“I don’t know any more than you do,” Riz protests. “What… what were the exact words the witch used? When she cursed Adaine?”
Fabian clears his throat. “‘May your blood run as cold as your heart.’ And then she screamed really loud as she died but I don’t think that was part of the curse.”
“Well, apparently I’ve got a cold fucking heart,” Adaine says, shivering, as ice crystals begin to flutter from her skin and collect on the shiny stone ground beneath her feet. “I didn’t think it was this cold, though.” She frowns and Riz can see that she really is upset, despite her flippant tone. He supposes he would be, too, if he learned, against his will, that he was so cold-hearted.

The issue with making a go-bag at 12 years old is that the things you think you’ll need as a kid are not in fact that useful when you get whisked away at 20.
It started with clothes, her small child clothes in no way fitting her grown body, especially a few puberties later. Luckily, between Van and Marya she’s been able to make do.
It also means she doesn’t have her meds.
