Summary
It was two years, three months and six days after Braega’s death that Donan cracked and wrote to Lorath.
A combination of factors contributed to his decision, the unholy alliance of sleep deprivation and too much to drink being the major contributors. His first draft had been a full confession of the mess that he found himself in, but thankfully some thread of rationality had led him to burn it before he could think about sealing and sending it. The truth was too dangerous to write about, there was no telling who might read the letter if it never reached its intended destination. He couldn’t remember the few lines that had made up his second attempt, he’d stumbled off to bed after finishing it and managed a few hours of sleep before Yorin had woken him, crying about nightmares.
By the time he thought again about the letter he’d sobered up enough to regret writing it in the first place, but when he’d gone to retrieve it and cast it into the fire with its brethren he’d found it was missing. In a rare instance of professionalism his steward had already collected his correspondence from the previous day and dispatched messengers to deliver them.
