“He is lovely, is he not?”
Saiguu smiled at her, her arm climbing around Miko’s shoulder, her finger pointing at someone in the front. Miko followed the trajectory with her eyes but didn’t say a word.
“He’s been looking over here, I dare say, at you.”
“I don’t care.”
A snort sounded near her ear, then a whisper, trickling down her fur. “Not interested, are we?” Saiguu’s voice tingled with amusement. Miko braced herself for the worst.
“What about her?”
She didn’t need to look where Saiguu’s eyes settled to know who she was staring at. Had she been this obvious? Miko turned her head away, her ears slightly swung.
“What about her?” she repeated, a faint blush creeping on her cheeks. From the corner of her eye, she could see Saiguu biting her bottom lip, trying to suppress a laugh. Miko’s flustering grew more visible. “Stop it already.”
“But your little crush is too cute!”
The older kitsune ran her fingers through the side locks of Miko’s hair, twirling a pink strand between her fingers. She wore a smug smile that Miko was desperate to erase from her face.
“Your eyes will kill me, Yae Miko.”
She allowed her eyelids to slowly close shut, earning a growl from the older woman. Miko let her head sink deeper into her seat. The place was loud, glasses constantly chiming against each other, the incessant murmurings, and distasteful music.
“She’s coming.”
Miko’s eyes opened, scanning the area until she spotted the figure approaching. The dim light was enough to hide her startle.
“Enjoying yourself, Ei?” Saiguu’s voice barely overlapped the background noise, making Ei have to move closer to hear.
“A little, yes.” her voice carried a certain dragging quality, she had one glass in her left hand and an empty one in her right. “Have you seen my sister?”
“Not recently.”
She felt emptiness around her neck as Saiguu retreated her arm, leaving the half part where their bodies touched irremediably cold as she stood up next to Ei. “I’ll go find Makoto. You take care of her in the meantime.”
Ei’s eyes locked with hers. Miko shifted in her seat.
“Okay.”
Ei took Saiguu’s seat. The older kitsune winked at Miko with that smug smile still on her lips as she left.
“I’m fine.” Miko straightened her posture even more. The sake had given her a slight blush on her cheeks, which seemed to intensify under Ei's gaze.
“I know.” Her voice was quiet, almost too quiet. Miko’s ears perked up slightly, involuntarily. Ei followed the movement with her gaze, a small smile formed on her lips. She looked down at her lap for an instant before drawing her eyes back to Miko.
“You could use some earrings.”
The corners of Miko’s lips curled up, her hand reached to stroke the base of her ear. “I could.”
