of your previous move that just didn’t seem to hit right. Following the music, you tried a different pose instead. “It’s better for the timing, but I don’t know how you’d transition to the next part.” He answered, wiping sweat off his forehead. You both had been adjusting the choreo for about 3 hours now.

You two were assigned the lead producers for your college’s upcoming showcase, a role you equally worked hard for to earn. To say you had a lot on your plate was an understatement.

Well, it wasn’t really that the plate was full…More like it was dropped and put back together with washi tape and a dream.

“I hate that you’re right,” You sighed dejectedly, shifting your hands onto your knees to catch your breath.

While you both were prepared for the complications…It wouldn’t be so frustrating if you didn’t know that it was so preventable. The freshmen lacked the technical capabilities to learn the dance, understandable of course; but that didn’t make it hurt any less when it took extra time out of both of your schedules to teach them. Especially yours, since the dance department was extra full of girls, and the dance with gender-specific parts to teach.

Your fellow seniors, however, were apparently immune to the anxiety of meeting time crunches by this point, and were taking their sweet time learning the moves. It was all the more infuriating that these were people you knew were capable with the right motivation, but held back out of the relief that they’ll “graduate anyways”.

You and Hyunjin said to hell with that mindset. If you two were going to graduate from the most fantastically hellish years of your life, you were going to do it with style; and together. So despite the effort, time, and what felt like your soul sacrifice, you both gave your 100% into auditioning, practicing, and preparing anyway.

So, the only solution to both problems was to adjust their parts respectively, despite the finished dance being done for months now and with the final performance only being a month away. This was the easy part though, choreographing came naturally to both of you, thankfully.

Didn’t make it any less stressful though.

“God I just-’ You spat in annoyance. “Why are we doing this to ourselves?!”

“Doing what?” He turned up to face you.

“Making it easier for them while we have to bust our asses off!” Your voice cracked as you flung your hands in the air. Tears were forming, and Hyunjin didn’t have to be close to tell. He walked over and placed an arm around your shoulder, massaging your back through your dampened shirt.

“I feel like I’ve hit a wall,” You sniffled into your hands, “The deadline is so soon and I- It- It doesn’t feel good enough.”

“Hey,” He began, pulling you to face him as he embraced you in a tight hug. “You’ve made it this far. When you spent all those nights cooped up here to practice, you didn’t doubt yourself or your abilities once. Why start now?”

“B-Because-“

“There is no because,” He insisted, “You’ve proven more than enough times that you’re capable not only with your dancing, but with your leadership too, that you’re more than fit for this. And if you’re not, that’s why this is a two person job.” He paused, taking the opportunity to run a hand through your hair. “That’s why I have no doubt that you…we…can do this.”

“...Thank you.” You sniffled, looking up to the brunette who gave you a reassuring smile.. “I’m feeling better now. Let’s get back to that last-”

“Nuh uh,” He cut you off, pulling you back into the hug. “No point in throwing out random ideas if nothing’s gonna stick. You need to refresh your mind, young lady.” He grabbed your hand, leading you out of the practice room.

“Where are we going?”

“Guess we’ll find out!” He beams from ahead, and you can just hear the shit-eating grin on his face. The thought of it makes you snicker.

“What’s so funny?” He turns to you, walking backwards now.

“It’s nothing, I-”

As you two neared the end of the hall and the exit of the building, the loud sound of water crashing onto the metal awning outside cut your sentence short. You looked out the small windows of the door. It wasn’t just raining, it was pouring.

“Was this part of your plan?” You turned to him, shooting him a glare. He took a long, deep breath, clearly trying to figure out what the hell to do now.

That was until he grabbed your hand again, “It is now!” and opened the door outside with no hesitation.

“HEY!-” You scowled, pulling against his grip. But his of course, was stronger. Would he really be your boyfriend if he didn’t defy your every move? He led you out into the rain, smiling as both of you got completely soaked. He was acting like a child- erupting into a fit of laughter at your lame attempt to be angry.

“Your face is priceless!” He cackled, leaning over himself to try and catch a breath. You stood there, stunned to silence and beet red. While you were feeling better after he comforted you, now he was just testing your patience. You turned away from him, frustrated enough that he got you wet.

As you were storming off, splashing footsteps could be heard behind you as he grabbed your wrist, twirling you into a waltz position. A squeal escaped you as you nearly fell from the sudden force, but he caught you effortlessly. “Might I have this dance, love?”

“No.”

“Come on, when was the last time we danced for fun?” He smiled softly, extending your arm out and taking a slow step to the left. “The last time you danced for fun?”

“I’m not doing this.” You deadpanned, walking off-beat with the stubborn boy.

“And I’m not listening to youu!” He announced to the empty courtyard, only gripping your hand tighter.

“Come ooooon… Just let go.” You begged, leaning your body weight against his grasp. When you looked back up, he just smiled back; patiently. A first for him. “Just because you’re about to graduate from college doesn’t mean you have to start acting like an adult.”

“1 2 3, 1 2 3…” He kept counting as he started leading you in circles. You followed, but not because you wanted to…of course. He laughed when your steps finally started to match, and you weren’t sure if it was in disbelief or amusement. You knew he was just trying to comfort you with his antics like he always did, but it didn’t make it any less annoying.

He lead you through the raindrops, exaggerating his dance and humming in hopes of lightening the mood. He even tried to spin you around, and you nearly lost it when it was him who nearly slipped instead. The Hwang Hyunjin, the most notorious dancer in your school, was losing his footwork in an attempt to make you feel better. His whole display was really heartwarming, honestly.

This time, though, you were the one to catch him from falling, gripping onto his waist tightly. He stared into you as you finally broke into a smile, a real smile, and pulled him up. His lips stretched further than ever, either corner nearly reaching his ears. It made your heart swell with joy.

“Come on now,” You smiled, leading him through the dance now. He continued humming, but this time you joined him. You two paced around the empty space, now far beyond the opening hours of the building. Neither of you cared, you were too focused on eachother. You leaned your head against his chest, its pounding almost rhythmic against your ear. That was until you realized it matched yours. You’d been dancing for a while, and were rocking slowly to a close.

You couldn’t remember the last time that dancing felt so liberating.

Neither of you could let go of each other’s hands in the bliss of the moment, until he pulled you suddenly into a hug. He rocked you left and right in his embrace, so relieved that you were finally acting like yourself again.

“Will you finally admit that you feel better now?” He demanded, cupping your face in his hands.

“Yeah, but not when this cold kicks in tomorrow,” You laugh, shoving his hands away from your face.

“Then I’ll just have to make sure you don’t catch it.” He parts your hair to plant a kiss on your forehead. “Can’t have my love getting sick now,” He was smiling, and you were smiling because he was smiling. The cheesiness you two were displaying was gross, even for you.

He didn’t dare remove his hands from your face, as if the moment he did, he would drop and break you. Instead, he guided his hands slowly to your cheeks again, brushing the edge of your lips with his thumb. “Do I get a kiss now?”

“Fine, fine. I accept defeat.” You admit, eyes falling slowly as you felt his hand travel to the back of your head. So he kissed you, the only way he knew how to; lovingly, passionately. With everything he could give you. You could feel your heart bouncing around your chest, unsure what to do with your overwhelming emotion. Before you knew it, his lips left yours, and your eyelashes fluttered to meet his eyes. He looked at you almost frantically, eyes tracing your face while he was completely flushed.

“I should go back home and shower, so I don’t get sick…” You reminded him, tugging a lone strand of hair behind his ear. “Nope. You’re sleeping with me tonight at the dorm so I can take care of you.” He turned to walk inside, hand lightly holding yours. You hadn’t noticed, but it stopped raining now.

“Who said I wanted to go back to your dorm?”

“You don’t have to,” He added, not looking down at you. He knew you’d never deny an offer to go over and hang out with him and his roommates, and full access to his wardrobe.

“...Touché.” You replied as you followed behind him, earning a cheeky grin from the boy.

“And since when were you such a tease?”

“Since you decided to be so stubborn.” He shot back, continuing to rock your intertwined hand back and forth. Only now did you realize how childish you had been this whole time; when he was just trying to comfort you.

“Oh.” Was all you managed to say through your obvious blush. Rather than rub it in, he just smiled at you lovingly. “It’s okay though. We all have our moments,” He faced you, pinching your nose jokingly. “Even someone as perfect as you.” Your hand hovered over where his was, also to cover the heat on your cheeks.

“Oh please, have you seen yourself?”

“I have. Still don’t stand a chance.”
