Chapter Text
Gumshoe thought that the moment Edgeworth said yes to the question following his confession would be the happiest moment of his life, but he couldn't be more wrong. The arrival of every new day would always bring more joy to his life, after all, they both worked together, had lunch together, thought of different ways to solve a case together, left work together, and of course, they loved each other! … together.
Edgeworth was the best (and only) boyfriend he'd had and he often came with new ways to show Gumshoe how much he loved him!
Sometimes, he would get him a present, Gumshoe didn't need a new keyring or a paperweight, but the thought was what mattered! Besides, the few times he got him a sweet candy like that breathtaking chocolate heart or that exquisite foreign cake, he really enjoyed all of them! Well, rather half of them because what kind of boyfriend would eat a nice treat without sharing some with his lover? Definitely not Dick Gumshoe.
Other times, he would take him to shows, whether it was the opera, the theater or that classical music concert the Culture Ministry offered last month. It was all new to Gumshoe and he loved experiencing new things. Not as much as spending time with Mr. Edgeworth though.
Getting gifts and experiencing new things was great, however, the rarest way to show him his love was Gumshoe's personal favorite. Only a couple of times, Edgeworth had opened up to him, confiding in him the way he felt, his fears, his hopes for the future and his hobbies. It was never planned in advance, Edgeworth wasn't one for big shows or anything, so he would casually mention his thoughts, and Gumshoe would always listen to him because he cared.
Gumshoe didn't have much to offer on his part. Money had always been an issue for him, but that was no obstacle for their love. Even if his gifts were modest, or the places he took him to were more ordinary, Edgeworth without a doubt appreciated his attempts, like that drawing he made of the Steel Samurai that Edgeworth secretly kept inside his desk drawer or that time he took him to that secret spot in the Goodfaith Park on Christmas to cheer him up, and when Edgeworth was gazing in wonder at the starry park, he confided him on part of his recurring nightmare.
But of course, their relationship wasn't perfect.
Gumshoe is a big man because he's full of love and he has to give it to those who deserve it, or at least that's what his parents always told him. The instant he sees his boyfriend at work he runs to him and greets him. Edgeworth told him that they have to be professional at work, to toe the line or something like that. This means he can't hug him and kiss him and lift him off the ground as he desires, but that doesn't explain why Edgeworth never reciprocated on all the other occasions outside of work.
At first, he thought that it was because a relationship was new for both of them and he needed to get used to it, but 15 months had already passed…
It was always the same pattern. Gumshoe would kiss him and Edgeworth would have that sparkle in his eyes and that dreamy smile all over his pretty face, then he would look distressed, almost angry, and break the kiss, whether pushing him or just taking a step back, it didn't matter, and finally he would divert the topic totally dismissing what they were having.
And well, this would apply to all those times Gumshoe held him or whenever they held their hands or just any kind of affection that Gumshoe would start. And no, Edgeworth had never taken the initiative in any of those scenarios, Gumshoe kept track of that and was starting to lose hope for it to ever happen.
Gumshoe was happy in their relationship, but even if Edgeworth was always trying his best to show him his love, he often wondered if Edgeworth felt the same for him. What if he was only with him because of pity? As much as Gumshoe loved him, he didn't want to force him to do anything he didn't want.
But everything was right, wasn't it? They had never argued before or anything. That's proof enough that they are both happy together.
