Chapter Text
The sky is as gloomy as Dazai feels. He follows Kunikida and Atsushi as they make their way to their next case.
An omega murder case, was it?
“Dazai-san.”
Yes.. another omega victim tied to illegal drugs and ability users.
“Zai-san,”
Hormone disrupting drugs doing god know what-
He’s shaken by the shoulders.
The brunette blinks, and looks up to see Kunikida in front of him.
“Dazai, where’s your focus?”
Behind the blond, Atsushi looks at him with something like concern(?)
He smiles, putting on a light expression.
“Kunikidaa-kun~ why I was thinking about jumping off that bridge of course!”
The blonde alpha drags him to the site by the collar, as expected.
“Pay attention you waste of space! We have another case tied to those drugs, and we’ve just got a lead on their location. This is a serious case, understood?”
Dazai nods resolutely, before putting an arm around Atsushi.
“Did you hear that, At-su-shi-kun? You have to be serious .”
Atsushi just sighs before shaking his head.
“We’re here.”
In front of them is a cold and barren looking warehouse.
It really seemed as if no one was there.
Dazai scanned the space and made his deductions before stepping inside.
No foot tracks in the front of the small warehouse. It’s unlikely anyone has visited for a few days.
They carefully make their way inside inspecting the surroundings.
Atsushi sneezes, covering his nose with his arm.
“Why would they put such important drugs in a place like this?” He coughs out.
Dazai’s eye catches an unremarkable brown box.
“It’s here.”
He moves toward the box and lifts the lid.
There’s a metal mechanism with a keyhole on it.
Grabbing a pin from his pocket, he bends it a bit before inserting it into the keyhole.
he closes his eyes, feeling around and going deeper and-
click!
the metal plates pull apart, revealing packets of powders. Definitely samples of the drug.
“Here it is~”
Kunikida gawks at the fast discovery.
“Huh, how did you-“
“It’s the only box with minimal dust compared to everything else here. It’s plainness stands out as well.”
Atsushi marvels at the quick deduction, but before he can say anything, a gunshot rings out and He’s suddenly shoved away.
Atsushi activates his ability and finds that he can’t.
Dazai was the one who pushed him away from the bullet’s trajectory.
They both tumble to the floor and Kunikida immediately aims his gun toward the front gate.
He hears Dazai’s calm voice as the brunet pulls himself up.
“Looks like they just happened to come pick it up when we came. How unlucky.”
He clicks his tongue, and Atsushi has the feeling that he’s referring to the gang.
The man runs in wholly unprepared for the three strongest ability users of the ADA. Kunikida easily overpowers him in combat, while Dazai tackles another that comes running through. The man is an alpha, much larger than Dazai, but Atsushi holds down his arms, allowing Dazai to put a kick to the back of his neck, rendering him unconscious.
“Doppo Poet!”
Kunikida restrains them with handcuffs pulled out of his notebook. He pulls out his phone to make a call, likely to the police station.
Dazai leisurely grabs the box and walks towards the door.
He stops to think of something before stepping outside. Why is he doing the heavy lifting when his little protege is here?
“Atsushi, you can carry the box to the car, we need it for Yosano sensei’s investigation-“
The box is roughly wrenched out of his hands and Dazai only has a moment to dodge the punch coming straight for his head.
“Dazai-san!”
It misses him by an inch and he braces himself to defend another attack, but instead the sound of plastic being ripped open sounds and dread curls in his stomach.
He faces the perpetrator due to the momentum, and gets a full fist of white powder thrown straight at his face.
“You can suffer now, little detective fools-!”
‘Oh no. No. No way..’
“Aah–!” Although his eyes were closed in time, the drug invaded his nose and he coughed over the burn in his throat.
It tasted bitter and burned his nose so much that he forgets about his worry for a moment.
He faintly sees Atsushi knock out the man with his claws, before his head is ringing, and there’s voices talking over his hunched figure.
A hand is on his back, encouraging him as he coughs out whatever he can of the substance, tears pricking his eyes.
He sees his partner and protégé after things clear up somewhat.
Atsushi is showing him that concerned expression again.
“Dazai-san, are you, are you okay?”
The blonde alpha is eyeing him with a similar expression.
“Eh, Kunikida looks worried?”
“Of course I’m worried, you fool! Tell us how you feel.”
He staggers slightly, and Atsushi holds his arm for support.
“I think it’s fine, just a bit dizzy,” he mutters.
Kunikida sighs.
Atsushi, take him back to the car. I’ll be there in a minute.”
Dazai thinks Atsushi says something, but he’s suddenly feeling a bit woozy. He can’t help but think that something is terribly wrong. There was something important.
‘What was it..I was thinking..’
He lets Atsushi lead him to the backseat and he immediately closes his eyes as soon as his head hits the seat.
Sleeping sounds as good as dying at the moment. And maybe taking off his coat. It’s getting a bit warm.
“Wait, Dazai-san, don’t pass out right now, please!”
He frowns, cracking one eye open.
Ah, it’s that look again. Worry.
“I don’t think the drug will affect you much since you’re an alpha, but..please stay awake until we get to Yosano sensei.”
“Mm.”
“Dazai-san, do you need water?”
“Mm.”
“How do you feel right now?”
“Mm…”
The beta frowns at the half-dead response.
--
Dazai is awake by the time they reach the agency, and he seems to be fine for the moment, if just a bit disoriented.
Yosano rushes to check him, asking Dazai questions he half heartedly answers.
“How do you feel?”
“A bit tired.”
“When was your last rut.”
“..Two weeks ago.”
Dazai lies through his teeth like it’s nothing, ignoring the dull pounding in his head.
“Any other symptoms?”
“No.”
Yosano sighs before standing.
“Then let’s monitor you here for the day. Tell me if anything changes.”
At that Dazai frowns.
He remembers the problem, and it’s driving him to the verge of panic. He needed to know what those drugs would do, then leave the agency as soon as possible.
“No. I can go home.”
Yosano shook her head, her eyes cold and uncompromising.
“We don’t know what those drugs can do, since you're an alpha, so you’ll be strictly monitored for at least 48 hours. Stay here.”
“...”
There’s no hope arguing when the doctor pulls out that tone.
He sighs defeatedly.
“What do those drugs normally do?” He carefully asks the question, trying to sound as if it was just for the case report.
He dreads the answer as much as he anticipates it.
Yosano sighs.
“We don’t know the full effects yet, but it irregulates omegas’ hormones and makes their emotions spiral.”
She eyes the samples and clipboard with bitterness.
“They could lash out, lose rationality, trigger unexpected heats, dangerous heats, and god knows what else.”
“It’s dangerous, so I will be watching you closely.”
Dazai swallows as he exits the infirmary.
He feels normal now, but..
He can only hope that his resistance to normal drugs and toxins will spare him.
Little did he know, that single day would unleash a tidal wave of revelations that would change everything.
