Another night

Summary:

Another night, another call.

Notes:

Small short that might or might not belong to something bigger.

Work Text:

Danny lay on his bed, absorbed in contemplating the stars adorning the ceiling of his room. It was 1:00 AM, and the prospect of falling asleep seemed to be fading away.

The words from his latest argument with his parents still echoed in his mind. It was a constant repetition: they believed he was wasting his life, that he was a disappointment to them... an endless litany. Although he felt affected, after four years, he had learned not to dwell on it too much.

Hoping to find some relief and escape from emotional pain, Danny closed his eyes. However, the three encounters with ghosts he had experienced that day had left him completely exhausted. Paranoia and discomfort upon returning home were obstacles to his rest. Barely five minutes had passed when the sound of the phone shattered the room's silence. Danny emitted a frustrated grumble, but he still stretched his arm toward the nightstand to answer it.

Upon unlocking the phone, he realized it wasn't his usual one ringing. He didn't know what to expect, as few people usually called him. His friendship with Sam and Tucker had faded since everything started, his parents wouldn't contact him for a while, and Jazz, who was already in college (of course, she wasn't a disappointment to the family), wouldn't call him at that late hour.

Unenthusiastically, Danny got up from the bed and walked to his desk. He opened the top-left drawer and pulled out a disposable phone. Without paying attention to the incoming number, he answered the call, slightly altering his voice to conceal his identity. He knew precisely why someone would use that specific number to reach him.

"Hello? What's your problem?" he asked politely, though he already had a hunch about the reason for the call.

The voice of the interlocutor sounded desperate, and they began to explain their situation urgently.

"I understand, I understand. Stay away from her," Danny replied after listening attentively. There was a brief silence as the other person spoke. "Don't worry, explain it to me when I get there. Where does she live?"

He jotted down the number and assured the woman that he would be there in twenty minutes before ending the call.

That night, he definitely wouldn't be able to sleep. Daniel had a job to do.
