Work Text:
I’ve been hiding away for a while when a knock hits the door.
Haymitch found me. Time to find a new closet.
He bangs again.
And again.
“I don’t need another lecture, Haymitch.”
“Not Haymitch,” a voice calls.
Finnick.
I reach over, unlocking the door.
“Can I sit beside you?”
I slide over.
“What are we even fighting for at this point?” He meets my eyes. “They took the old Peeta, they took Annie, they took District 12, they took Gale from me, they tried to take Prim, they’re killing thousands right now. Wouldn’t it just be easier if we had never started this war?”
“If we had never started this war, either you or Peeta would have died last year, and all but one of us would have died this year. If we had never started this war, I’d still be working for the Capitol every night. If we had never started this war, Annie and I never would have gotten married. I know it looks bleak… but it’s worth it. It will be worth it.”
“But how do you know?”
“Just a feeling.”
It doesn’t seem like enough, but somehow it is.
I rest my head against his shoulder. “Thank you.”
His arm goes around me. “For what?”
“For keeping me sane.”
He chuckles. “Hey, you do it for me.” His expression sobers. “I’ll always keep you sane.”
