The crisp morning air brushed past the blue curtains and directly onto Ed who awoke with a shiver. Lorraine liked to keep the windows open as much as possible during the summer, but seemed to forget how cold the early hours could be. As the slight breeze grazed his body, Ed instantly regretted choosing to sleep shirtless that night. If it hadn't been so hot the past few days, he could've avoided this predicament. Though he couldn't complain too much if his wife was content. Ed always put her needs above his own, much to Lorraine's dismay.
Looking for something to warm him up, Ed saw the multicolored afghan at the foot of their bed. He knew in order to get it he would have to disrupt Lorraine's peaceful slumber, which was the last thing he wanted to do. Their most recent case had taken a toll on her more than usual which worried Ed. He insisted they take a short break and much to his surprise, Lorraine agreed. In the moments they weren't busy, Ed tried to get Lorraine to relax as much as possible. The stress on her mind and body were relieved with herbal tea, cuddling and other various activities.
Glancing down, Lorraine slept soundly with her head on his chest, her arm wrapped around his waist and her leg draped across his. Carefully untangling himself from her, Ed reached for the throw and pulled it over his body. Sighing in content, Ed laid down ready to scoop his wife back into his arms only to find her staring at him with weary eyes. He should've known better to expect her to sleep through his little disruption. His Lorraine has always been a light sleeper.
“You know you could always close the windows,” Lorraine said, already missing the warmth of her husband's body.
“But you like them open, hon,” Ed countered, watching as she settled back into her previous position.
“This is the third time this week you’ve woken up because of how cold it is,” Lorraine frowned.
“It’s only a temporary feeling," he insisted, trying to soothe her worries. "Easily fixed with this cozy blanket my wife made." Ed held up the other end of the afghan, allowing Lorraine to slip underneath it. As she snuggled closer to him, Ed nuzzled his nose in her hair and held her hand in his. "At least the sun was up for a bit."
"What do you mean?" Lorraine peaked her head up to look outside. "It's still dark outside, hon."
Ed made sure she was looking at him so he could steal a kiss. "I was talking about you." Lorraine rolled her eyes and groaned into his chest.
"You think you're so charming."
"I've been told once or twice." She shook her head, feeling her eyes getting heavier with each second she was awake.
“I love you," Lorraine said, her voice barely above a whisper. Ed could feel her breathing even out, grinning at the soft snores she swore she didn’t make.
“I love you too, honey.” Resting his head on top of hers, Ed closed his eyes and let the feeling of her heartbeat lull him back to sleep.
