Tim woke up to the sounds of text messages from all his friends and family. It was his birthday and he got up. Kojo barked at him and wagged his tail. Tim went to the kitchen and saw the card Genny and the kids left. He smiled and saw Kojo’s paw print and smiled. He packs his bag and gets to work. He changes into his uniform and heads to his office. He saw his office was decorated with balloons and streamers. Also, a banner that says Happy Birthday!
“Chen was this your idea” Tim said.
“Yeah, and dinner is Grey’s” Lucy said as she walks by.
Tim sat at his desk starting paperwork before roll call.
“Roll call, and I need you there” Grey said.
Tim got up and grabbed his clipboard and followed Grey to the room.
“Happy birthday” the whole room screamed.
“Thanks guys now Grey has something to say” Tim said.
“Thanks Bradford. Now as you guys may know I am retiring at the end of the month. I needed to find someone to replace me, and what a perfect day to announce that I choose Tim Bradford as my successor. Tim think of this as your birthday present from me” Grey said.
Everyone claps as Tim looked shocked and like he was about to cry. Tim covered his mouth so he wouldn’t cry. Lucy looked at him happy for him. She got a picture and smiled.
“Sir I would love to” Tim said in tears.
“Great Ill plan the promotional ceremony for tonight. The rest of you guys are free to go” Grey said.
Tim walked to his desk to sit down for a second. This was all so surreal to him. Lucy pops her head into the room.
“So, when you take over for Grey does that mean we can’t see each other” Lucy asked.
“Lucy, we keep it professional no matter what. Under my eyes we can still be together. Heck Hollywood has about five couples in the station. What’s wrong with one here. Now we need to get going bad guys don’t arrest themselves” Tim said.
Lucy goes and sets up the shop. Tim looks over to the watch commander office and smiled that will soon be his office. Tim meets Lucy at the shop. Lucy drives as Tim smiles.
“So is this how you thought your birthday would start” Lucy asked.
‘No and I am shocked. I knew Grey was going to retire but I didn’t think he’d choose me” Tim said.
“Tim why wouldn’t you want this” she said.
‘Maybe I wanted to stay in metro or patrol my whole career. Now I feel like I am finally reaching my goals” Tim said.
“And now I want to take the sergeants exam because of you or go to training officer school” Lucy said.
“Lucy Chen training officer I like that” Tim said smiling.
After a few calls and a trip to the hospital they get back to the station. Tim comes into the break room and sees a whole bunch of stuff and reads the card.
“To Bradford this is to let you know how loved and appreciated you are. Even though you don’t want to admit it. Happy Birthday! - Angela”
Tim took a cookie and the card and headed to his office. Tim sees Lucy and tosses her a book.
“If you are dead set on taking the sergeants exam you better read that” Tim said.
“Yes sir” Lucy said.
Angela comes by and sees the gash on Tim’s head and smiled.
“Even on your birthday you can’t seem to stay out of trouble” Angela said smiling.
“Yeah, but like Lucy said they didn’t know” Tim said.
Lucy smiled and left. Tim finished the paperwork that needed to be done and goes and grabs some chips. He has a few meetings to go to outside of the station. He pulls on his polo and heads out. He pulls out his phone and texts Lucy.
Bradford- Lucy Marie Chen I am bored as hell.
Chen- I am bored and lonely without you. Front desk duty isn’t fun.
Bradford- I am so bored I almost fell asleep.
Chen- 🥱💤😴 you right now
Bradford- yeah that pretty much sums up how I feel, and I got an hour left.
Chen- you coming back to the station after
Bradford- No I got somethings I need to do before plus I got to go home and get my dress uniform on
Chen- 😢
Bradford- babe its only 3 hours till the promotional ceremony. Then it’s dinner then I may or may not have a surprise for you.
Chen- Then hurry up.
The meetings were finally over and Tim heading to the ring store to pick up the ring he ordered. He was going to propose to Lucy tonight in front of everyone. He heads home and sees Kojo and Genny and her boys.
“Happy birthday” the three yelled.
“Thanks guys now if you’ll excuse me. I got to change” Tim said
“Why” Genny asked.
Tim quickly changed and showed her. He comes out with a change of clothes.
“I am officially taking over as watch commander after Grey retires” Tim said smiling.
“Congrats uncle Tim” Tyler said hugging him as Tim hugs back.
“You guys want to come” Tim asked.
“Duh” the three said.
Genny looks over at the ring and smiled.
“You’re proposing” Genny said.
“Yeah, now get in the truck or I’m leaving without you” Tim said.
Tyler, Blake, and Genny get in and smile. Tim drives and gets to the station. Lucy sees Tim and runs of to him and kisses him.
“Ready for this” Lucy asked.
“Yeah” Tim said.
Lucy takes his hand. Tim knows the next time he holds that she’ll be his fiancé. After the promotion Tim got changed and sees all the presents and cake.
“Change of plans we ordered from Chick Fill A and called it good since you probably didn’t want to go anywhere” Angela said.
“That is right but first I got some plans of my own” Tim said.
Genny can’t believe what she is witnessing.
“Lucy, I know today is about me. I want you to know how much you mean to me. So, Lucille Chen will you do the honor of marrying me” Tim said getting down on one knee.
Lucy looked shocked and nodded. Tim got up and put the ring on her finger and smiled. Lucy pulls him into a deep kiss. Everyone in the station cheered and clapped. After everyone eats Tim opens his present and smiled.
“Thanks, Wes, for all access to the Rams game” Tim said.
“No problem and when baseball season are upon us will go to the dodger’s game” Wesley said.
Tim opens the rest and smiles. After cake Tim looked at his new office and sighed.
“Watch commander Bradford I like that” Lucy said hugging him from behind.
“Well, I can’t wait for you to be Mrs. Bradford” Tim said looking over his shoulders.
“Happy birthday Tim. You deserve everything you got” Lucy said letting go of him.
“Lucy proposing to you was the best present I could ever ask for” Tim said taking her hands.
Lucy looks into his eyes and kisses him. Tim looked at her knowing that she was the one for him. Forever and always
