Work Text:
The grand ballroom was ablaze with shimmering lights and the melodic strains of music. Princess Peach had spared no expense in organizing a lavish party to celebrate the unity of the Mushroom Kingdom.
You stood by Ludwig's side, his arm wrapped securely around your waist. The soft fabric of his tailored suit brushed against your skin as you moved gracefully through the crowd, his presence a comforting anchor amidst the lively chatter and enchanting melodies.
Ludwig, the forever esteemed and enigmatic prince, had chosen you as his plus one for the evening. You relished these moments of togetherness, cherishing the opportunity to accompany him to such a prestigious event.
As the night wore on, the air became infused with an undercurrent of playfulness. Laughter echoed throughout the room, mingling with the elegant strains of the orchestra. In this atmosphere of revelry, you couldn't resist teasing Ludwig, determined to elicit a smile from his typically stoic countenance.
Your fingers danced along the fabric of his suit jacket, tracing delicate patterns as you leaned in, your lips grazing the shell of his ear. "You clean up quite nicely, Ludwig," you whispered, a hint of mischief lacing your voice. "I must admit, you've caught my eye tonight."
A subtle blush colored his cheeks, his usually composed demeanor momentarily faltering. A spark of amusement flickered in his eyes as he turned to face you, a faint smile gracing his lips. "Is that so?" he responded, his voice carrying a note of playful skepticism.
Feeling emboldened by the atmosphere of the evening, your hand slipped from his waist to his thigh, a playful gesture that you thought would elicit a lighthearted reaction. But as your fingers made contact, a sudden stiffness gripped his body, his expression clouding with an uncharacteristic heaviness. Instantly, you knew something was extremely off.
His gaze grew distant, as if transported to a place far beyond the gilded ballroom. Sensing that something had triggered a painful memory, you knew that it was crucial to give him the space and support he needed. In a hushed tone, he requested that you join him on the balcony, away from the prying eyes and the festive clamor.
The moonlight spilled over the sprawling balcony, casting a soft glow on the elegant banister. The cool night air embraced you both as you found a quiet corner to sit, the distant melody of the orchestra providing a gentle backdrop to your conversation.
"I'm sorry," you began softly, your voice laced with concern. "I didn't mean to bring up anything that upset you. I’m here to listen to anything, I promise. Do you want to talk about it?" Your heart was pounding in your chest. To say that you were scared was an understatement.
"It's a long story," Ludwig's voice resonated, barely above a whisper, as he stood by the balcony, his gloved finger gently tracing the intricate patterns on the banister. In that vulnerable moment, his usual mask of stoicism had dissolved, revealing a side of him that was rarely seen. Sensing his emotional turmoil, you placed a reassuring hand on his shoulder, offering him a silent reminder that he was not alone.
Guilt gnawed at your insides, realizing that you had unintentionally broached a sensitive topic in such an insensitive manner. It hadn't occurred to you that his reluctance to discuss it might stem from deep discomfort. Determined to support him, you leaned on the banister alongside him, letting your forearms rest on its cool metal surface, which sent a shiver down your arms. Despite your efforts to lighten the mood with a smile, it faded quickly when you saw the weight of his sigh and the furrowing of his eyebrows, signs of his inner turmoil. The silence stretched between you, heavy and uncomfortable.
"Just... start wherever you feel the most comfortable, okay?" you gently suggested, tapping his shoulder affectionately, hoping to alleviate some of the tension. His shoulder tensed under your touch as he contemplated your words. Finally, he let out a half-hearted laugh, but it vanished as quickly as it came. Your hand slid from his shoulder to rest on top of his, intertwining your fingers on the banister. Leaning down, you pressed a tender kiss to his knuckles, eliciting a soft, endearing hum from him.
"Well, if I were to start where I feel the most comfortable, then I suppose I will never start at all," he admitted, his voice heavy with the weight of his thoughts. A silence settled between you, pregnant with unspoken words that refused to materialize. Your eyebrows furrowed, reflecting the tense atmosphere that enveloped you both.
In the background, the gentle chatter of the guests and the soft strains of music floated from the building, blending with the harmonious hum of insects. The ethereal melody of high, twinkling notes intertwined with the gentle strings filled the air, creating a soothing backdrop to the moment. Your gaze wandered past the banister, taking in the sight of a magnificent garden spread out before you, with towering bushes that seemed to surpass your own height and multi-colored flowers adorning its pathways. The vibrant hues of pink and the delicate beauty of the garden mirrored the elegance of the monarch herself. Amidst the garden, you spotted three specks of light making their way towards the castle, most likely lanterns carried by unseen hands. Despite the beauty surrounding you, a sense of boredom crept over you, causing you to hum absentmindedly and lower your head.
The warm night air enveloped your skin, carrying the distinct scent of greenery and flowers. Stray strands of hair tickled the back of your neck, and you could hear and feel every subtle movement that Ludwig made beside you. His rhythmic breaths served as a lullaby, deepening your sense of relaxation.
The quiet presence of the guests and the distant music made the silence more bearable, yet remnants of the previous tension still lingered. Ludwig sighed heavily, a troubled sound that drew your attention away from your thoughts. Lost in the soundscape and your own reflections, you had lost track of time. Tilting your head towards him, you sought to understand his inner turmoil.
"I..." His voice trailed off, a mixture of uncertainty and resolution evident in his eyes as he stepped back from the banister, extending his hand towards you. It was an unspoken invitation, and you instinctively reached out, allowing your hand to be enveloped in his. Drawing you closer, he guided your hands to rest on his shoulders, while his hands found their place around your waist. Together, you swayed slowly, moving in harmony with the faint twinkling notes that filled the air.
"I have a hard time... trusting those around me, especially those closest to me," Ludwig confessed, his voice tinged with vulnerability. As you nodded, leaning into his touch, you reflected on one of the most frustrating aspects of your relationship with him—his tendency to keep a distance from others. He preferred to tackle problems on his own, refusing help even when it was offered. You had spent countless moments trying to chip away at the walls he had built around himself, striving to make him open up to you. It was a slow and arduous process, but you remained determined to break down those walls, piece by piece, corner by corner. Yet, you knew that the time for that was not now.
"When I was a child..." Ludwig's voice trailed off, and he released a shaky breath. His grip on your waist tightened ever so slightly, seeking solace in your presence. Resting your head against his chest, you could feel the comforting thump of his heart against your cheek. "When I was a child, I had to endure unfortunate circumstances. It was nothing trivial... " His voice faltered, his words unable to convey the depth of the pain he had experienced.
"Take your time; there's no rush, my love," you assured him, your voice laced with empathy. It pained you to witness his struggle to articulate his feelings, knowing how eloquent and thoughtful he typically was. "I will be here for as long as you want me to be. If you don't feel comfortable talking about it now, there's always a later date."
With a sigh and a shake of his head, Ludwig cleared his throat and continued. "The one who took care of me... he did unspeakable things, committed atrocious acts against me. He made me do things that I dare not repeat to another soul." His grip on your hand tightened, and a twinge of guilt and pity surged within your chest, the tempo of your dance quickening imperceptibly. "I am not proud of what I had to do during that time."
"You were just a child," you murmured softly, offering comfort in your words. "Children are innocent, unaware of the evils that exist in the world until they experience them first hand. It's not something you should bear guilt for." Almost apologizing for his past, you caught yourself, realizing that sympathy or pity was not what he sought or needed.
"You're catching onto my speech patterns," he teased, a faint smile playing on his lips.
"Hush," you retorted playfully, a smile gracing your own lips. His hand moved from your waist to the small of your back, guiding you out of the dance position and into a warm embrace. His fingers grazed the seam of your dress, lost in contemplation. The atmosphere became more relaxed as he resumed speaking, his voice a soothing presence in the night.
"As a child, I was never one for socializing. I preferred reading and studying," he confessed, his tone tinged with a hint of surprise, as if the revelation amused him. You let out a mock gasp, prompting him to roll his eyes playfully. "Yes, I, Ludwig, was not like other children. Spare me your applause." Your giggle filled the air, and you rewarded him with a gentle squeeze around his waist, a silent encouragement to continue. His chest rose and fell steadily, drawing your head along with it, and he rewarded you with a tender kiss on your forehead.
"During those times, I would often disappear for days on end. When I grew tired of my siblings' antics, I would retreat to indulge in my books. The longest I ever sequestered myself was around five days, if my memory serves me well. Kamek knew not to disturb me during those times, so he would order a minion to deliver food to my door."
"But you hardly touched the food," you interjected, knowing all too well that Ludwig had a habit of neglecting his basic needs, often putting others before himself. It wasn't that he had an eating disorder, but rather a result of his responsibilities as the eldest and most relied-upon among his siblings. He would often prioritize their needs over his own, neglecting proper meals in the process.
"No, I never did," he admitted, his fingers finding solace in your hair as he gently stroked the strands. "As a result, I was severely underweight as a child. The doctors believed I purposely avoided food. But that's a story for another time." He leaned into your touch, savoring the comfort it provided. "On one occasion, I disappeared for an extended period, causing concern among those who cared for my well-being."
Without words, you understood the implications. Rumors of Ludwig being on suicide watch during his childhood had reached your ears, but you had always taken them with a grain of salt, aware of how information could be distorted as it traveled through various channels. Especially when it concerned the royal family or anyone under His Highness' care.
"But that was just the beginning," Ludwig continued, his voice tinged with bitterness. "Over the course of two, possibly three, months, I would vanish for a week at a time. Those who were once concerned grew less vigilant after the third or fourth occurrence. Unfortunately for me, I suppose." His words carried a touch of sarcasm.
Silence settled once again, and you absentmindedly traced circles on the back of his jacket, relishing its softness under your fingertips. Your mind wandered, contemplating the magnitude of what he had endured, aware that there was much more beneath the surface that you couldn't yet comprehend. The fact that he trusted you enough to share this sensitive part of his past filled you with a mixture of pride and other emotions that were difficult to decipher. His breath tickled your skin, urging you to draw closer, and you nestled against him, pressing your head firmly against his chest.
"I like your jacket," you remarked softly, seeking a small distraction from the weight of the conversation. It was a peculiar observation, but the texture beneath your touch satisfied an unanticipated itch. "It feels so soft, unlike those other fancy clothes that can be scratchy." He chuckled in response, his arms loosening around you as he reached to rub the fabric between his own fingertips, affirming your observation with an agreeing hum.
As you sat in a comfortable silence, cherishing each other's presence, the awareness that there was still much to discuss hung in the air. The rumors and gossip that surrounded the princes and princesses were numerous, ranging from love interests to tales of attempted suicides and unspeakable acts you would never repeat. The public seemed to revel in the smallest details, transforming them into grand narratives that spread like wildfire. And yet, the royal family rarely addressed or dispelled these rumors unless they posed a threat to their lives or reputations. You couldn't help but think about the time when a false rumor of one of them dying had swept across not only the Koopa Kingdom, but multiple surrounding kingdoms as well, causing panic and distress.
The tender caress on your cheek drew you back from your musings, only to find Ludwig's gaze fixed on you with a mixture of vulnerability and trepidation. His voice quivered as he began to speak, the weight of his words heavy in the air.
"I... there's something else I haven't shared," he admitted, his voice barely above a whisper. The atmosphere grew palpably heavier as the gravity of his revelation settled upon you. You instinctively leaned closer, your eyes filled with concern, silently urging him to continue. Ludwig took a deep breath, summoning the strength to delve into the depths of his painful past.
"When I mentioned the unspeakable things and atrocious acts... it was more than neglect and manipulation," he confessed, his voice shaking with each syllable. "My caretaker, the one who was entrusted with my well-being, subjected me to unimaginable abuse." As the words left his lips, an unutterable anguish flashed across his face, etching lines of pain and suffering that spoke volumes, much as he tried to hide his expression.
A gasp escaped your lips as the full weight of his revelation hit you. It felt as though the air had been sucked out of the room, leaving behind an eerie silence that matched the haunting reality Ludwig had endured. The horror of what he had gone through at the hands of someone who should have protected him sent chills coursing down your spine, your heart constricting with a mixture of empathy and rage.
"He would lock me inside a small, dark closet in his quarters... for his personal use," Ludwig continued, his voice trembling with a mixture of anger and shame. His words carried a hauntingly vivid imagery, painting a picture of an innocent child trapped in a suffocating space, subjected to unspeakable acts of cruelty. The sheer depravity of the situation left you reeling, struggling to comprehend the depths of the darkness Ludwig had endured.
Tears welled up in your eyes as you looked into Ludwig's pain-filled gaze, your heart breaking for the innocent child he once was and the scars that still lingered within him. Words failed you in the face of such unspeakable suffering, and instead, you found solace in the warmth of your embrace, holding him tightly as if to shield him from the demons of his past.
As the tears glistened in Ludwig's eyes, mirroring your own, you couldn't help but be consumed by a surge of rage and frustration. How could no one have noticed the pain he had been silently enduring all these years? The thought that his suffering had gone unnoticed, disregarded by those around him, filled you with an indescribable anger.
For once, Ludwig let his guard down, allowing his emotions to spill forth like a torrential downpour. His vulnerability was both heartbreaking and empowering, as he entrusted you with the weight of his pain. With a gentle touch, you wiped away the stray tear that escaped his lashes, conveying compassion and solidarity in that simple gesture. Words failed you in that moment, unable to capture the depth of your sympathy and the fiery fury that burned within you for those who had inflicted such harm upon him.
With great care, you slowly pulled back from the embrace, your hands cradling his face as your eyes locked with his. His shaky exhale was met with a kiss pressed to your palm, his lips a testament to his gratitude and the trust he placed in you.
The tremor in your voice betrayed your own troubled past, and you found yourself on the precipice of revealing a shared experience. A lump formed in your throat, making it difficult to speak. Tears welled up in your eyes, mingling with the echoes of his own pain.
"I... understand how it feels," you finally managed to say, your voice quivering with emotion. "To endure something so unspeakable, something that no one can truly comprehend unless they have found themselves under the cruel hand of such darkness. I went through... something similar." Your voice trailed off, choked by the weight of your emotions.
Ludwig's gaze bore into yours, his expression shifting from pain to a sad understanding. His fingers brushed away your tears with the same tenderness you had shown him, creating an unspoken connection between you.
A mixture of tears and laughter escaped Ludwig's lips as he wiped away the moisture from his eyes with a single swipe. Following his lead, you did the same, sharing a moment of bittersweet humor amidst the heaviness of the situation.
"Shall we add to the 'trauma train'?" Ludwig teased, a hint of playful sarcasm lacing his words, as he leaned in to press a soft kiss to your lips. The absurdity of the phrase caught you off guard, and a giggle escaped your lips, mingling with his own laughter.
"Trauma train?" you repeated, a touch of incredulity in your voice. Ludwig sighed in response, a glimmer of amusement dancing in his eyes.
"I know, such a silly name," he admitted, a small smile tugging at the corners of his lips. "It happened during a forced talk-therapy session between my siblings and me after the loss of our parents." The memory seemed to bring a sense of lightness, however fleeting, to his demeanor.
You couldn't help but feel a mixture of surprise and admiration at his ability to approach such a difficult subject with a touch of humor. It spoke volumes about his resilience and strength of character. Composing yourself, you nodded encouragingly, silently urging him to continue. If it was something he was unfazed by, then you should act no different.
"I was young, perhaps around thirteen or fourteen," Ludwig began, his voice carrying a touch of nostalgia mixed with trepidation. "My father, in his well-meaning but misguided attempts, thought that a talk-therapy session would help us overcome our struggles. He had set it up with a renowned therapist, but little did he know just how resistant we all could be."
A knowing smile tugged at your lips as you considered the mischievous nature of Ludwig's siblings. It didn't surprise you in the least that it was Iggy, the most eccentric of them all, who had given the therapist a hard time. Iggy was known for his quick wit and snarky comments, always keeping everyone on their toes.
"Let me guess, was it Iggy?" you ventured, a playful glint in your eyes. You had developed a soft spot for the eccentric scientist, finding his unique personality both endearing and amusing.
"Mhm," Ludwig confirmed with a chuckle, his fondness for his sibling evident. "The poor therapist had no idea how to react. Iggy had a way of turning any serious conversation into a battle of wits and intellect. I don't think the therapist stood a chance."
Laughter bubbled up within you, a shared moment of amusement amidst the weight of their collective grief. It was a relief to find lightness in the midst of such heavy topics, allowing you both to momentarily escape the darkness that loomed over your pasts.
"But what about you? Did you give the therapist a hard time too?" you inquired, genuinely curious to hear his experience. While Ludwig may have appeared stoic and reserved, there was a mischievous spark in his eyes that hinted at a more playful side.
A playful smirk tugged at the corners of Ludwig's lips, his eyes glimmering with mischief. "Oh, I had my moments," he confessed, a twinkle of amusement dancing in his gaze. "But I was more of the brooding and introspective type during those sessions. The therapist probably wondered if I would ever open up."
You chuckled softly at his remark, your eyes meeting his with a knowing glint. "Ah, my mysterious and enigmatic Ludwig," you teased, a hint of sarcasm lacing your words. He rolled his eyes playfully in response, the tension of the previous conversation dissipating in the exchange.
"And when will that be, huh?" you continued, playfully resting your forearms on his shoulders and your hands on the nape of his neck. Your fingers twirled a few stray locks of hair, relishing in their softness as you found a surprisingly tender look in his eyes. Despite the tease, you understood the significance of his openness, realizing just how much it took for him to share his thoughts and vulnerabilities. It was as if a weight had been lifted, and he found solace in having someone he could trust.
A warm smile graced your lips as you conveyed your pride in him. "I'm incredibly proud of you for opening up, especially tonight," you whispered, your voice filled with tenderness. "It takes tremendous courage to face old wounds and share your pain. I could never express enough how relieved I am that you trust me enough to let me in. You're allowed to feel and process, my love, without having to keep it all inside. I'm here for you, always. No matter what your past may hold, it’s still you today that I love."
Ludwig's expression softened, his eyes shimmering with gratitude and vulnerability, deepening the connection between you. His arms tightened around you, drawing you closer until it felt as if you were melding into one another. In his embrace, you felt a sense of belonging and security that was unparalleled. He was your safe haven, the anchor in the storms of life. He felt like home.
"I can't put into words how grateful I am to have you by my side," he murmured, his voice tinged with emotion. "You've shown me a love and understanding I never thought possible. With you, I feel safe to let my guard down, to unravel the layers of my past. And for that, I am eternally grateful."
“Y’know, most people just say ‘thank you, I love you,” you quipped, but you both know that his words made butterflies erupt in your chest and stomach. His heartfelt words sent a surge of joy through your veins, making your heart flutter and tears of happiness well up in your eyes.
A playful glint sparked in his eyes as he responded to your quip. "Well, my dear, you deserve more than just a simple 'thank you, I love you'," he said, his voice laced with warmth. "Your love has woven its way into the very fabric of my being. It has brought light into the darkest corners of my soul, and for that, I can never thank you enough."
"I love you, Ludwig," you whispered, the weight of your emotions making the words resonate with undeniable significance. "No matter what happens in this journey we call life, my love for you will remain unwavering. Every aspect of you, the joys and the pains, the strength and the vulnerability, the good and the bad, I cherish it all joyously. You are the missing piece that completes me."
His grip on you tightened even more, as if to reinforce his devotion. The silent language of his touch spoke volumes, conveying the depth of his love and commitment to you. In that moment, you knew that you were cherished beyond measure.
"And I love you, my dear," Ludwig responded, his voice filled with sincerity and tenderness. "With you, I have found a love that defies all darkness, a love that fills the voids within me and makes me feel truly whole. With every fiber of my being, I love you."
The night wrapped around you like a warm blanket, cocooning you in the embrace of your love. In each other's arms, you found solace, strength, and the courage to face whatever the world had in store. But just as the intimacy of the moment reached its peak, the serenity was interrupted by the cracking sound of the doors being thrown open.
As if on a humorous cue, a very tipsy Larry stumbled into view, his eyes wide and a mischievous grin on his face. "Hey, you two lovebirds! Get your shells in here and let's party!" he exclaimed, his voice booming in the quiet night. A burst of raucous laughter escaped his lips as he cheered and gestured for you both to join the festivities.
You couldn't help but chuckle at the timing of his entrance, the abrupt shift from deep introspection to lighthearted revelry. With a shared smile, you and Ludwig disentangled yourselves, the echoes of your tender moment lingering in the air.
