Alya loved her best friend dearly, but Marinette’s clumsiness was not a force to be underestimated.
See, this was supposed to be a simple picnic. Her, Mylene, Rose, Juleka, and Marinette. Unfortunately not Alix, seeing as she was who knows where in time. So it was the four of them, and Marinette .
Marinette, who was supposed to just be bringing dessert.
Marinette, who had classically gone overboard and baked three batches of treats for just five people.
Marinette, who had also just tripped, dropped cookies, croissants, and macarons all over the park’s grass, stepped backwards into the shepherd’s pie Mylene had brought, knocked over Rose’s pink lemonade, and fallen onto her butt.
Alya sighed, not surprised, and helped her friend back up to her feet. It wouldn’t be a day with Marinette if there wasn’t at least one catastrophe.
“Sorry, sorry-” Marinette squeaked as she leaned onto Alya and surveyed the mess. Bits of meat, crush, and vegetables were streaked across the red blanket they’d been using. A large pool of liquid continued to soak out across it. Cookies and crumbles were crushed onto the fabric. She winced. “Oh, what a disaster-”
“It’s okay!” Rose reassured her quickly. “It’s- uh-” She looked around, frowning. “Only a um- small one?”
Mylene shook her head fondly and stood to start help cleaning up. “Rose, this is quite a big disaster.”
“It’s okay! I’ll um- run home and get more food!” Marinette promised immediately. “We have a big batch from yesterday that didn’t sell that I could steal and we could go buy more lemonade and um- I guess we can’t remake the pie, sorry about that Mylene, but we could uh- it could be a sweets-based picnic! Alya, what did you bring?”
Alya set down the woven basket she was holding, which was thankfully still intact. She had a feeling it would have been a bad idea to set it down too fast. “Oh you know, just some of my mom’s famous cooking. In five servings. Plenty for all of us. And I picked up some extra croissants from the bakery when I got Marinette out of bed. Oh, and I also brought an extra blanket.” She glanced down and winced. “For the one Marinette just got lemonade and meat all over.”
“Sorry,” Marinette muttered again. Alya punched her friend’s arm lightly and winked, letting her know that it was okay.
Rose squealed excitedly and rushed over. Mylene took her time crossing the now haphazardly stained blanket. But with everyone pitching in, they got the backup picnic set up in record time. (Marinette wasn’t allowed to help) Juleka brought more lemonade with her when she showed up ten minutes late. She laughed and gave Marinette a good teasing when Rose told her the story.
“See?” Alya whispered to Marinette as they sat down and started to dig in. “Always pays to be prepared.”
Marinette tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, blushing. “Yeah, thanks Als.”
“I got your back girl! Clumsiness included.”
