Work Text:
Years after a Palismen last wandered into her forest, the Bat Queen senses a new life force traveling toward her cave. She wastes no time in locating the life force, and to her surprise, she finds a brown bird Palismen, his beautiful markings indicating great care was taken when carving him, hopping across the forest floor. The bird lets out small, fearful cheeps, and when he gets close enough to see him through the gloom, Bat Queen notices the crack in his head.
Anger flaring through her, she scoops him up with her wing and links minds with him, their eyes glowing as they communicate telepathically. And Bat Queen learns that a young human rode his staff straight into a tree, hitting the Palismen, Owlbert, so hard that his head cracked open. Terrified that the human might hurt him again, Owlbert fled, and that was when he ran into Bat Queen.
Memories of Palismen being hurt and neglected swirling around her mind, Bat Queen tells Owlbert that he will always have a place with her. She will look after him, and if the human finds him, she will give her a piece of her mind.
Owlbert is safe with her.
