Work Text:

I sat alone in the locker room, my face buried in my hands, tears streaming down my cheeks. The weight of my emotions consumed me, and I hadn't noticed the sound of footsteps approaching. Startled, I felt a gentle hand being laid on my shoulder. I looked up, my eyes blurry with tears, and was taken aback to see Pete Alonso, the New York Mets' first baseman, standing before me. The team I proudly played for, the Los Angeles Dodgers, was in town for a series of three games against the Mets.

Pete's voice was soft and concerned as he asked, "Hey, what's wrong?" His genuine compassion touched me, and I struggled to find the words to respond. A mix of vulnerability and embarrassment washed over me. I couldn't bring myself to confess that my tears were a result of the romantic feelings I harbored for one of my teammates. It felt too personal, too vulnerable to share, so I choked back my tears and managed a weak smile.

Trying to regain my composure and save face, I managed to stammer, "Hey, Pete. Oh, it's nothing, really." I sniffled, wiping away the evidence of my tears. I decided to divert the conversation to a safer topic by adding, "I just... I wanted to say, you were amazing at the Home Run Derby in Seattle earlier this month. I really thought you deserved to win. I wish you had."

Pete's expression softened, a mixture of gratitude and understanding crossing his face. He pulled up a chair beside me and sat down, a gesture of solidarity and support. "Thanks, man. I appreciate that," he replied, his voice filled with sincerity. "It was a tough competition, and your support means a lot to me. You know, sometimes we all have our moments of disappointment and heartache. If you ever want to talk about it, I'm here for you."

His genuine response touched me, offering a brief respite from the turmoil within. Although I had deflected the conversation away from my personal struggles, Pete's presence alone provided a sense of solace. We sat there for a moment, two professional athletes finding commonality in the unspoken understanding that comes from shared experiences.

"And not just me," he continued. "We're all here for each other, supporting one another through the ups and downs. I know that being a part of this world comes with its fair share of emotional struggles, and if there's one thing you should know, it's that you're not alone."

With a grateful smile, I nodded at Pete. "Thank you for that, Pete. I really appreciate your support and encouragement."

Returning the smile, Pete offered a reassuring nod. "Remember, we're all part of this incredible community. If you ever need someone to talk to, don't hesitate to reach out. We're here for you."

As he began to walk away, leaving me to grapple with my unspoken feelings, a mix of emotions swirled within me. The weight on my shoulders had not lifted entirely, but the knowledge that I had the support of my fellow athletes provided a small spark of hope.

"Wait!" I called out to him before he was out of earshot. He turned and came back.

His words had struck a chord within me, and I realized that perhaps I didn't have to bear this burden alone. Pete's presence, his kindness, offered a glimmer of solace in the midst of my turmoil. Taking a deep breath, I found the courage to open up, to confide in him about the complexities of my emotions, and the challenges of being on the same team as the person I had fallen for.

As I poured out my feelings, Pete listened attentively, his empathy unwavering. He offered words of wisdom, sharing his own experiences and offering advice on how to navigate the delicate dynamics of a team while also pursuing matters of the heart. I felt a weight being lifted from my shoulders, knowing that I wasn't alone in this struggle.

In the days that followed, Pete became more than just a fellow baseball player; he became a confidant and a good friend. We exchanged phone numbers so we could stay in touch, and spent time together whenever we could, discussing not only the game but also our personal lives. He became a source of guidance, always there to lend an ear or offer words of encouragement.

The series against the Mets turned out to be one of the most memorable moments of my career. With Pete's support and friendship, I found the strength to focus on the game, setting aside the complications of my emotions. We played with determination and camaraderie, ultimately winning the series, and I couldn't have been prouder of our team.

Looking back, that day in the locker room was a turning point for me. Pete Alonso's simple act of kindness had set in motion a chain of events that helped me grow both as an athlete and as a person. And though my romantic feelings remained unspoken, I gained a newfound confidence and a deeper understanding of the complexities of love and friendship.

As I reflect on that chapter of my life, I realize that sometimes unexpected support can come from the most unlikely places. And in Pete Alonso, I found not only a fan of my skills on the field but also a friend who was there for me when I needed it the most.
