Oh god, I'm hideous

Summary:

Jonny Deluca is in for a surprise…

Work Text:

Jonny Deluca of the Los Angeles Dodgers stepped up to the plate at Citi Field, the home of the New York Mets. Tension filled the air as the game hung in the balance. The crowd roared with anticipation, eager to witness the outcome of this pivotal moment.

With a determined gaze, Jonny gripped his wooden bat tightly, ready to face the opposing pitcher. The ball came hurtling toward him with fierce velocity. Jonny swung with all his might, making solid contact.

A loud crack echoed through the stadium as the bat snapped in two. Splinters scattered through the air like confetti, and the bat handle slipped from Jonny's grasp. Startled, he instinctively raised his hands to shield his eyes, fearing that a shard had found its way into one of them.

"My eye! My eye!" Jonny cried out in panic, his voice filled with genuine fear. He could feel the presence of people on either side of him, guiding him away from the field. The sensation of being led to safety heightened his anxiety, amplifying his belief that something terrible had occurred.

Some time passed before Jonny regained consciousness. Slowly, he opened his eyes, expecting the worst. As his vision cleared, a face came into focus, and assuming it was his own reflection in a mirror, he exclaimed, "Oh god! I'm hideous! What happened to my eyes? They're different colors!"

The face wore an aggravated expression in reaction to this outburst, and only then did Jonny realize it wasn't his face at all. He recognized the person as Max Scherzer, a former Dodger and current Mets pitcher. Max's heterochromia iridum, the condition that caused one of his eyes to be blue and the other brown, was a well-known characteristic of his. Confusion swept over Jonny as he tried to piece together what had happened.

Max leaned in closely, his expression softening. "You're fine, Jonny," he explained gently. "The doctor gave you something to sedate you because of how much your distress was escalating. You were really freaking out."

Jonny surveyed his surroundings. "Where are we?"

"The stadium infirmary. I offered to stay with you until you came to. That wasn't a splinter in your eye."

"It wasn't?"

"No. It was just an eyelash."

An eyelash. Good lord.

To say that Jonny was mortified would be an understatement.

Realizing the extent of his histrionic behavior and unintentional insult, Jonny felt compelled to try to salvage the situation. He blurted out, "I'm actually a huge fan of yours, Max!" Hoping to divert attention from his previous outburst, Jonny then asked if Max would be kind enough to sign his baseball glove.

A small smile tugged at the corners of Max's lips. He understood Jonny's attempt to recover from the awkward situation, and nodded yes.

An attendant was sent to the visitors' dugout and returned minutes later with Jonny's glove and a black felt tip marker. Max signed his name across the leather, then gently placed the glove in Jonny's trembling hands.

"Thank you."

"Don't mention it."

As Jonny observed Max's signature, his initial embarrassment began to fade. The unexpected encounter with the legendary pitcher became a unique connection between the two players. A newfound respect and admiration grew within Jonny, recognizing the strength and composure Max displayed on and off the field.

Time passed in the stadium infirmary, with Max staying by Jonny's side until the sedation wore off completely. They chatted about the game, shared stories, even found a few laughs. Neither of them was all that worried about which one of their teams won the game that day, because in the end, what had initially begun as a frightening incident surprisingly turned into an unexpected friendship.
