Chapter 1: Little Sister

Chapter Text

They have Adaine. Adaine is gone. She was taken.

Fig doesn’t know what to do. They have Adaine.

“Fig, come on! We have to figure something out. We have to keep moving.” Riz calls out to her.

Fig tears her gaze away from where Adaine was once standing and focuses on Riz.

“We have to get her back. We need Adaine.” She simply says. The tiefling starts pacing back and forth, running her hands through her hair repeatedly as she tries to think of ways to get Adaine back when she doesn’t know where the high elf was taken.

Gorgug, Kristen, and Fabian catch up with them and they all take a moment and try to calm down Fig. By now Riz has convinced Fig to at least stop pacing and sit down.

“The only thing I knew going into this was that I had to keep Adaine safe and now they have her.” Fig says to the group. The rest of the Bad Kids weren’t exactly sure how to respond to that.

“Fig, we’ll get her back. We just have to come up with a plan.” Gorgug says, sitting down next to Fig and wrapping his arm around her comfortingly.

“Well, we need to get her now! Let’s go!” Fig snaps out, almost immediately getting up and starting to move further into the forest, only to be grabbed by Fabian.

“Hold on, where are you going?”

“I don’t know!” Fig yells out, pulling out of his grasp, then looks at him sincerely. “They have Adaine, Fabian! We need Adaine! I need to find my little sister!” She pleads.

Fabian sighs and looks to the rest of the group, then back at Fig. The group is all very protective of Adaine and has been since they learned about her upbringing. They try to make up for the love that Adaine didn’t receive as a child. Since moving in with the Faeth’s with Jawbone, however, Fig has taken a bigger role in that protectiveness. This isn’t the first time Fig has referred to Adaine as her family, but it’s the first time she’s referred to her as her sister.

“I know, Fig. We’ll get your sister back. But running off when you don’t know where you’re going isn’t going to help. So let’s come up with a plan.” Fabian explains, trying to get Fig to think clearly enough to comprehend what he’s saying, which luckily she does.

Fig nods and walks with Fabian back to the group, sitting on the ground while she listens to the group’s ideas. She’s too upset to think right now, but she’ll sure as hell put in her input if she thinks a plan won’t work.

Flash forward to the battle against Angwyn, Fig sees Adaine put in all of her effort against her birth father (They’ve started calling the Abernants Adaine’s birth family, since she has a real family now). At one point, Angwyn sees a chance to get a hit on Adaine, so Fig steps in.

“Hey, asshole!” She yells out, successfully getting Angwyn to turn around.

“Stay away from my little sister!” Fig yells, before shredding a note on her bass so loud that Angwyn is knocked out of concentration long enough for Adaine to finish him off. Fig watches as her sister kills her abuser, and she smiles with pride.

Adaine stares down at her father, the panic starting to rise. She turns to the side, throws up, and looks back. She immediately feels Fig’s hand on her back as she moves to Adaine’s side. The high elf immediately crumbles to the ground and starts crying into Fig’s shoulder.

“You did it. You beat him. All on your own. I’m so proud of you.” Fig says, rubbing circles on her back. She looks up to see Aelwyn staring at her and Adaine. Fig glares at her before turning her attention back to her sister.

“She’s not your sister.” Aelwyn bitterly chimes in. Fig almost scoffs in response. Funny how the girl who’s made Adaine’s life miserable is now speaking about what makes a family. Sure, Aelwyn is Adaine’s sister, and Fig knows that Adaine would love to mend her relationship with Aelwyn. However, it’s going to take a while for that to fully happen.

Fig stands, still holding onto Adaine’s hand.

“She is more my sister than she ever was yours. You know why? Because I love her and treat her with kindness. Not because she’s done anything, just because she’s Adaine. And that’s enough.” She spits out at Aelwyn, before pulling Adaine to her feet and starting to walk them back towards the group. She’ll leave it up to Adaine whether or not Aelwyn joins them.

As they walk, they remain silent, both aware of the uncharted territory they’ve found themselves in.

Right as they are about to get back to the group, Adaine pipes up.

“You know I’m older than you, right?”

Fig nods.

“I know. But you need a big sister, and I’ll be that no matter what my age is.”

Adaine lets out a breathy laugh.

“Thanks, Fig.”

The tiefling shrugs.

“No problem, little sister.”

A few silent moments later, Adaine speaks up again.

“I’m taller than you, too”

“Adaine!”

Adaine laughs and puts her hands up in surrender.

“I’m just saying!”

Fig chuckles and tightens her hold on Adaine’s hand.

“Come on, let’s get Ayda and go home.”
