“LUCY!” Lockwood shouted, pushing Lucy onto the ground, a second too late. Lockwood shielded Lucy from the shrieking visitor, crouching on top of her. Lucy’s vision started to blur and her senses started dimming. She could barely make out anything, hearing everything as if she was under water. Lockwood threw salt bombs at the visitor, the visitor shrieked as it dissipated into thin air. He rushed to call an ambulance and went back to her side.
“Lucy?!” Lockwood called out. Lucy was slipping in and out of consciousness. During the small moments she was conscious, she kept staring at Lockwood’s dark eyes that broke her heart. How she wanted to tell him how much she wished she had more time with him. She felt time slipping away from her. “Lucy! Open your eyes.” he was demanding but behind his demand was the overwhelming panic and fear.
He caressed her cheek, making her flutter her eyes open again. He carried her gently into his arms, supporting her head. “You have to stay awake, okay? Luce, you need to stay awa-.” “I love you, Anthony Lockwood.” Lockwood’s eyes widened at her confession and his heart began to break at the realisation. “I’m not saying it back.” His eyes began to tear up and his voice began to break. “It’s ok.” she said weakly. She raised her hand caressing his cheek, wiping away the tears starting to fall. “I’m s-sorry.”
“No. Lucy, please. Please, I don’t want you to talk like that. Ok? You’re going to be ok.” Lucy’s eyes kept fluttering as she kept fading in and out of consciousness. She was fighting hard to prolong their short time together as much as possible. She desperately wanted more time with him. Lucy nodded. “When you get better, we will go away, just the two of us and then..then, I will tell you how much I love you Lucy Carlyle.” He said stroking her hair. “And I will tell you that you are the love of my life and that I want to spend every waking second with you, ok? So you- you have to stay awake.” “Where shall we go?” she asked weakly. “To the countryside, or we can go to Scotland and see the highlands or wherever you want to go.” Lucy went along with his fantasy, it sounded like a dream which would unfortunately only ever be a dream.
She felt herself slipping away from him. She clutched to his coat tightly, not wanting to let go of him, this moment, their time together. “That sounds wonderful..”, her breaths became shallow and it became harder to breathe. Lockwood, feeling absolute terror started yelling for help. He didn’t want to believe this moment would be their last. It couldn’t be. He cursed at himself for all the times he could have, should have told her how he felt. They could have had so many more moments together.
Lucy’s eyes closed but didn’t open again. He didn’t see her chest rise again. His lungs run out of air. He wanted to scream her name. He shook her gently, but she didn’t stir. He broke into a sob. Wrenching sounds came out of him. He held her close to his chest rocking back and forth, crying into her shoulder and caressing her hair. His world has ended. He felt as if his life was over.
